@rextacy444 Indeed Iulius Caesar was one of Rome's greatest generals, however he never got to face Hannibal, Cornelius Scipio did, he defeated the greatest general of Carthage who almost destroyed Rome and in turn razed Carthage. To be sincere, Caesar never met his match, no general alive in his time could compare with his mastery of war, so despite the many great challenges he faced we never got to see him square it off against someone of his level.
@Augustus077 I'm not so sure he never faced anyone near his level of competency. What about Pompeius Magnus? He damn near defeated Caesar at Pharsalus--Caesar even writes in Bellum Civile that his camp was broken and Pompey could have easily won if he'd followed up.
@rextacy444 Pompeius was indeed a very able general, but I quite would not put him at the level of Ceasar, otherwise you also got to think of Vercingetorix and his victory at Gergovia... both leaders held against Ceasar but were ultimately defeated. Hannibal went undefeated against all Rome could offer until Scipio defeated him in Africa. I would compare this two men to Caesar, but not Caesar's greatest rivals.
Great overture but I think the march is played a little too quickly, which gives it a slightly trite, even mincing feel -- not what you want for a piece that is supposed to represent the cruel brilliance of Scipio Africanus just after his destruction of Carthage.
beautiful piece.

I understand that Scipio Africanus was the greatest of all Roman generals.
