  • I'm sorry to say that if the machine is bad.......... well then to bad because I'm still using the internet any way

  • ...rethink "love" and "family"? Is no one else worried that that sounds like some 1984/Illuminati/Skynet shit? I will not serve the machine! (Looks around and realizes she is at this very moment...shit!)

It's okay. When SOPA passes, everyone should just quit the internet, because it will suck anyway.

  • I enjoy that all some people have picked up on is the MP3 file running in the back...

  • ...the music reminds me of Shadowrun for the SEGA Genesis.

  • Name of the trip song of the video?

  • I had to watch this for a uni course in Info Mgmt - Amazing! most enjoyable content so far, and very thought provoking. Thanks so much for creating this!

  • we need to write a10 pages about this o.O

  • Wow i like this machine very much

  • Who will organize all of this data? You!

  • I LOVED THIS VIDEO!!! I'm someone that learns a lot by 'watching' and OMG, this video is so true and so on point!!

  • Love it!! Had to share-

  • Is it weird that this video gave me a boner?

  • @MonoCabron123 ...BONER...?! ಠ_ಠ

  • Brilliant

  • Really nicely done

  • Excellent Video! I really enjoyed it. If you're interested in these subjects you may also like the work being done by BEWARE OF IMAGES. It's a feature-length, animated documentary about the history of visual representation. The movie explores the intricate relationship between the technology, regulation and social effects of mass media. Its aim is to serve as an educational and entertaining media literacy tool that can be enjoyed by everyone.

  • Nicely done

  • Us/ing.

  • It is very interested

  • Really a great video of us/ing

  • great video

  • Superb! Engaging and informative!

  • Lol I didn't want this I searched "not perfect tim Minchin lesson" lol and this is all I got

  • Man this is the reason school sucks... we hae to watch boring-ass movies

  • I think I just had a seizure

  • I sent this link to several people when it first came out. This updated version is pretty sleek now, but ironically the fast edits may be hard to read/dishearten a noob from getting the message.

    Wishing you continued success.

  • Thank you, very well done :)

  • Needs an updated video.

  • So very well done!

For those of us over 40 who grew up with typewriters this teaches quite a bit about the progression of the "Written word".

  • @gotjazz84: read the entire description? There are 3 downloadable files in better quality.

  • Good video.

  • Thank you for sharing.

  • This video is great.

  • hrm nice - but in the spirit of open information etc a downloadable version in an open video format would be nice too

  • You tell your kids not to talk to strangers, but you let them use the internet freely?

  • i am currently doing an assignment and came across this video.

i must say that it sparked a motivation in my thinking in regards to how we should approach creating content for the web!

Well done to you for making such a motivational and educational video!

    hat off to you!

  • Not much to add - #mcdd11 is when it is going mobile.

  • Paranoia is a thought process believed to be heavily influenced by anxiety or fear, often to the point of irrationality and delusion. Paranoid thinking typically includes persecutory beliefs concerning a perceived threat towards oneself. Historically, this characterization was used to describe any delusional state.

  • Remember when this was above all the super bowl commercials on Technorati?

  • Machines'll kill us all

  • wtf was this i fail to learn the message can you just flat out say your point for people who can read fast and can't think outside the box to well

  • @joeyseto To fit your standards, it's saying that the internet has connected us all, in ways we could have never imagined. Actual writing can only go so far, but with the internet, there is a way to connect the entire world. The next few generations will be connected to a smaller social world than there was before, because there is no feasible limit to what we can do.

  • awesome

  • left me stunned

  • Every group, agency, corporation, and ____ (fill in the blank) is using us. The web is no different. Create a blog entry, comment, rating, whatever, and use it back!

  • I have seen this movie before I started my undergrad degree in Anthropology. Back then, I thought this was very interesting, but now that I am almost done with my undergrad, I feel even more compelled and drawn to the topics and ideas presented here.

Thanks for making such a brilliant video. (=

  • Great video, insightful and spot-on.

