I think a lot of people overestimate the wind velocity.
The wind speed is somewhere between the 25 and 30 knots at the moment, you can tell by looking at the water, you don't see wind spray anymore. The condition isn't that frighting, i have been in a situation like that a lot, for example when you change sails. Also I have been a lot of times in the German Bight. It looks terrible but nothing will happen.
That is a nasty vindictive sea running...no-win conditions. Is that a Sparkman Stevens? Looks like a 57' one that I delivered named "Circe", here in California
The boat looks like it is under control: weathercocked for running and not powered up so fast it might pitchpole. Those opining that the boat is flailing about in the seas have failed to observe that the jib isn't poled out.
The boat looks like it is under control: weathercocked for running and not powered up so fast it might pitchpole. Those opining that the boat is flailing about have failed to observe that the jib isn't poled out.
According a german post, the filming was done from aboard a resque helicopter (that couldn't rescue anyone on account of too severe conditions).
The crew was struggling with patching upp a crack and keeping the pumps running so the speculations about how they should have handled the situation (eg how mouch sail and ancor, etc) are most unapropiate.
The boat didn't sink and the crew got to safety 3 houres later.
Looks like some monster wave peaks. Is it just me or would it been better to have some more sails hoisted? They were moving really slow and from my experience, the waves will toss you all around if you are not moving fast enough. That is a pretty big boat too, waves that big would tear my little cruiser apart no matter what I would do.
That don't look like much fun, seems like the boat is outa control, no wonder they make these types of craft self righting, its only a matter of time before its rolls over.
Motor or not, those waves are far more powerful than a little yawl. A motor wouldn't have made a difference, because they're tiny on a sailboat of proper design. The decision to stay on the jib was the right one.
@tomperanteau Yeah, I have, a 14' O'Day Javelin sailing as part of a flotilla between the Port of Galilee, RI to Block Island, using dead reckoning as the only navigation. All three boats made it shortly before a string of thunderstorms struck, forcing us to stay the night rather than leaving in the late afternoon. What a rollercoaster that was, and we stayed on main and jib. No motors available!
did they lose one of the spreaders on their mizzen? it looks like something is dangling around up there. It also looks like either no one is at the helm, or they have their rudder damaged or missing. they should heave to or put a sea anchor out. going broadside to the waves or surfing down them is very dangerous. this boat is built for that kind of weather, but in the wrong hands there is nothing that can save her no matter how well she's built or how brilliantly she's designed.
looks like very little steerage at times, maybe should of trailed some warps to keep her line. But hey, looks like they survived without.... Just a wee bit stupid.. a couple of knock downs and it would of been under a different video title. "Stupid sailors die at sea".
Yeah, time to heave to on that one. Running dead downwind is great way to broach. Wonder who was running the camera as well. I too, hit 19 knots on the wild coast of Africa and then I took the most serious broach of my circumnavigation. Thankful for my full keel on that one......But then the skeleton coast pounded us a few months after that. .
I had to steer my boat (34van de Stadt) in this kind of conditions in South Africa for 5 hours. 30kn of wind, reefed main and jib. My boat reacted the same like this,.. all over the place. She was surfing at 18 kn at top and did not broach! She did later as she slowed down in the through, not reacting to tiller. I ended up with the mast touching the sea.
It was my maiden journey, years back, ..a bloody nightmare and I am still terrified..No fun !
It seems lack of sail area/wind prevents running. Excessive wallowing puts her beam to on several occassions. It would seem lying-a-hull to a series drogue is called for.
Everybody and his brother in law seem to know better how to steer this yacht - just by watching a clip on youtube. I guess they would just shit themselves if they were in a sea like this (rather than in front of their computers posting dumbass comments)
yes, they did. There is another vid on youtube about it. A ship from the DGzRS was watching over them. The boat capsized once, they asked for help afterwards and were escorted back. Nobody was lost.
damn, those were some nasty swells. that boat was having a tough time keeping its heading. im not sure but was it perhaps because it was going too slow to maintain steerage or just one of those times when you cant do much more?
by steering he could mean failing to have high enough speed...sailing too slow in waves like these makes the boat behave like you see in the video...rocking and steering everywhere.
this skipper clearly havent been sailing in high seas like these before
well if it were e i would be running drogues or on a beam reach using my power to run with waves but this option requires great helmsmen capability and one person could not do it for an extended time. really depends n how many crew onboard and how experienced they are as to what tacktics employ
I don't know much about sailing but at this point I'd be motoring into those monsters if I had no wind. Better than playing bobble top on the north seas...
Your better off using sail because the sails help to keep the boat more stable, Using just a motor you'd be rolling all over the place in those conditions

