@angelinejt When you attach the slip knot, it does not count as a stitch or will it ever be counted. By default, you will always have a loop on your hook. You will skip 2 chains, and then work in the 3rd chain. There are going to be variations so keep that in mind when you study other tutorials. You choose the way that best suits your needs.
hi! i'm making a scarf and using this stitch and wanted to make it ribbed as well. i watched your vid on how to do ribbing w/ hdc, but in that one you only say to loop 1 for the height instead of 2 and i'm a little confused on why that would be. very helpfull vid btw. ^^
With some techniques I provide 2 ways to start. With the ribbing, the chain at the beginning makes it look sloppy so I start with an extended chain and then make a full stitch. It is preference to the individual crocheter. With crochet, there is more than 1 way to achieve the same outcome.
Great Video! It helped me alot! I do have one question though, i am crocheting my boyfriend a blanket and i'm doing with half double crochet. For some reason, it's curling. I think it's because my chain is too tight at the top. What do i do to fix it? Do i have to start over?
When you start your chain, it is not necessary to make a tight chain. You can crochet it loose with the hook you are using with the afghan or you can use a size larger crochet hook to make the chain looser. If you are familiar with the foundation half double crochet, I would recommend using that stitch. It is common for people to crochet a little looser in an afghan, as they progress with each row. If it is real uneven, you should start over.
I remember when I first started crocheting, some of my practice rows looked like circles to. What is happening is that you are probably crocheting really loosely. You would need to work on your tension and hold the yarn a little tighter. This will control your stitches so they are not so loose. Keep practicing and it will come. Believe me, it took me a long time to learn to crochet. Hang in there and you will get it. :)
This is the best video!!! I was so frustrated and couldn't remember how to make a baby hat, I researched many sites and none explained it so that I could understand and then your video was the first one that explained it well. Thank you.
Do you know the one that starts from the bottom up (chaining around the perimeter of the head and going up to the top of the head) instead of starting from the top going down? I used to remember but now I forget and I need some brushing up on my memory.
Would you believe I get lost after Chain 2? This is why my mom couldn't teach me to crochet. She just kind of "did it" and didn't see what I was missing.
The movement where you kind of loop-de-loop while chaining visually blocks the movement and I have noooooo idea how crocheters do that.
How about a slowed-down version for nincompoops? :0) Thanks for your vids.
grandma, can you make me a sweater? lol

@ColetteO7 The half double crochet is a little bit shorter than the double crochet.

do you skip one chain after the hooked chain or two? I mean right after you've chained the 7 and 1 for good measure. It's at about 1:00

@bja803 Skip 2, work in the next stitch.

I don't have a demonstration that start at the brim and goes up. I have never seen one made that way.

your vidoes have taught me to crochet! (no joke!)
I've already done a scarf, hats, and now I'm onto a cushion covers!!
Just learned how to do granny squares from those confusing abbreviations (well, not so confusing now that I've gotten used to it!)
Anywhoo, thank you :)
