Thanks everyone! Yeah, the updating issue is happening because Minecraft is trying to update too much redstone at once. I have two solutions in mind, one of which is easy to implement and one of which is not. I could either use a different screen or I could put quick-pulsing piston clocks under every screen to force them to keep updating, although that will probably generate a ton of lag.