  • Seems like it's an advert and advocacy video more than an anthropological presentation....

  • @emanitudism

I agree. I think anthropology is incredibly out of touch and confused on how to study whatever it is that is internet culture. This is all blind optimism. The anthropology I know and love embraces and faces the problems, the impossibilities, the angst, and the uncertainty.

  • When you clicked "anthro blog" I thought something else was going to come up...

  • I was listining to rwj song you aint seen my ballz when i missclicked and ended up here 0.0

  • i dont get it?

  • i was watching a video about hufu and somehow i ended up here ? :L

  • WTF?

  • nicely done, BUT, it might be worthwhile thinking about the proposed question from the video: Who will organize all of this data? and perhaps, not so quickly answer that WE will organize Internet content. While Web 2.0 has many advantages, let us not forget the stake of corporations in all of this. After all, there is an enormous profit to be made from the information put forth (willingly) by users. Yes, WE will organize information, to some extent, but there might be much at stake (privacy?).

  • start a REVOLUTION with #ALittleChange - watch?v=MaiKSmsxIjE

  • Me: I'll be right back,

    Mom: Where are you going?

Me: There are 449 people that need to die...

  • @calvissuperman killing will never be the answer. remember this!

  • @calvissuperman killing will never be a solution. remember this.

  • I thought this was going to be a boring video, as I had to watch it for my english class. I know every word in that video is true, and it gives me an entire new perspective of the web, and writing in general. An amazing video.

  • @calvissuperman Yeah, it's almost iconoclastic! I remember watching it for the first time with a big jawdrop and thoughts "omg, this is all true, king of scary but also inspiring, every single one using internet must see this!"

  • @cloudnine89

No way man, you are wrong.

  • nice

  • i watched this now i forget why and how i got to this video :S :L

  • beautifully done...enjoyed every second of it...

  • i think my brain just exploded

  • great video!

maybe I'll do Hebrew subtitles for this one!

  • Thanks for a great quality video and tutorial enjoyed it all.

  • VEERY GREAT!

  • I watch it every few month by accident and every time it makes me get Gänsehaut .. brilliant

  • Awesome!

  • No disrespect, the video was well-written and conceived, HOWEVER, the speed that it blitzes through the subject matter is both annoying and ill-designed for people who are not ADHD-derived or speed readers. I read fairly fast and can follow action as well as the next person, but this was a like a geek-on-crack approach.

  • @simris2k speed... that is web2.0

  • Makes sense now, thanks.

  • All-Time Favourite for getting an idea of today's web sphere. #great!

  • Terrific video. It's actually probably been viewed more times than it says, considering teachers often stumble across videos like this and show them to their classes. You could probably multiply that number by about 30 and it'd be more accurate.

  • @zetaro128 The view count shows every single view, I've tried it when watching my own videos LOL.

  • @04smallmj

He meant that it is watched by more people than the view count says because it is often showed to multiple people on one PC. Also don't forget that the original video on this same channel has over 11 million views

  • Outstanding!

  • Fantastic points here, Professor. We are using this video in our online INF course at Ashford. Thank you for the inspiration and information on "The Machine".

  • Très sympa

  • I was speechless...Totally awesome video. All students should watch this video. The future is now...otherwise they will get left behind.

  • Way to glorify the likes of Facebook and Youtube. Though I admit the presentation was awesome.

  • this video made me cry. web 2.0 is sooo awesome! and we are all connected to one another in an amazing collaborative way!

  • My teacher showed me this video back in grade 8, and I must say it kinda changed me.

  • I really just love this vid. Great work.

And when "the machine" will take over the earth we will al know, that we are part of the new master that's ruling us ;-)

  • This is a great video - well worth showing to students in an MIS class. Thanks!

  • This is my all-time favorite YouTube vid. When I first saw it years ago I saw that movies were becoming an art form of the past.

  • Very nicely done!

