  • light sabers don't have blood, they make a clean cut

  • WOW NICE EFFECTS!!! How do you make the text?

  • slick effects bro

  • awesome!!!!

  • ohhh! I like that! 8D

  • cool but whers the cool movie called fx? song says its jut a illusion in all this confusion

  • you should actually go into filming business, you could get promoted lol

  • lol thanks. after seeing the movie "Avatar", I realize that my FX skills are light years behind.

  • Nah, you do well seeing as AVATAR is a $200+million film as yours are around $1000 lol.

  • actually, my budget for this video was $15, which was what it cost me to buy the lightsaber prop. =)

  • LOL, you see, you do ell with basicly no money spent :D

  • I made this video in 2007 and have been wanting to make another, but haven't decided what types of FX I should include in it. Any suggestions or movie references?

  • I dont know if this is possible, but anway: use the same shot you used in this video. Your, and other people(just 'clone' yourself in the editing) on an alien spaceship, and you start fighting aliens and robots. One alien shoots you, you have a whole in your body, another man(also you) throws a grenade, and theres a whole in the ship and you all get sucked out

  • Could you use green screen?

  • I don't have a green screen and I have done some green screen work in the past and it didn't look as good. (actors didn't look like they were in the environment) Plus, I don't have the proper lighting set up to get a nice even green background, thus making it harder to remove the green. I didn't use green screen for this video and it looks more realistic because the lighting of the actors were accurate and they had real shadows on the walls.

  • OMG. LOVE it. Especially the QL bit. Al just steps in kicks ass and goes back to the future...but wait! He's a hologram! He cant interact! lol

In all seriousness I envy the effort and the quality of this project. Well done, ya made my day.

  • you're right! Al can't interact with anyone as he is a hologram. Whoops. Also, Al smokes cigars and I just used a rolled up piece of white paper.

  • dude what program did you use for this... is it free

    i agree with rofish

  • I used Adobe After Effects. It's not free. I think it costs 1000 dollars. Fortunately for me, my job pays for my software.

  • u r probly the best fx person i have seen on utube 4 ages

  • wow...thats the nicest comment I've received on my video ever.

  • awesome stuff dude! Could you message me how to the credits or frankly ANY of this!?

  • the end credits were made in After Effects using the text tool and a 3D camera. (to fly past the words) all the other effects were made with the same program

  • good, but the blood dissapered of the wall

  • I would have kept the blood on the wall the entire time, but that required me to "rotoscope" my actor frame by frame. It would have taken a lot longer to complete this video. So I decided the blood would be like video game blood where it fades away after a few seconds.

  • that video was amazing!!!!!!

  • Very neat. If you you a star wars fan film though, you might want to make the lightsabers a bit longer.

  • every few months, I get a comment about my lightsaber being too short. The lightsaber I used was a children's lightsaber toy and that was the size of the blade. If I ever do any more lightsaber videos, I'll make sure to have the blade "regulation size"

  • is all with vision lab if so this is very impressive

  • keep up the good work.

  • Thanks. Any suggestions for a 2nd film?

  • Dude, you're awesome!

  • Thanks.

  • That was a fun video! Kind of gave a Monty Python vibe, a little bit. The wind effect and minimalist acting, the shiver and then dusting off, made it look like you were actually in a breeze though there was clearly no wind! Very good stuff, there.

I absolutely recommend seeing the little known visual effects masterpiece cult classic from 1986 The Wizard of Speed and Time, it offers a whole different perspective on the value of special effects in cinema. The trailer is on youtube, somewhere.

  • Wow. I've received a lot of compliments on this video, but you are the first to compliment my ACTING! So thanks for that.

    Glad you liked the video.

  • Very Nice Job!!!

  • Thanks

  • wat program did u use to do the effects

  • Adobe After Effects

  • very impressive, hsve you ever tried to be a pro

  • I'm a professional animator. I am still an FX novice.

  • Great work!!

  • Thanks

  • I love this one! Visual efx forever:-D

  • wow! i love this.... how did you do that?

  • a lot of free time and patience.

  • dude that was amazing

  • XD awesome, loved the exploding head part

  • haha..that was fun to make. (and watch)

  • Dude which software did you use please tell me.

  • Adobe After Effects

  • thanks

  • Awesome.I'm amazed.

