this has totally made my day. i had a huge crush on cooper when i was a kid in the 60s i sent away to him or his fan club and he sent me an autographed pic that i had for years. i can still why i thought he was a cutie. loved the shows theme as well.
My dad was on that hospital ship they used on the show there is a tv guide with jackie cooper walking off the hospital ship thats the uss haven the very first comissioned hospital ship in the us navy based in san diego. MY dad was a naval corpsman on that ship in wwII and Korea
Great theme. I used to enjoy the show back in the day - the episode that stood out the most was the one with Charles Bronson who says to a villain: '' you hurt the doc and I'll kill you''. Gotta find this on DVD some day!
Why can't TV shows be as good as they were in those days???
I used to watch this show back in the day. I loved Abby Dalton. There was a special chemistry between Mr. Cooper, Ms. Dalton, and Roscoe Carnes. Ultimately, Jackie's character and Abby's character were married on the last episode in the last season.
Migod - Hennessy!!! I had forgotten this show and how much I LOVED it! Sophisticated wit, with a punch, Jackie Cooper rocked, as did the whole cast. Thank you for the nostalgia!!!
I remember that James Komack's character, Dr Harvey Spencer Blair, when confronted with the utter wrongness of some assertion or action of his, would stare at the confronter and say simply, "How 'bout that." His dry delivery delighted all of us, and we began using the expression all the time in similar situations.
I'm also 57, and I only remember one specific situation, which was not comic at all. I remember Abbie Dalton's "Dad" dying. I remember liking the series, but have no real memory of it.
At 57, I could hum the theme of this song from memory. I also loved Jackie Cooper for some obscure reason as a young child (Im male). I was also happy to see him get the part of Perry White in the Chris Reeve Superman films.
@LesHut I've been playing Celtic trad music since around that time and he theme is a nice hat tip to Irish/Scots music. But unfortunately I keep hearing the chorus of the Match Game theme as its 2nd part.
loved the theme and as a kid i had a huge crush on jackie cooper wrote to him and he sent me and autograph pic which i kept until paul mccartney displaced him as my crush. tis was a great show. thanks. and ya kno-i still think jackie was a looker.
"HENNESSEY" was as much a drama as a comedy, and it was on for three seasons (1959-'62)- nobody remembers it today after its syndicated run petered out in the '70s. Fox owns the rights to it (because they own the Four Star TV library), but they're just NOT interested in releasing it on DVD...

Is this the opening music? I seem to remember a wide shot of a car driving to the base and a very beautiful piece of horn music

We need to get this show on DVD. Does anybody know who owns the rights?
All I remember is that from age 6-8, I was in love with Abby Dalton on the show.

@JayPhilosopher In the most loving memory of Jackie Cooper, I second that. I remember this show.
(Don't figure out my age, LOLOLOLOL).

@daypipes Geee, now when I think of Hennessy, I'll also think of Match Game. The tempo and chords are practically the same for each aren't they!!

Most poignant? How's that? She was refreshingly nice to look at, I'll admit that.

I remember it as a kid and it was a perfect cast with a great theme song.
Why it never had lasting power beats me.
Abby Dalton always made you feel like you weren't watching a performance but a documentary of someone's life.
Her addition to the Joey Bishop Show after the first year made it one of the most poignant tv shows ever made.
One of the few shows to capture so well a lost innocence of a better, more honest time.