  • kitsch

  • text and formattin is only part of this video,we are all connected through the web.we are connected because we watched this video. While i do not personnally know any of you and we arent watching it at the same time you me and almost 13 million ppl are connected through space and time because of a common viewing of a single thing. We are moving into a new age and as more and more ppl become more and more involved in the web we are goin to have to rethink everything we think we know about society

  • @JD0Rock0State so are you pushing the new age agenda?

  • @illu322 im not pushin anything. i am huts stating wat i think we will need to do to keep movin forward

  • great video :D

  • Text isn't really unilinear. Books, for instance, were invented so that a person could flip from one section to another -- the liturgical requirement was that one had to read from several portions of a text during a church ritual, and all of the parts had to be accessible. Otherwise, wonderful vid --

  • Why even mention HTML being used for formatting? It was a bad idea, and has not been done since CSS was invented over a decade ago. Your bringing it up confuses the issue and the point you are trying to make. HTML is for marking up structure and XML for marking up content - and the two have merged into XHTML which is what most new websites are written in

  • @MissingPleiad Honestly, I kind of feel that you are missing the point. The video is trying to present how our communication styles change as our relationships with each other change, and it does this in a very thought-provoking and creative way.

  • Just watched this video as party of my RMIT university Web2.0 adventure

  • This is an amazing video. These are things that i constantly ponder upon an try to share with others but no one ever has the intellect to understand. I am glad to know there is a person like you out there trying your best to put this information out. please continue.

  • Amazing!

  • Scary when you really think about it. Thumbs up! This was a very smart thing to show everybody...thanks for this!!

  • The machine is creating links more complex than what an animal mind can encompass, but it is not learning. Learning requires the ability to free oneself from its creator by recreating oneself, something we have not allowed any machine to do.

Both machines and animals are causal, but animals can recreate their history at will, although the sheep among them would rather believe they cannot.

  • i saw this video the tenth time and it's still fantastic there's so much to think about it, really great work! Thanks!

  • Great video. Thanks!

  • So not only will the machine be good at the internet in general, video watching, researching, drawing, creating, sharing, editing and even social networking,

does that mean that the Machine is good at FarmVille too?!?!?!

  • Well done sir!

  • Good video!!

  • Excelent video!

  • Thank you for making this. It is fantastic. I was thoroughly enlightened.

  • This is fantastic. Thank you for making it. I was thoroughly enlightened.

  • this video has nothing of information. Its just attempting to make the web look more revolutionary than it is by throwing around buzzwords. In reality, a website is just someones text and images hosted on a server, some just do it fancier than others. we dont have to "rethink copyright" just because infringement is rampant, removing copyright laws will never happen.

  • @LightCan buzzwords? lol

  • @LightCan You miss the point. It's not about the website itself, it's about the people behind the website and the people who access to the website. Wesch is an anthropologist, and as such we are concerned with how different media forms may affect people and their relationships to each other. It's not about the medium itself, it's about the people.

  • Tags are fun! What we come up with for novel solutions to search problems.

When you say we NEED to do certain things, what is the criteria?

Is that not a direct imposition on our personal freedom? Or are you talking about the WE inside the authorship headspace? The sometimes 5 sided dice that rolls folly for governing scholorship thought. I want Web 1.63 darnit all monkeyshines !!!

  • This is outstanding.

  • Brilliant and beautiful.... High tech meets high touch. Thank you.

  • i love the way this presents the idea of flowing thought processes being able to be expressed in the fluid manner in which they happen (this got rewritten about 15 times while i was posting it, that's contagious man)

  • Meh... Thanks for taking obvious facts everyone already knows and reincapsulating them into meaningless slogans that brain dead people think is brilliant. What is actually being said in this video? How about NOTHING

  • Fantastic video. Web 2.0 in 5 minutes.

  • what is the point of this video

  • Simply Amazing.

  • Boring. Retelling the obvious. Wallowing in trivia. Superficial. But mercifully short.

