@kmilohr27 John Petrucci at the last 2-3 years in gigs is trying to play Shawn Lane outside licks but he can't really play fusion chord changes so he puts those licks on terrible moments of the harmony and most of his playing is straight 16th or 32 notes.To play a good solo you need a good rhythmic concept so you can't play straight 16th notes only like an exercise as a solo.Listen to some Allan Holdsworth,Frank Gambale,Shawn Lane and see how a solo is build up.

Very stupid discussion. Petrucci will never be better than Romeo and Romeo will never be than Petrucci. They have completely different style. You can say "I prefer Petrucci" or "I prefer Romeo", but you can't absolutely say that one is better than the other. The same thing is for the bass players, the drummers and the vocals. In fact, I can read that a lot of people prefear Russel Allen. I like a lot his powerful voice, however i prefer LaBrie for a lot of reasons. (Sorry for the English)

Symphony X comprise more melodic stuff because they are a NEO CLASSICAL band, while Dream Theater, on the other hand, are not.

I love both bands but DT are slightly better in my opinion.

For example, if you put JP and Romeo in a neoclassical shred competition, Romeo would destroy JP.

You can't say Romeo is better then his "master" or big influence, like the one person said before, but of course seriously good. ;)

I think Russel's alterations give songs an another perspective, and besides, who stands to sing every night every note just like on the album, who wouldn't be bored to do that every night? Well he's certainly a very skillfull and exact guitarist... Very different from Yngwie in character, even if he is heavily inspired by him and owes much to Yngwie in his stylings and scalewise etc. F. ex. in the song Seven from "Paradise Lost". Would be interesting to see how he would fare on an Yngwie sig. Fender as compared to playing the sleek modern neck of the Caparison. Have you seen the Fender?;Thick, U shaped and scalloped! Its a monster! Yngwie at his peak was miles ahead. Now? A draw.
