i read some comments below about mouthing the words. actually, for me.. i would not be able to understand any signs if you don't mouth the words. maybe being raised in a hearing family made me that way, but i prefer people to mouth the words as they sign, so i know the specific words they are thinking. there are many words that have the same signs, and also it is a good way to learn more words at the same time.

@ponedxmuch nope. You HAVE TO use facial expressions in ASL. If you don't use them then it's hard to understand. It's like talking to someone speaking in monotone. The facial expressions are like the tones of voices, which says if we are being sarcastic, or whatever. And some signs can mean different things with different facial expressions. ASL is beautiful. And why would Ally mock a Deaf person? like really. She makes these videos FOR Deaf people. Chill.

well, as it is with anything else, the more practice, the better you get.

for ASL it is VERY important to surround yourself with a good, positive Deaf Community. that's how you get to be your best is when you learn from native signers and just get accustomed to natural signing. also, attending Deaf events in your community. signing a lot with friends and others also helps a lot too.

and of course, taking professional classes at a school or interpreting training program :)

i know this is a post from a while back, but being hard of hearing myself my family and my sister (whom's compelatly deaf) find it easier to follow along with new "signers" if they mouth the words, mainly due to the fact that some words are easy to get mixed up in asl and can send the wrong message :)

It's easier for me to read signs if the mouth is moving with anyone, good signer or not, being that colloquialisms can change the meaning of certain signs, or even that some places will make up signs to mean things that are common to them. it's easier to understand people when they mouth the words. Conveys more emotion to me, also... and that I'm SEE, so it's easier for me to read ASL signs when I see the words in order as well as reading them in ASL grammar format.