  • did you use some blood from videocopilot. just want to know

  • yup. blood splatter and gunshot muzzle flashes were from videocopilot. (hense why I put Andrew Kramer in the Thank You with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas)

  • best ever

  • wat programme is it

  • freakin awesome

  • lightsabers means no blood when they hit.

  • yh, cos they quateristhe wound, so it seals it lol

  • Do you do any effects work for other directors? I need some help for a project.

  • I mainly do motion graphics work. My free time is very limited.

  • Very nice. Deserve a better set though.

  • I didnt have the money to shoot in front of a green screen so I shot in my kitchen. While a nice set would have looked cooler, part of my concept was to have all of these extraordinary things happening in some guys apartment.

  • Whoa... crazy man... I want to do that with my videos...

  • Ah That Was Hilarious Man Keep It Up

    x

  • this is really good stuff... but I should say... those lightsabers are... a little small I believe...

  • Yes, the lightsabers are small. I purchased a cheap lightsaber toy from eBay. The blades were smaller than I thought they would be.

  • That's fairly slick. Surprisingly original too, considering all the cliche elements.

  • HAHA!

  • great video. very...,very nice work.

i´m gonna look it again and again!!!

    keep PornWatching !!!!

  • Awesome video!! Great job :)

  • this is cool, definitely an excellent job, check out my latest video there is only one effect of a gunshot, check it out

  • it's Adobe After Effect 6.5 or 7.0

  • It doesn't matter. The effects I used can be created in both versions. To create the rain and smoke trails, I used a 3rd-party After Effects plugin called Trapcode Particular. Definitely a powerful plugin for anyone interested in FX.

  • how do you get this shit??!!

  • my work purchased it for me.

  • Impressive, most impressive. Jake, what program did you use to make your intro logo with the 3D letters falling and is it easy to use?

    All the best

    Kieran

  • I used the program "Cinema 4D". I've been using it for a year, so "easy" is a relative term. It is just extruded text, which is a very basic task in the program.

  • sweet, im very good at things like this

(because i have no life) so how much does a program like this cost?

  • probably a couple hundred bucks, which is probably cheap among 3D animation programs. Just do a Google search for "Maxon Cinema 4d" and the first result should be the official site.

  • well, id buy it instead of photoshop CS3 thats for sure

  • You can download a 30-day trial of Cinema 4D and see if its worth buying first. I'd say its the easiest way to create professional 3D animations.

  • I loved it! Inspirational, If only I could get that professional! I will use this as a dream

  • Good job! Very crisp, top quality visual effects. :)

  • I have to say I'm impressed

  • Very Cool , you should do some tutorials. Great Job !!

  • how do you make this great stuff man i´ll the same programme can one person help me damn this vid is wtf its......bombastic

  • Oh my god man.. Great stuff.. This is excellent! I really wish I could do shit like that it looks like a hell of a lot of fun. The music is awesome too. where did you learn this from!?

  • My friend created the music. (and did an awesome job at it) I went to school for Computer Graphics, so most of the skills used in this film were learned then. Thanks for the kind words.

  • yeah, nice music and special affects 0.0

  • man this is awesome

  • yea man its realy great

  • yea. realy great keep on with the good job.

  • wow amazing!! 5* Really cool just 1 camara and actor but su great done!

  • I intentionally wanted just one camera shot for the entire scene to make one continuous action sequence. It was definitely harder to shoot than if I had multiple cams/cuts. Glad you liked it.

  • Yeah thats waht I liked on this video so much

  • I've been thinking about making a "sequel". Got any suggestions on what to do?

  • hm tricky because this video is so good and you can't not much increase the action. Maybe bring some Matrix effects in, like one carakter is in slow motion and the other not or both. You know what I mean? Some Bullet time effects could be funny. I cant wait too see your new video! BTW Ive starting a new group 4 After Effects Artists and you really good enougth plz join us.

  • sure, i'll join. mail me a link to it. one thing i wanted to try was actually have two characters have a lightsaber duel. (instead of just staring at each other) Or a fist fight that lasted more than one punch. Also, a more destructable/interactive environment.

  • Yes 4 example, do you mean you twice again or you and another guy?

  • all the characters would be me. I think it would look pretty good having a lightsaber battle with myself. (although it would be VERY tough to plan and choreograph)It would also be cool if there were several versions of me on screen at once, all interacting with each other.

