No, air pistols shooting .177 cal. lead pellets aren't illegal in Japan, but civilian ownership proved to be extremely difficult. One has to be enrolled in legit olympic shooting clubs in private/military/police schools and the guns are locked up at the range after shooting sessions. AirSoft guns (realistic but innacurate replicas), on the other hand, are legal to own outright in Japan as long as you're over 18 (or 20).
BTW, these guys aren't Japanese. They're Chinese. :) It's these grassroots programs you see here in the video that makes China such formidable competitors on the World Circuit. They're sweeping the Medal Stands in just about every major World Cups and World Championships that were once dominated by Eastern European/Russian competitors.
We need a systematic program like this here in the U.S., but the image of guns conjure up violence and ignorant hatred among the media and general public at large (No Olympic shooting events have ever been aired on American TV!!) whereas in other competing countries people's views on guns are just the opposite. Ironic considering that there's a (supposedly) guarantee right to keep and bear arms written into our constitution. lol
thank the media for their sensation of violence from guns that got us look bad with guns. Their slogan is "if it bleeds, it sells". this is one case where freedom of press hurts us. dammit

Is that true? Are there really no olympic shooting events aired in the US?
I have a feeling these guys are Hong Kong, because of the Traditional Chinese characters they use.

Air pistol is a very enjoyable olympic event shot at a 10mm bullseye over 10 metres distance. There are many clubs in Europe.
