  • do you know how to assist them with removing the protein shafts from hard to reach head and neck areas? My GCC has been done molting for about a month now and cannot reach the pin feathers on his head. They seem to bother him but every time I try to help him, he squeels.

  • Yes! This is an old video, Phoebe and Scooter have become a bonded pair and preen each other about 10 hours each day ;) I do both Boo my parrotlet and Token the tiel everyday since they have no mates. I very gently scrape the tip of the pinnie with my fingernail. If it is a good one the sheath disappears, and I move on down the pinnie. If the pinnie remains firm then it isn't ready and I move on to another one. They really appreciate it :)

  • ahh thanks so much! My two boys aren't bonded so I will have to try this. Chester tries to befriend Cheeto but he's more aggressive than he means to be and scares Cheeto too much.

  • When I'm on the computer the parrotlet and the tiel will both insist that I groom them and work on those itchy pinnies. The pinnies that aren't ready will be sensitive so be careful not to work on those. Work slowly and carefully. Only make them feel good or else they won't trust you to do it. Do it right and they will almost turn inside out with pleasure :) Makes for wonderful bonding moments!

  • hey mitchiv, when a bird molt does some of the feathers on it feel stiffy?

  • Yes! New replacement feathers are called pin feathers. They feel like sticks.