you clearing dont have a clue about sailing, so why make a dumbass comment? the boat would be pound to death going into them waves and would hardly be making any head way and would be very difficult to steer. so dont be a retard and post retarded comments, but your not the only one making spastic comments, as i read.....
What's your problem? From the looks of it they had very little wind to work with. Obviously the didn't have a drogue or sea anchor or they would have used it. Without an engine your only options left is to point the boat into either of two directions; into the wind or off of it.
LMAO are you fucking serious?? very little wind to play with?? that is a fucking force 9 or 10, u idiot. how do you think them waves are caused? and the white water?
how do you know they dont have an engine?
OMG lik im not even gonna explain to a complete retard.
n u v just been readin other peoples comments.
in most cases u would use a drogue or sea anchor goin downwind.
Okay, slow down bud, you'll pop a vein. 1) I don't know that they don't have an engine but it doesn't seem likely from the video. 2) If they had enough wind in that foresail then they'd been surfing those waves instead of spinning like a top. I mean have you SEEN a storm jib? They're like thongs for boats. That foresail is huge. 3) You're a bit neurotic bud. Take a chill pill. I may be wrong 99% of the time but your a jerk 100% of it.
the boat is easily handling the conditions with what is a small jib (not quite a storm jib). It is a heavy displacement yacht which is taking the conditions in her stride. she will almost certainly have an engine, which she is obviously not using in this video, she isn't spinning like a top, and she mght surf but it'll take a bigger swell than that
@arretjeknar Get some education. The soundtrack is "Walkürenritt" from "Die Walküre" opera by Richard Wagner and NOT situated in Switzerland - but not at sea either.
yes, that was also my thoughts. But perhaps there was not enough searoom due to reefs or headlands or maybe a headland needed to be rounded in order to reach calmer seas. Whatever the reason I bet the crew was worried just a bit.
I have never been sea sick in 45 + years of boating, sailing, Yachting, surfing, suba etc. etc. but watching that... got me really close..."NOT FUN!!!" :-(
The full explanation is given by "tomtomsailer". It appears the boat was towed to safety 3 hours later. I was wondering about the stability of the camera, obviously on a big vessel at some distance (telephoto lens), perhaps auto-stabilized.
heave too that saved our arse crossing the gulf from Isla Mujeres To Galveston. the waves were 14 to 18. its hard to call the wave hight in the vid with out standing on the deck. or like you say always have an ample drogue.
One thing is missing there. The skipper should have deployed a "series drogue" from the stern. This would have stabilized the boat on her track and considerably reduced the risk of capsizing. Of course, the drogue's lenght and number of cones should be determined by taking into account the boat displacement.
Why the main sail is down? big waves yes.. but.. not so much wind.. maybe this skipper think it safer without the main sail.. not true.. letting the waves catch you in a motion like this is worse in my humble opinion
Hey there, I agree that there under powered and lacking control as you can see right at the end of the video. Tho the main would steady the ships motion, you have the potential crash jibe and more risk of broaching due to the effect the main has on pulling the stern around. But on a small transomed yawl this is minimal tho, so your probably right. Still, I'd prefer a trisail for steadying her without the risks of using the mains'ls boom and a slightly larger heads'l too.
Glad I'm not the only one thinking about the lack of wind and therefore drive and direction. Guessing its after the storm has blown over, just leaving waves.
Although I prefer to sail, a solution might be to use the iron topsail just to gain a bit of steerage.
