@matrags Funny, Vai played directly into an amp with a fender until he was in Frank Zappa's band. You don't get into that band unless you can seriously play. Steve started like every guitarist, one guitar and one amp, and that's what he learned from.

the blues is not easy at all. whoever said its easy has got to be kidding. To properly phrase like a real blues player is an art in itself. check out Albert Collins or Alan Haynes or Doyle Bramhall II...great examples of not only great players but ones who have excellent command of phrasing. That's kind of the separator there. TJMO

I seem to be reading some awful garbage down there about somebody saying they play blues and can play better than Vai......... YEAH RIGHT!!! Blues is actually one of the most simple styles of music to learn, all you really need is the Minor Pentatonic scale and three chords, the I, IV, and V chords. That's it!

Anyone who thinks Vai can't play a style of music obviously doesn't know what the hell they're talking about. He plays in the style of Bulgarian Wedding music for crying out loud!!!

Well, I'm not saying that they're better than Satch or Vai, but blues CAN be tough. Like I said, it's not as complex as Vai and Satch, but there are some complex blues artists out there. The awesome thing about Vai and Satch (and others, sure we'll throw them in too) is that they incorporate all these complex styles, and can play practically all of them, and then go to the next level on ALL of them.