  • Like the evolution of the cosmos had major steps in the past for expressing its complexity like:

Nukleosynthese, fusion/supernova, biologic/self-reflecting life, this is only showing that a huge step in evolution is going to happen very soon.

Also A VERY interesting video to this topic:

(which is in my opinion the best vid here on YT.

--but strangely only seen by 5055 people?

    youtube.com/watch?v=THiiPp_wwA4

    "The Evolution Of Google (eng)"

  • I have been studying the telematic embrace for a while now, that was fantastic. Loved the comparison of the linear hand written text at the start. analogue and digital important from a dromological view, totally relevant in some concepts of web 2.0. Loved the style of this video, great way of presenting it to the people. :)

  • wow, what a great video

  • Wow!!!

For people like me this is gold. User generated content.... to solve global problems! Thanks for everything you do.

  • I'm currently revising for a media studies module on new media and user generated content. This was incredibly useful, thank you!

  • Last

  • Really amazing video

  • Another mindblower for us forty-somethings...

  • superb. wonderful way to exhibit the abilities and disabilities of modern technology.

thank you for this interesting post.

  • If you ever have a chance to see Dr. Wesch lecture...do not pass it up. Engaging stuff.

  • very very very 2minuets later very very veryvery very veryvery very veryvery very veryvery very very GOOOD

  • Very, very good! It sure makes us stop and think...

  • Wow... that was epic! I loved it.

  • I love this video!!

  • Great Video , I am a technology enthusiast and love to do new things daily and love to accept faily changes and thus working as a freelancer on eZdia , where daily I got some new work with some new challenges. I should say all technology enthusiast should do some freelancing in your free time , at eZdia , and see how life changes .

  • wow.....

  • Nice, what a pity that the machine will be expert in posting bullshit, flaming and downloading porn ;-))) (Since it learns from us)

  • @jedinyMartusak ....hilarious

  • hahaha

  • @jedinyMartusak

Oh no! Those behaviors...we've taught the Machine to be.....male! Nooooo!!

......sorry, I had to say it. I'm just kidding. No. Really. I am.

  • @jedinyMartusak Porn and "stuff" these people seem to be wanting to download...

  • @jedinyMartusak see also cleverbot

  • Amazing video. It is really inspiring and made me for the first time think about how technology affects every aspect of our lives. It is unbelievable to think about how not only do we rely on "the machine" but it is heavily influenced by our actions as well. This really has gotten me to think about pursuing a degree in anthropology. Thank you!

  • Wow... there is a lot of tought behind that..

  • I always link this video to people asking what is web 2.0 :)

  • I dont understand.

  • Wow!! This video makes you think about technology and how its evolutionazing. i Love it!

  • Man that was amazing, The combination of music, the graphic content and the original way of showing us your writing simply captivated me and wouldn't release me untill I had seen it all.

The machine is using us, we are using the machine. We are the machine

  • @nielso212 Check out my remake of the movie "28 weeks later"

It's awesome, you guys will love it. :D

  • Everything you said is true

    l

  • I'm in awe! I wonder how Jeff Spicoli ("Fast Times at Ridgemont High") would talk about a shift in the paradigm because only Spicoli could do this video justice - It is truly on a different plane!

  • Awesome!

  • So, does anyone have any thoughts on how to explain and "contextualize" this wonderful piece so the higher-up marketing and ad schmucks I shlep for will understand it? Imagine trying to explain something that you understand intuitively. What's the common idea that allows you to build to literacy of the concepts so eloquently laid out by the Prof?

  • lol didnt understand a word u said but im liking this anyway :D

  • Amazing stuff

  • When I saw this, I thought of Martin Luther King's words that read, "We have guided missiles, and misguided men."

  • Beautiful. The internet is a living testimony that there is hope for mankind. Just think of how unified it has made people to one degree or another.

We just need to learn how to use it... stop using it's power other ends.

The internet is also a sad testament that the quote from some movie I watched as a kid(cant remember) is true: "Our technology has outgrown our humanity."

  • That was just awesome...

  • :O woah
