@matrags Funny, Vai played directly into an amp with a fender until he was in Frank Zappa's band. You don't get into that band unless you can seriously play. Steve started like every guitarist, one guitar and one amp, and that's what he learned from.
he has soooo much drive in his sound. i have a setting on my pod for his tone, and it is pretty noisy, great but noisy. here there isn't quiet as much drive as normal, but still, he's bound to have hum
The way Joe acts reminds me of myself when I jam at a friends house. Trying to find a good tone with someone else's gear, and the friend has his super dialed in tone ready to go. hilarious
lol, is the guy for real? hes practically asking who does the monkey grips on the jems, ibanez or vai. yes, steve does each one personally, he taps them out by hand and sprinkles some illluminati dust over them. what a cockhole!
Jimi Hendrix actually happended to be a really great guitarist he was not the fastest or most technical but he had phrasing, dynamics, note shaping and he could make an out of tune guitar sing.
the blues is not easy at all. whoever said its easy has got to be kidding. To properly phrase like a real blues player is an art in itself. check out Albert Collins or Alan Haynes or Doyle Bramhall II...great examples of not only great players but ones who have excellent command of phrasing. That's kind of the separator there. TJMO
I seem to be reading some awful garbage down there about somebody saying they play blues and can play better than Vai......... YEAH RIGHT!!! Blues is actually one of the most simple styles of music to learn, all you really need is the Minor Pentatonic scale and three chords, the I, IV, and V chords. That's it!
Anyone who thinks Vai can't play a style of music obviously doesn't know what the hell they're talking about. He plays in the style of Bulgarian Wedding music for crying out loud!!!
Well, I'm not saying that they're better than Satch or Vai, but blues CAN be tough. Like I said, it's not as complex as Vai and Satch, but there are some complex blues artists out there. The awesome thing about Vai and Satch (and others, sure we'll throw them in too) is that they incorporate all these complex styles, and can play practically all of them, and then go to the next level on ALL of them.
dude i get some of what ur saying but the blues isnt as easy as u think it is do u think bb king got that phrasing down in a night no dont be an arrogant fool blues and viruosity are both very skillfull i paly both and blues phrasing can be hard i mean u try to come up with a ton of tasteful licks with a 5 notes scale
ive been trying for 8 years, and i still can't put all my soul in to playing blues. I just cant get my feelings in those strings.....maybe another 10 years will help....
I'm sure you could do better! Because you've toured the world, are one of the best guitarists to ever touch the instrument, have been playing for 30 years, have influenced and amazed thousands upon thousands of people, and are a brilliant musician with decades of experience and knowledge.
And yet you have zero guitar videos. Why aren't you showing off your abilities if you can play better than Vai did in this video? I know!! I know!! Because you can't -.-
You truly, 100% believe Vai can't play blues if that's what he wanted to play? You're hilarious :P I don't know if you're an outstanding guitarist or not, doesn't really matter to me...what I do know is that somebody who comes on Youtube and talks negatively about one of the most skilled guitarists ever and says they can play better than them actually can't play better than them. I don't care if you play covers lol...anybody can regurgitate notes with dedication and patience...
"covers" is the key word there. Frank Zappa hired steve for one reason...he can play anything. he said steve can play impossible guitar parts. good enough for me.
Holy shit THANK YOU for uploading this, I've been looking for this ever since that short movie of 10 seconds where they make the most amazing collaboration of sounds.. Fav'd!!
vai uses fernandes sustainers to have infinite sustain, these pick ups use a battery and so do others like EMG, the idea is also to diminish the hum noises.

blues scale is a 6 note scale, not 5
Robertoooo87 2 years ago 2
Not the pentatonic.
Penta=5
and there are lot's of diffrent bluesscales in different modes.
Piratcykel 2 years ago
well I get what you're saying, but adding the tritone(the blues note) adds a 6th note to the 5 note minor pentatonic scale
