the vans in the movie, my mom helped get them together....our van was the one used for the sound of most of the vans driving...plus our van was in it!!!! the red and white van....."clark street speakeasy"!!!!! a littlebit about the movie.....
Did anyone notice the song is mislabeled here, and also catalogued completely wrong in iTunes? - it's labeled Starbuck's "Moonlight Feels Right" but actually downloads as Sammy Johns' "Chevy Van." Weird! GREAT song, though.
i disagree with the statement that in the 70's people were dumb. compared to people today they were freakin geniuses! music is absolute shit from all new artists, people cant function without a cell phone or an ipod, so called reality tv has turned everyone's brain to mush.kids can't talk without using the word "like" 25 times before they finish a sentence. watch the movie idiocracy! that's where we are headed!
I was blessed to have been in my early 20s during this time and to see how people modified their vans. I remember going to the drive-in and watching this and the Pom-Pom girls and Malibu Beach. I'm sorry to hear about the guy who played Duggan had died a few years back. Things were so different back in the 70s, the music,TV shows, the cars.

Vans were popular for two resons back then, for white trash to have bastards, and to pump drugs into their system. The drug part explains the goofy hair, clothes, and cheesy music.
I'm buying a 77 Dodge B200 from the original owner, complete with Shag and the whole 9..it even has the Tear drop port windows!! I cant wait to pop in some Steely Dan and get her on the road!!
The Van, Pom Pom Girls, Malibu Beach- lost in the 70's. Did anyone notice that's ole Charlie that Marcia Brady told " Something Suddenly Came Up? LOL!!!
I got my driver's license right around the time this movie came out. I really wanted a van (still have the magazines) but couldn't afford it. One thing you have to remember is that most of the artwork on the vans in the movie was done with an airbrush. No computer graphics here. There were guys making big money doing the artwork. The music was better back then, except for disco. Gas was cheaper, too. I could get (leaded) regular for 55 cents a gallon.
55 cents a gallon was a lot of money back then...equivalent to $2.50-3.00 in today's money...and vans got about two thirds of the gas mileage that today's big SUVs get..
Most cars back then got much less mileage than they do now. They had just started the CAFE standard in 1975 and the engine management computers were primitive by today's standards. Still, I wouldn't mind being able to by gas at mid-1970's prices, even if for one day.
Terrible movie, but an early appearance by Danny Devito. He runs the car wash where the kid works. Ironically, he had been in the movie Car Wash the year before, but his scenes were cut.
I grew up in the 1970s..I think the "carefree" was more ignorant bliss than fact..1972 brought terrorism in Munich, which came home with SLA Patty Hearst kidnapping..1973 the oil embargo which started a stagflation economy and increased job competition & lowered std of living which continues to this day..1979 the same plus Iran..the only good things then were varied music (John Denver to Led Zeppelin all had #1 hits)and easy sex without fear of AIDS..I guess that's enough for everyone though..
Oh--I forgot Watergate and the only President in our entire history to resign in disgrace..the low self image of this country in the '70s is beyond the comprehension of anyone under 35.. music and sex were an escape for most people in the early and mid'70s and that's probably why the nostalgia...but by 1979 reality could be hidden no more...
Yes, Patty Hearst was in Feb 1974..I was illustrating the wave of terrorism that started in 1972 with Munich and culminated less than two years later with the Hearst incident..I remember Feb 1974 well..gas shortages and long lines..recession and job losses as bad as today plus inflation on top of it..US auto industry in the same trouble as today..lowering quality on consumer goods..and Watergate fallout accelerating to its conclusion a few months later..a very low point for our country...
I had a boyfriend in 1973 that had a van with the red, white and blue theme. I couldn't go anywhere with him. So he parked under our oak tree and I would stand by the door and court.:) I haven't heard this one in a long time.
Does anyone know where to find those small magnetic false side corner windows? I have a '65 Ford van that I'm customizing, and I want to use '70s style accessories. Thanks!!:)
Those vans are some nice rides. Makes we wish I would have been a young man in the 70's(with enough money to buy a custom van). The van craze looked like a fun hobby.
@littlee44 I have few things to say, one is that dodge vans are probably the best vehicles ever, the older vans I can say are the best, the newer ones have their problems but I mean they're rock solid. I have a 1995 but I would love to get a 80's one and maybe a 70's one but I like some of the designs that can be applied to the older styles versus the newer styles, what sucks most is no one has grille guards for dodge vans so I am probably going to have to make my own, sucks but happens I guess.
