Ive been a J.Cole fan since the Come Up and I think the album was amazing, but ppl need to remember that this is his FIRST album. Give him some breathing space. Great rappers did not become great because of the first album they dropped. Give him some time
I'm sorry dude I cant take your review seriously. First you dont know who J. Cole is only that he made a beat for kendrick lamar. I think you shouldve listened to his old mixtapes and EPs to get to know who he was. This album was an 8 in my opinion and it could of been better.
hi guys! i love jcole however i feel his 'friday night lights' mixtape should've been the album. his 'sideline sotry' album has too many songs for the ladies. i think he be struggling with concepts and topics because he thought its a mainstream album that should appeal to the ladies. or maybe his label was forcing him to move his album in a certain direction to sell. I think he should just be himself.. Kanye west did it.. J cole could too.. ex. "home for the holidays" is album material yo :)
@spidurrman23 so "rise and shine, breakdown, never told, dollar and dream3, daddys little girl, nothing last forever, lost ones, lights please are for ladies? u dnt know wat ur talking about, im nt trying to bash u
@nickthehater i mean almost half of his songs mention groupies, hoes, girlfriends, etc. etc.... im not saying its bad .. im saying.. friday night lights could've been a better album because the topic is more diverse and more inspirational. There are some songs in sideline story that kind of sound the same.. content wise :)
@BangletheVisionary Nah if songs like Breakdown, Lost Ones, Dollar & Dream 3 Rise and Shine and Sideline Story would've be on a mixtape instead I would been disappointed. I think the album is better than Friday Night Lights. But if you combine the best songs on Cole World with the best songs Friday Night Lights you have an amazing album right there
ok so you were right on the account that songs like Breakdown and Lost Ones were epic and I cud get why you would knock Mr. Nice Watch but if u think about it if all 19 songs on that project were like Break Down and Lost Ones it wouldnt have seen as much success, sad but true cause songs like Cant Get Enough and Mr. Nice Watch are the kinda songs some people wanna hear....my lease fave songs on the album were the ones released, the commercial ones, the ones intended to build buzz
The only tracks which have replay value and aren't COMPLETELY spoiled by horrendous lines are: Lights Please (the song he got signed for), Sideline Story (dope, lyrics and production wise), In the Morning (satisfying lyrically and production wise, but spoiled by Drake), Lost Ones (even though he ruined the instrumental on the album, the leaked version is incredible), Nobody's Perfect (just for the beat and hooks), Rise and Shine (dope), God's Gift (just for the beat and hooks again).
Sorry folks, any true Cole fan would experience disappointment when hearing this album. This was him at his lowest points of lyricism most of the time. Even the most meaningful and conceptual points of the album were filled with cheap and unnecessary punchlines. He becames a duplicate of Kanye with perhaps a sprinkle more of lyrical skill. He really tried too hard to hit that mainstream appeal, when he had the ingredients to be a mainstream artist anyway.
If you didn't hear of J Cole until he produced on Section.80, then you obviously don't know much about rap music. You should stop trying to review music you dont know shit about.
as a Cole fan I really think he held back and didnt want to be like 50 having rookie album be better than every other album he would release later in his career .. I still rock with #coldworld though .... Definitely my favorite artist ...
@TheLilnguyen17 Drake is soft? LMFAO Because he's real and actually shows his emotions? We all can relate to break ups but that's not all Drake talks about. Before you talk shit, know what you're talking about. Take Care was better than Cole World. Sorry
you had good points and bad ones..the grade was harsh(even though your opinion doest really go for much)..bottom line is he put this album to let us know how he where he is coming from as an artist i already know his next album and mixtape is going to the shit..i felt like you didnt know what you was talking about when you put j cole and drake in the same breath....i do agree that mr nicewatch was a leftover track from watch the throne..why you start off all on his nuts then end hattin on him??
honestly speaking. u had some points on this review but overall a "6" is not the score. its a good album specially in this era of crappy pop album. this album is at least an 8. i had to listen to it a few times to warm up to it but its that damn good
honestly speaking. u had some points on this review but overal a "6" is not the score. its a good album specially in this era of crappy pop album. this album is at least an 8. i had to listen to it a few times to warm up to it but its that damn good
Lights Please sums it up because as someone said, he's not rapping about a random girl, he is rapping about hip hop fans. He tries write deep songs like Lost Ones or songs that go hard but aren't really radio type like gods gift, but the fans(the girl) aren't down with "all that deep shit he was previously down for", "is replaced by the freak shit he is currently down for" which is like the radio music like mr. nice watch, and thats why this album has so many conflicting tracks like he said.
Every video ive watched of this guy proves to me that he has no fucking idea what hes talking about it. He bullshits his way through these reviews, leave hip hop reviews to real hip hop heads
This guy is absolutely right. When J. Cole does hype songs he should spit verses like he spit on "Fitted Cap" Ft. Wale, Meek Millz, and Rick Ross. That was hype, but it was J. Cole at the same time. You gotta hear it.
@nickthehater The Warm Up, and Friday Night Lights were fucking fantastic. THEY WERE LYRICAL. Most of Cole World wasn't. And, the parts that were didn't come close to tracks like Before I'm Gone, Grown Simba, and Can I Live.
@Eziokilla9595 ok the sideline story was pretty lyrical too. and its not always about being lyrical, its about hearing the passion and deepness in every word on sideline. in my mind this was the album of the year num 2 kendrick lamar section 8. ps. daddys little girl, rise and shine, and dollar and dream 3 smashes those songs u named
@nickthehater I disagree....Being lyrical is a MAJOR component of rap. I get his passion for music, but some of his lines were awful. Hell, some of the SONGS were awful...
to me personally, j cole tried his best to please everyone. It's expected that not everyone would have the capacity to appreciate tracks like 'lost ones' and 'breakdown' so he made songs like 'coleworld' and ' mr.nice watch' jus for such ppl. thats what made this album special ; something for everybody
btw, i am grateful for anthony's criticism, very very honest stuff
I HATE songs where rappers brag about themselves, but i like when J Cole does it only because he doesn't have a whole album talking about how great he is just about 2/3 songs which is just the right balance. I think this album deserves a 7 light 8.
i usually agree with these reviews, but i would rate this album at least with a strong 7. his lyrical ability is far bigger than most rappers in the mainstream and this album was BETTER than drake's "take care" which received a strong 6 as well... plus, he doesn't really sound like kanye at all, at least imo.
@Heartbreakidyaa honestly, i'm feelin' you but not on that top 3 thing, he ain't even on my top 20, at least, not yet and i've been followin' cole since the very beginin'. nas is my top 5 all time and as a lyricist he is better than j cole 'cause lyricism does not rely exclusively on bar structure but original concept songs such as "rewind" or "i gave you power", when cole writes songs like that he will be a classic lyricist.
@Heartbreakidyaa as far as bar structure goes, cole still doesn't reach my top 20 i guess. az, g rap, rakim, daddy kane, big pun, big l, black thought, crooked i, elzhi, shad k, los, papoose, even kendrick lamar and cory gunz have more complex rhyme schemes than cole, so he's not easily in my top 3, everyone's entitled to their opinion though.
Why does he even bother reviewing albums like this? Black people talking about how much money they have and how much sex they get? Little flares of wit within the lyrics but absolutely no depth whatsoever. If these people are musicians at all they should be working in fun pubs or on cruise ships because that's how creative they are.
you got to listen to more cole tracks he's not trying to be like kanye and strongly disagree with the waka flocka his ghostwriter joke. you gotta give cole credit he's pretty balanced. he shine like more of a rapper to me and i give this album an 8.5.
Listen to The Warm Up. It's his best mixtape by far. He had bars for days back then. Now he keeps it more simple with punchlines and what not and sounds more generic.
@Badballa001 I thought that FNL was better than The Warm Up, because it was album material. The Warm Up was a fantastic mixtape, but FNL could pass for a great album.
@Eziokilla9595 I agree that FNL could have been an album and if he put some of the tracks from it on The Sideline Story it would have been better. But The Warm Up was when he was at his rawest lyrically imo.
I'm sorry but as soon as you said J. Cole shines the most as a producer, I knew you didn't know what you were talking about. Jay-Z did not, by any means, recruit J. Cole to follow a Kanye West route to fame by converting from producer to rapper. Jay-Z recruited J. Cole solely for his rapping skills (although he also has great producing skills), having heard "Lights Please" he instantly wanted to sign him (atleast according to the media).
@SMZZ2107 But he never said that Jay-Z recruited him to be a producer turned rapper. He only stated that J. Cole stands out more as a producer than a rapper to him..
Cole World should be at least an 8 . This album was the shit. He had to put a couple of mainstream songs to put it on radio and tv, but his other songs are the greatest things ever !
@nickthehater im not gonna lie fan of both but the swag and trill sound of liveloveasap overpower coles semi generic sound. Now if he woulda had a kendrick feature thats a different story.
i also listend 2 the album again and in mr nice watch he didnt once use the "kanye west" groan this guy is a complete fool please you should be banned from listening to rap music
You can't compare Section 80 with cole world: the Sideline. J Cole's album was meant for Hip Hop lovers and also for the mainstream world. So on that note J Cole had the perfect balance of mainstream songs and emotional songs.
Section80 didn't really have any label exceptions and thats the reason why that album was SOO AMAZING.
@ShugzVanGonter Get off his dick. It's not perfect, by any stretch. Friday Night Lights was one of the best mixtapes I've ever heard, but Cole World was not nearly as good.
@Eziokilla9595 we both have different opinions, i'll Think what i think and you think what you think, you just made yourself look like a loser looking for debate, lame ass
@dq303 it was just a better album/mixtape. Compare Cole World to Blow Up. Blow Up had a dope as fuck beat and hot-ass lyrics. Cole World was more of an after-thought.
Good review got everything spot on section 80 kills this album friday night lights kills this album and the warm up mr nice watch is the worst j cole song I ever heard hahahaha that beat was defo a throw away from watch the throne review 9th wonders wonder years or phontes charity starts at home please
Breakdown Rise and shine Sideline story Cant get enough Lost ones Lights please Nobodys perfect Gods gift Never told 9 tracks out of 14 wer nice.....(not including the interlude, obviously dosent count as a track) even the tracks i didnt mention wer ok, like dollar and a dream 3. the review was decent but 6/10? nahh, this is easily one of the best, if not the best hiphop album of 2011, 8/10 album for me. j. cole is only guna get better, both at rapping and producing. peace
I haven't heard the J.Cole LP yet, but from how you're explaining the concept on "Lost Ones", Illogic already did a track called "First Trimester" with that concept about 6 years ago. To be fair, I'm gonna check the Cole track out. If you can, give that Illogic a look, it's easily findable on youtube.
Loving the OFF! Shirt. Spent all day skating around and listening to the first four EPS and.. well.. fucking people!.. Fuck people.. I mean fuck people.. The song.. O god... Never change by the way.
Section 80 had no label restrictions. Kendrick Lamar was able to do anything he wanted to. Cole World had restrictions, it had to sell and it needed commercial songs. I garetentee you Kendrick's good kid album next year will be more mainstream-ish with a few substance type songs like section 80.
You guarantee us that, based on what? Kendrick has so far made two "mainstream-ish" songs in his whole career (as Kendrick Lamar), those are "I Do It" and "Michael Jordan", two songs out of around 50 songs. I´m sure there will be one or two "mainstream-ish" songs, but nothing like "In The Morning", or "Can´t Get Enough" (two great songs, btw). And the problem with Cole World isn´t that it has mainstream songs, it´s that it lacks that special something, the songs are good, not great.
@thelithe666 He's not for everyone. He's much more enlightening than Cole. I recommend listening to the songs, "Ronald Reagan Era," and, "HiiiPower." If you like them, buy the album. Right now, Section.80 is my Hip-Hop Album of the Year. I thought that it was going to be Hell: The Sequel, but Lamar is just topped them.
I think some people are being a little too enthusiastic about this album. Some tracks are great, but I expected it to be so much more... It leaves a lot of room for development, if you ask me.