  • wow cool sounds great! and difficult ive made a lighsaberbattel with myself in my video "crazy after effects tests (uncut)" (the last szene) good luck!

  • cool sounds great! and difficult! Ive made a lightsaberfight with myself in my vid "Crazy After Effects Tests (uncut)" (the last szene) good luck!

  • It's really well done with lot of humour, all action movie is shot in the kitchen, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Je suis Fan de ce court métrage !!!! Bravo et encore toutes mes félicitations. May the SFX be with You always...

  • what did you use to do this video its really good you are amazing

  • thanks. The compositing program I used was After Effects. Some of the effects I created from scratch in that program. Other effects were stock footage (i.e blood splatter) that I composited into the shot.

  • Loving it mate!

  • awsome vid man! i just subscribed to your video's! please also comment and rate my vid?

    peace

  • ummm do you have tutorials? I checked out those vector animations. Those were awesome O_o . And did you use plugins? One more thing- What program did you use for the vector animations on your site???

  • No, I do not have any tutorials. The program that I used to create this film as well as my animations is Adobe After Effects. I did use some plugins and stock footage for this film too.

  • good job

  • Great Effort Mr Jake! Cheers!

  • Really excellent work. Impressive scenes. YouTube does make it possible to get away from limited arenas of mass entertainment. Imagine the possibilities. Keep up the action.

  • The shooting part would've looked more realistic if you'd used muzzle flashes as well as gunsmoke, maybe made your finger pull back like the slide of a gun, and used better sound effects. And the camera looks slightly crooked. Aside from those things, it was bloody awesome!

  • I did include muzzle flashes, but with the color grading I did to the footage as well as YouTube's crappy compression, you can't see them. I have a higher-quality version on my site. I thought about the finger pull back thing, but thought since my hand was so small in frame, no one would notice.

  • I notice that when you're punching the clones on the left side of the shot, the third seemlingly walks through the second, and it just doesn't look right (1:10). I suppose this was nessecary to get the timing right. The decapitation part was great, but the mask/garbage matte/whatever it's called you used to make it look like your head was chopped off is visible as your body falls offscreen. It looks like somebody took a giant chunk out of your shoulder.

  • Yes, I'm aware that as the decapitated body falls over, the masked off head cuts into the shoulder. I suppose the only way to prevent this would be to manually try to paint back the body to fill in the hole where the head is (and track it to the body). Any tips you have?

  • That was awesome. I loved the music. There were a few continuity issues with the blood, I don't know if you purposely made it dissapear when you walked in front of it or whether it was just a side effect of using masks. The blood patch on your shirt also dissapears when you punch the first clone. It must have taken forever to get the timing correct for the clones.

  • UncleCorrie, thanks for the great feedback. Ideally, I would have kept the blood splatter on the walls throughout the entire piece, but since I didn't shoot this on a green screen, I had to mask out the blood every time a character walked in front of it. The way I built this, it would have been a nightmare to do this for the entire 2 minutes of footage. So I used character entrances as a WIPE to get rid of blood in slightly less abrupt manner.

  • excellent, awesome, ...

or just, i like it !

  • this is agreat vid thanks for sending it

  • are you going to make a sequel?

  • Hmm, I don't know. I JUST finished making this one. If I can think of anything cool to make, I'll do it. Got any suggestions?

  • i worked on this for a month in my free time. (when I wasn't at my job, eating, or sleeping)

  • how long did it take you to make this? i'm impressed

  • wow you realy got some got fx in here i realy liked it thaks for sending me the mail via youtube

  • no problem. Glad you liked it.

  • Class. You have certainly got some serious SFX skills!

  • SFX? As in Sound-effects? The sound was the least impressive part of it. (not including the awesome score)

  • pretty good man

  • That was totally amazing...My favorite was the quantum leap...

    Loved it!

  • glad you liked it. Quantum Leap rocks.

  • dude thats pretty sik what program did u use? especially cutting off the head and flame effects

  • I used Adobe After Effects. Some of the fire was created with After Effects, some I purchased on stock footage websites.

  • haha cool. Well done.

  • These are GREAT effects!!

  • Show more 3d, try to learn autodesk maya for animating or zbrush(modeling and rendering).

  • I wanted to learn Maya because I love animation, but I chose to learn Cinema 4D instead since its better suited for my job. (I create motion graphics for broadcast)

  • this is way too cool! you should be recognized for this. i was amazed seeing all of those effects in one video.. great job! very well done. you also should make some tutorials.

