I remember I had to have this album and I am greatful I bought it back in "83". I still have it on vinyl! Just loved Fonzi's vocals. Hopefully I can put some tracks on the tube. Peace!!
went to a party two months ago at Ashford and Simpsons restaurant and a friend was like " hey this is Fonzi Thorton" I coudln't believe i was shaking hands with a legend and what a nice dude he was..looked great
I love Fonzi Thornton, we was so underappreciated imo. I'm 22 and even I know this, you always hear his vocals on Chic songs (like already stated) I've been looking for "The Leader" all over the place, I need to buy it. Thanks Archie for posting this! :]
Fonzi did an album project before this which was produced by CHIC masters Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards. Unfortunately this project was rejected by the record company. And therefore never released, though the demo tracks still exists. Fonzi was a long time CHIC member, choir leader and collaborator. He also helped other artists and groups to get some of CHIC's vocal glory. Fonzi is still working with CHIC today.
Wow, I'd love to hear this shelved LP! Fonzi has a really soulful, distinctive voice that could always be heard on all of Luther Vandross' recordings! His track from the 'Soup For One'film sountrack 'I Work For a Living' is an absolute gem!
'The Leader' is a great album & it reads like a who's who in soul/r&b at the time! Everyone from that New York scene is on there! Love it!
This sounds like a Mighty M production. You this guys is Luthers best bud. I used to track both of them when they did the Chic stuff. Do youu have his track" Beverley" on RCA? I had it before I went to college but lost it moving around over the years.
I think you are right - I'm sure Kashif had something to do with the production of this track & that is definitely Ira Siegel on guitar who plays on all those early 80s Kashif-related classics. I can the backing vocal Kashif always used to use, BJ Nelson, doing backing vocals! I love her voice!
Oooh, let me see!I really love the Leader (the title track) The punchy groove & those sassy cheerleaders, backing singers & Fonzi's brilliant vocals makes this a great track. Oh yeah & my girl Tawatha is on there too which is always a bonus ;-)
I saw the most gorgeous girl on the train this evening...serious eye contact...