Same score as MBDTF by Kanye? Are you shitting me?
Murph2095 4 months ago
Listen to The Warm Up. It's his best mixtape by far. He had bars for days back then. Now he keeps it more simple with punchlines and what not and sounds more generic.
Badballa001 4 months ago
@Badballa001 I thought that FNL was better than The Warm Up, because it was album material. The Warm Up was a fantastic mixtape, but FNL could pass for a great album.
Eziokilla9595 3 months ago
@Eziokilla9595 I agree that FNL could have been an album and if he put some of the tracks from it on The Sideline Story it would have been better. But The Warm Up was when he was at his rawest lyrically imo.
Badballa001 3 months ago
I'm sorry but as soon as you said J. Cole shines the most as a producer, I knew you didn't know what you were talking about. Jay-Z did not, by any means, recruit J. Cole to follow a Kanye West route to fame by converting from producer to rapper. Jay-Z recruited J. Cole solely for his rapping skills (although he also has great producing skills), having heard "Lights Please" he instantly wanted to sign him (atleast according to the media).
SMZZ2107 4 months ago 22
@SMZZ2107 Be easy, J. Cole is an above AVERAGE Producer but he's no Kanye or Just Blaze, Dr. Dre or none of that. He can just make his own beats
iCre8RBeatz 3 months ago
@SMZZ2107 your right the man who gives watch the throne a 5 is a dumbass
bsorryful 3 months ago
@SMZZ2107 But he never said that Jay-Z recruited him to be a producer turned rapper. He only stated that J. Cole stands out more as a producer than a rapper to him..

