That looks AWESOME. I just got my computer painted from this place called Ironside Computers. They don't have a link yet, but they just hired some artists and if you call customer service they'll paint whatever you want. They painted on a custom emblem that I made from photoshop for me on my desktop. and It definitely looks BEAST.
if you could message my account and tell me how you cut the case shapes on the side i would greatly appreciate it. Or where you got it done if it was a machine shop. Thank you
Most cases are actually made out of steel; what the case is made out of has nothing to do with how cool it stays; that's completley dependent on the case layout, fans, and liquid cooling used; but no, it stays very cool; make sure to check out the final video.
where in walmart did you find the wire mesh??? I needed some one time and couldnt find the right "look", then I ended up finding a nice fine mesh in the office supply isle -- I had to buy some of the black mesh "in" "out" baskets for office use. had a nice fine mesh, ended up looking great., but could have been a bit heavier guage.
It's actualy from a black trash can; I saw the in/out box you where talking about, it was right next to the trash can I got; I think they're made out of the same material; I just picked the trashcan because I believed it had the largest mesh for the smallest price; also it had less bends and welding in the mesh compared to the in out box. It's definatly not heavy duty, but for the small areas I used it for on my case, it worked great; make sure to see the final worklog to see how it turned out .
So, when this was finished did you have any trouble with the optical drive working at that angle? I know that some drives don't like to be placed any way except horizontally.
I had no problem what so ever. You'd be suprised to know, but from my experiance I've never had any problems with disks being angled. An optical disk spins at such a high RPM, that it really acts like a gyro, allowing you to have it mounted at extream angles. The slight 30degree angle I have on my case is no problem for any modern day optical drive.
Standar positioning of Optical drives on cases has them opening outside the footprint of the case, this effectivly increases the amount of space a standard case needs to operate. The way I designed the optical drive on my case is so it opens over the case, decreasing the amount of space the case takes up. The angle the disk drive opens will effectivly allow it to be used in a standard tower position.
I could, but the way I did it with the bondo makes a really smooth looking bay. Making a hinged mount brings up several difficult issues. 1) The hing system itself 2) Locking the bay once it's in close position 3) means of opening the bay spring/electric. There's just alot of problems and I can only do so many things with the rudementry equipment I have :P Check out the final video tho, and see how it turned out.
Whoa! dude I'm blown away at the level of modding you do. 5/5*
I thought about building my first case from scratch. I was thinking of building a double decker for a standard atx on it's side. I was thinking about building an prototype out of cardboard first to see if it would be practical.
Lots of people have made cardbord ATX cases, wether it be a beer box or an old microwave box, there are lots of ways you can do it. I mean as long as you dont plan on getting it wet, then I think it would be pratical ;)
Oh lol. Well if I where you use google sketchup to do the designing with. Google has a place online that you can download thousands of premade modles, including cases, videocards, PSUs, mobos, you name it. You can design your computer as a 3D model, and make sure everything can fit inside it without having to cut anything. Google Sketchup has saved me counltess hour and headakes by finding future problems that can be fixed before you order parts, or start cutting metal. Check it out ;)
Oh, BTW you can pick up perforated stell from Performance PC's, but where I suggest you get it from (as I do) is at McMaster Carr.
They have any type you want from the thickness to the size of hole to the spacing of the holes, or hexagon, or slots, the options go on forever.
I high recommend you to check them out, they are very reasonable, and you will be able to buy your sheet steel, rivets, screws, ect everything you need to build your next Rig.
I'm about to start making my own pc case. I've got a Thermaltake Bach from wich im going to get all those drive bays and all the stuff that are hard to make. I'll be using maybe white anodized aluminum and my drive bays front will be an the side, not on the front of the case.... I hope it will end up looking good.
The case has actually been done for about a 5 weeks, I've just been so busy with skil and everything that it's been hard to find the drive to make a new video. Maybe I'll get one up this weekend, all I can say is the computer turned out to be amazing!!!! :D thanks for showing intrest
My case is all finished and it's amazing!!! I"ll be sure to make a comprehensive update video. I'm going to spend alot of time on editing the video to try and make it as close to professional quaility as a I can. I'm currently in finals week at school, so I havent had time to produce the video, but I'll try to get it up within the next week.. Thanks for the reply ;)
wow i have one of those but i could never hurt it nice case though!!!

shouldn't the optical drive be pointing the other way... it seems to be pointing away from the user...

Very well planed. Awe...
I'd like to see more, from begining to end.
Could you recess the optical drive and have it pop up/ lock down with a hinge at the back.

A cardboard model would be for planning purposes only. Sorry for the confusion. The real one will be a thin metal.

Hey bro, love what you're doing.
5/5Starz
I am somewhat of a modder too, but have not gone to the extreme like you have.
But as a modder I appreciate the craftsmanship, pride and the attention to detail that goes into building a Bueatiful Rig!
you were high recommended by FUzzyBUnnyBOoties and I am so glad he did.
Cheers
LazyMan :-)