This is a "traditional design" boat, which is not meant to surf. It's theoretical max velocity is low, compared to "modern designs". Fast speed (> 8-9 knots) may be dangerous for such a boat in such a sea. The stem may "encroach" the water once the stern is lifted from an incoming wave and put the boat in a very critical situation resulting in a fatal capsize. The sail configuration is right here, but a series drogue was necessary to stabilize the boat vs waves angle (ideally around 20 degrees).
Either heave to and wait for the sea to calm, or add power (sail area) to gain control. Who knows if the skipper did make a change after the video was shot. It is not a fun situation.
I sailed deep water for over twenty years before I first suffered from the curse of seamen everywhere, the dredged sea-sickness. I can tell you that its true that it only has two phases the first is when you think youre going to die and the second is when you wish you could.
i am with you on that man been there done that, be there again. nothing like chumming for fish with your own chum. next faze dreaming you could throw your self over board to stop barfing.
Nice video! It seems like its been a blow and the than wind now has calmed down. This is a critical period when it comes to knock downs, and they a doing a classic mistake of sailing to slow. They need speed for stability. They are now a sitting duck. The wind is probably less than 6-7 beufort and they sailing only with a storm jib.
Anyone know where this came from? I am trying to track down the owner of this footage to see if he/she would be willing to license it for rebroadcast.
Wow. I guess people are saying drogue out because of the snap stop halfway through the swing. Pretty violent whatever it is, drogue would be a good idea in that! The camera boat is too close they could get blown onto him.
now that's what i call intrepid travel , beautiful , traditional yacht , perhaps a sparkmans & stephens , great sailing under testing conditions *****
I can see a drogue line off the starboard aft quarter (at 20 to 23). At 20 it is taught in the water directly astern. As the the boat yaws to the starboard (21-22) and begins to ride up the next wave it goes slack(21) then begins to go taught again(22-23). Really taught at 23-24 as the wave is amidship. At 24 you can see the rudder and the line off starboard and a cone(directly abaft of the rudder) of the drogue. It looks like a Jordan Series Drogue. Set for'sail and drag a drogue.Good sailing.
Never experienced anything as bad as that but would not like to be surfing down those waves, therefore would not like too much sail up. Think drogue and storm sail might give best chance of survival.
Why do they have only one jib lifted up? If they would have had a storm mainsail, those waves wouldn't have felt that bad. That farely big jib (for that kind of weather) only pushes the bow down in to the waves. Always use a reefed mainsail in big waves, it doesen't bounce the boat around
This is my favorite clip on Youtube. The music fits the waves so good. However Anita seems to be in distress. Maybe the helmsman can cope with the waves for the moment but you need more margins than this to be safe at sea. At the end of the video the boat gets the waves from the side and is really in a bad position if a wave breaks over her. She needs more speed, but maybe is trying to avoid getting to close to some coast in front of her.
i guess the north sea does get a bit stormy. it looks like the gulf of finland when we left leningrade - the russian anchored patrol boat off kronstadt bobbed and weaved something fierce. not the best duty - this yawl is nice. don't see much like that on the mississippi river :)
I don´t think so. She´s running the hevavy weather. With this sea and wind the only possibility is sail as she do. If sha had no rudder, she will be continuosly crossing the sea an the waves. Any way, she´s marvelous, and the skipper an artist... Looking this scene you want to go to sail...
Despite the impressive and beautiful, these conditions are not really hard. The waves are large and close one of the other but not cross sea. The wind was not very strong, should be between 25 and 35 knots.
ITS MY NAME LOL

