I am sure this advert came out in either 1990 or 91 as I was living in the Isle of Man then and it was on in between THE WORD. I was back home by 1993
I loved this when it originally appeared, but was a little disappointed that as an ad it didn't really work, as I went through several other tyre manufacturers before finding it. ;) Still love it though, it ties in with the music wonderfully.
I worked on the digital color design on this and other Tony Kaye directed commercials.
A random comment by Tony inspired me to take up photography and has informed my entire attitude. This was what he said, "In twenty years, anything you take a photograph of will be valuable."
Tony Kaye's projects were always challenging, but I learned a lot. Memorable.
Read a contemporary article in Creative Review about the making of this ad. The strange characters are road spirits whose intention is to sabotage the motorist's journey.
It was filmed in black and white, with colour added in post production.
The ultimate "acid trip" commercial! When I first saw this thing (before the very ending), I actually thought it was going to be a public service ad warning about the dangers of drug abuse!
Brilliant, but one the strangest things I've ever watched anywhere. And I've seen the strange. 10/10, Gold star, top of the class. Once seen never forgotten!!!!!!
if anyones interested in other 80's thematic car adverts, check iout 'audi ad' on here, its the one where the yuppie test drives the audi, thrashes it, is rreally obnoxious and then gives it back to the dealer syaing his not interested...classic audi social marketing piece.
My favourite advertisement ever! I'm sure they didn't ruin a decent piano, it probably had woodworm. I think the kiddie pimp is supposed be the Michelin man? The other imagery might be digs at other tyre companies, not sure.
Not really- this commercial is supposed to sell tires. What better way to give the commercializing dicks the "Fuck you!" by making a video full of "what the fuck?!"
Thanks very much for posting the ad. Always loved it, but I had to google the lyrics to track this down. I agree with all of the words of praise to the ad-makers and to the Velvets. Out of this world.
thanks v much for posting. amazing ad. when i saw this is was like the first time i saw the purple rain video - just seemed like it had dropped in from another planet, and it made me check the velvets out and fall deeply in love with them. still haven't bought a dunlop tyre yet though....
Tony Kaye was so respected in the ad industry that Dunlop apparently gave hime an open budget and said, "do whatever you want for 90 seconds". Fairplay to Dunlop, and respect to Tony!
I remember this being shown in an ad break during Betty Blue. I was recording the film but had it on 'pause'. I was so shocked by seeing this for the first time I didn't record it, just stood there gawping. . . that was the only time I saw the long version on uk tv. . . .thanks for posting. . .
Whilst I appreciate that, the US is only 4.53% of the earths population, and they must understand that 9/11 is just another tragic disaster to most of us and is not such a significant moment in time to us as it is to them.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No, what you 'must understand' is you're a total fucking asshole. And as someone who lives in the UK, you should probably bend over and kiss the American ass as often as possible, as we're the only reason your country even exists anymore.
Beautiful, in a strange way. The music is a trip! The creators of this ad said they thought this piece should be held up in a museum, and I agree, it's a piece of art indeed. Funny how a mean as television advertising, in which art is supposed to be running up after business, can host such an artform,
One of my fav ads, and great soundtrack. The quality is much better than the other version on Ytube, thanks for uploading it. For those who don't get it the ad is for car tyres! The freaky children are ment to represent evil gremlins, devil's or whatever trying to impede the progress of the car.
Thumbs up if Cracked brought you here.