Cole World should be at least an 8 . This album was the shit. He had to put a couple of mainstream songs to put it on radio and tv, but his other songs are the greatest things ever !

@nickthehater im not gonna lie fan of both but the swag and trill sound of liveloveasap overpower coles semi generic sound. Now if he woulda had a kendrick feature thats a different story.

@nickthehater Now THAT I agree with. Asap was decent at best. That deserved a 6, but J Cole deserved an 8

@dq303 it was just a better album/mixtape. Compare Cole World to Blow Up. Blow Up had a dope as fuck beat and hot-ass lyrics. Cole World was more of an after-thought.

MUST READ.
PdubzCrew 5 months ago
@PdubzCrew
And the problem with Cole World isn´t that it has mainstream songs, it´s that it lacks that special something, the songs are good, not great.
tibiasuckness 5 months ago
I have mixed emotions for cole world but its only cause I kno jay-z pulling j. Cole to be something he's not

unclemuscleshour 5 months ago
@thelithe666 He's not for everyone. He's much more enlightening than Cole. I recommend listening to the songs, "Ronald Reagan Era," and, "HiiiPower." If you like them, buy the album. Right now, Section.80 is my Hip-Hop Album of the Year. I thought that it was going to be Hell: The Sequel, but Lamar is just topped them.

Mr. Nice Watch is a terrible song lol
I think Kendrick Lamar's debut Section.80 greatly outshines J. Cole's debut

I think some people are being a little too enthusiastic about this album. Some tracks are great, but I expected it to be so much more... It leaves a lot of room for development, if you ask me.