great vid. that boat looks like a toy in a bathtub.
ya19375 2 years ago
The full explanation is given by "tomtomsailer". It appears the boat was towed to safety 3 hours later. I was wondering about the stability of the camera, obviously on a big vessel at some distance (telephoto lens), perhaps auto-stabilized.
awuma 2 years ago
A bit more canvas might have made for a more comfortable ride with more steerage but we were n't there so what does it matter...
I have been in seas like that though (and worse) and I well remember wanting to get off - very very badly indeed.
birxy1965 2 years ago 2
heave too that saved our arse crossing the gulf from Isla Mujeres To Galveston. the waves were 14 to 18. its hard to call the wave hight in the vid with out standing on the deck. or like you say always have an ample drogue.

EfAnthipilarhos 3 years ago
Hey there, I agree that there under powered and lacking control as you can see right at the end of the video. Tho the main would steady the ships motion, you have the potential crash jibe and more risk of broaching due to the effect the main has on pulling the stern around. But on a small transomed yawl this is minimal tho, so your probably right. Still, I'd prefer a trisail for steadying her without the risks of using the mains'ls boom and a slightly larger heads'l too.
Kaptainrdean 3 years ago
Glad I'm not the only one thinking about the lack of wind and therefore drive and direction. Guessing its after the storm has blown over, just leaving waves.
Although I prefer to sail, a solution might be to use the iron topsail just to gain a bit of steerage.
asdfandi 2 years ago 2
This is a "traditional design" boat, which is not meant to surf. It's theoretical max velocity is low, compared to "modern designs". Fast speed (> 8-9 knots) may be dangerous for such a boat in such a sea. The stem may "encroach" the water once the stern is lifted from an incoming wave and put the boat in a very critical situation resulting in a fatal capsize. The sail configuration is right here, but a series drogue was necessary to stabilize the boat vs waves angle (ideally around 20 degrees).
eliade66 3 years ago
Agreed. I think most people commenting here are noit familiar with this "classic" hull. It is a totally different experience from the modern hulls.
This technique was more or less standard for the time this ship was built.
If trimmed right, this is the safest way to handle this kind of weather.
This is how they used to "ride out the storm" in the days...
Not that is was fun... ;)

electrique527 2 years ago
Either heave to and wait for the sea to calm, or add power (sail area) to gain control. Who knows if the skipper did make a change after the video was shot. It is not a fun situation.

I sailed deep water for over twenty years before I first suffered from the curse of seamen everywhere, the dredged sea-sickness. I can tell you that its true that it only has two phases the first is when you think youre going to die and the second is when you wish you could.
seamaster27 3 years ago 2
No, seasickness has three phases.
1. Thinking your going die
2. Hopeing your going to die
3. Realiseing your not going to die (despair)
Theres a motion out there for everyone that will make them sick eventually.

i am with you on that man been there done that, be there again. nothing like chumming for fish with your own chum. next faze dreaming you could throw your self over board to stop barfing.

does everyone eventually get sea sick at one time or another? I never been sea sick but is it a fait acompli of sailors?

I'd rather have 1000hp and stabilizers than r b illy my way along in a following sea like this.
np42247 3 years ago

Wow. I guess people are saying drogue out because of the snap stop halfway through the swing. Pretty violent whatever it is, drogue would be a good idea in that! The camera boat is too close they could get blown onto him.

Always use a reefed mainsail in big waves, it doesen't bounce the boat around
nallepuh6969 3 years ago 3
That might work for the modern hulls, but not for this one. This was the preferred way to ride out a storm.
As mentioned above, the crew were busy making repairs down below and getting the pumps working.

Looks like a search and rescue scene .. S/V possibly lost her rudder and motor?
A full storm jib with engine slow astern would help in a stern sea.
Great post ... this may keep the coasties on the coast.
Or just plain incompetent crew.
cclebla 3 years ago
I don´t think so. She´s running the hevavy weather. With this sea and wind the only possibility is sail as she do. If sha had no rudder, she will be continuosly crossing the sea an the waves. Any way, she´s marvelous, and the skipper an artist... Looking this scene you want to go to sail...

Despite the impressive and beautiful, these conditions are not really hard. The waves are large and close one of the other but not cross sea. The wind was not very strong, should be between 25 and 35 knots.
Video amazing, very beautiful boat!
Does anyone know the name of this music?