  • If you After Effects, you should get the plugin Trapcode Particular. It can create rain, snow, fire, sparks, and smoke with a few clicks of a button.

  • That was awesome, very good job!

  • Well Done. Nothing to critisize :o

maybe some advices :) for ur next film or just : You could add some time freezes or set extensions, or clouds while its raining :)

Anyway its really a great video, ur talented keep it up :)

  • Oh yeah...I was going to add clouds and fog during the rain sequence but forgot. I'm not going to attempt making another unless I have access to a green screen.

  • dude! Very nice job! Especially for your first attempt. You should post/produce some more. I have to agree with the 'big hand' coming down a little too fast. Very good 'clone work' also.

  • very well done, all of the effects looked quite good. Only things i noticed off where

1.the man crushes too quickly, dont get to see the hand come down long enough before hes affected.

    2. the blood dissapears after it sprays(though you obviously intended it to happen)

3 lastly, the severed neck's paint shape seems to be off in a couple parts, when he turns and falls.

great piece of work, thanks for telling me about it.

  • Enjoyed. Very well done.

  • Very professional looking! I loved the "Quantum Leap" special effect.

What video editing program do you use?

  • I edited the rough footage together with Final Cut Pro, but almost everything was composited together with Adobe After Effects

  • That was cool. Great job.

Thanks for letting me know about your vids.

  • nice dude...you should make some tutorials

  • what are you interested in learning?

  • OMG, that was hillarious, thank you for the link, I loved it!!!

  • Glad you liked it.

  • Very cool! I'm just picking after effects for a new job I took this year. I look forward to seeing more of your stuff.

  • Got any suggestions? I want to make another one, but am stumped for ideas...

  • very very impressive , all one shot (it appeared) very goo dstuff. all around. i saw the edges of the mask when multiple clones of yourself came in but other than that , spot on mate

  • looks like you had a one of a kind mini light saber :P

  • haha....yes, I know...the saber sword is shorter than "standard' sabers. It's because the saber I was holding was one of those cheap toy sabers they sold when the star war prequels came out. I had to place my digital saber over the real blade . (and it wasn't very long)

  • Do you know a good place to get the composited weather and fire FX like you used cause everything turned out great

  • some of the weather (smoke, rain, snow) were created in After Effects with a 3D particle generator. Some of the fire and explosions came from stock footage I've had for a few years. Not sure where I originally got them, but I'm pretty sure it was "Sony Art Beats". I also purchased some stock fire from istockphoto's site

  • is the blue text at the beginning and credits supposed to be the "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away" star wars text?

  • yeah, it was based off of that

  • woo hoo...1000 views

  • I didn't know how to make the blood anymore realistic. Any ideas? For the decapitation, the lightsaber turned the head into pulp, with some chunks flying out and some hitting the wall. It's hard to see on the youtube version.

  • how about a blood 'puff'..

  • blood puff? whats that? and what could I have used that for?

  • 2 bad things no. 1 the blood effect was awful 2 wen u cut the guys head of where did it go nd wen he fell at 2:15 half of his body is missing othere than the the rest was great :)

  • Good work, nicely done, quite impressive for low budget.

  • Very creative, great job. Inspired me to get back to work! :) Did you Chroma yourself or just the same camera set with masks?

  • I didnt shoot this in front of a green screen because I wanted real highlights/shadows. But it made things 100 times harder because I screwed up my lighting set up so basically had to mask everyone out frame by frame. Took forever, but came out nice.

  • It's a nice piece of work jake.OK Now tell me what are the programs you used to create this.I want to create some 3D text as you did

    Thx

  • I edited everything in Final Cut Pro, added effects with Adobe After Effects, and created the 3D text with Cinema 4D. (although I hear there are tricks of creating 3D text with just after effects)

  • Very cool jake! Nicely done!!!

  • thanks

  • haha yeah, the decapitation was fun....and morbid. I spent a few hours searching for the perfect "splat" sound effect.

  • and the decapitation! lol

  • i love the giant hand

  • I wonder how many people got the "Quantum Leap" reference...

  • "Quantum Leap" reference ... haha i did i did ... probably the best show ever

  • It is one of my fav shows. I've been getting all the old episodes on Netflix.

  • Gracias Senor.

  • At least your apartment is clean...

  • Very cool man - nice effects!
