Phil I love you man, but you totally missed so much about this movie and there's no way to fit it all in this comment. Besides it's obvious reference to the taboo of sexuality between white women and black men, and just sexuality in general (Christina Ricci is hot on purpose) There is of course a lot of connections to the blues, gender roles. I mean even the chain is a metaphor for so many things...It's a great movie!!
