Good lord. My band, the Throbs, opened this show, haven't thought about the Agora in a long, long time, what a great venue. I've been a huge Graham Parker fan ever since.
I've seen Graham live in Rome (with Carlos Alomar at guitar too). One of the top gig never seen in my life. And I have seen a thousand concert in my 47 years of life.
this song made me an instant parker freak when i heard it blast out of radio KGB in san diego that year. graham had some good bands after he broke up w/rumour but they are still the best.
a guilty pleasure....watching this is sort of like eating cheese whiz and enjoying it....a great time capsule from the late seventies, back when it was considered "hip" to sacrifice subtlety in the name of "power."
Brinsley rules. What a kickass band. Bald Bob Andrews on keyboards, singing and hamming it up a bit too much, Andrew Bodnar on bass just enjoying the moment, Stephen Goulding on drums, Martin Belmont guitar, and a great horn section led by Anthony Earle. If you dont have Heat Treatment, Howling Wind, or Squeesin out Sparks, buy them. This band was magic.
Brilliant - wow, what a clip!! Elvis Costello couldn't touch this guy, yet history will remember Costello as the big guy. Wish to God I'd seen this tour - but I was 11. :-(
I was an equally big fan of both and maybe preferred Costello's 5 first CDs but Graham never went Cole Porter on us (well not nearly as Costello) and continues to write some pretty good songs .. the best of 1989-92 Cd is very good. Grahams best CDs might have been with Mercury until he got mercury poisoning.
I enjoy the first half (plus a few tunes) of Elvis Costello's career, but the guy can't play and sing at the same time, and his live performances devolve into a mess unless he has hired extra musicians to back him while he sings. Even then he goes off into hysterics too often for my tastes. I suspect it's to cover missing a note here and there. And yes, there's the Cole Porter thing!
Right I been saying the Cole Porter thing for years. Graham matured and continues to play relevant good soulful rock. I saw Elvis live at the Tower Theater in 1979 and he was fantastic back them.
Living in the sticks in Arkansas, seeing this concert on WTBS was the closest I got to seeing GP tour back in '79. I've got a solo appearance on the A&E channel somewhere on VHS that I'll have to pull out and convert for YouTube.
I got thrown out of a Rumour concert in Vancouver when they toured to support "Squeezing Out Sparks." The opening act was Rachel Sweet, who would've been a one hit wonder if she'd had a hit. I wish I hadn't been such a combative drunk; apparrantly it was a fantastic show.
Graham was always overshadowed by Elvis Costello, but I always preferred Graham. And the Rumour, with Brinsly Scwartz on guitar, was an awesome band. I saw them a few times, and they were always the best show of the night. A great song and performer.
Love how he hurts himself in the breakdown section -he did it , himself.

Yeah he is like Elvis Costello with heart and soul. All the odds were stacked against him and they couldn't break him down.

As a writer, Graham is right up there with Zevon, Lofgren and Springsteen. Can you imagine if they had all gathered and jammed?

Holy crap. This is the same exact performance from my live CD. Now I can get a clear picture of Graham and the Rumour when I pop it in my car stereo.
