Ping doesnt do anything but get the latency from you and the server you are pinging.

If you are stuppid switches or computers will log the public IP address generating this traffic. Also not to mention ICMP Overflow, will not work on any modern OS's.

This type of ICMP attack does not work on XP with sp3, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Linux 2.6 or above. Sorry attempt an attack. ICMP overflows do not work anymore. Any modern OS will split those packets up.  :)

The seriousness of the offense differs, though.

Simply put, the bigger the business, the worse for you if you get caught, because they will take you to court and sue you for a LOT. So if its on a friends website, dont worry. If its Twitter, your screwed if you get caught.
