@Rawego Ringo said once he had to try to see in which part of the song they were by watching their wiggling butts... I bet a lot of people would have done that too but not because they didn't know anymore in which part of the song they were. *cough*
Other reasons they quit was because they went on performing everyday going from one city and one country non stop. It was exhausting and they didn't take long breaks. They should have taken at least a year off. And of course '66 was a bad year for touring after the Phillippines debacle and then the threats and bonfires in the states after the so called comments from John.
@cometandcupids Notice that this video is from the Shea Stadium concert of 1965. (i.e., not 1966) I have never before heard this version, due to the STUDIO version being edited in in its place in the TV program about that 1965 concert. I do NOT appreciate that editing-in, because I wanted to make my own decision about the original!
As for the end of touring: I have read elsewhere that the decision was made during their Asia tour (which included the problematic visit to Philippines) ...
@gbaby627 Paul played lead on Taxman and Back in the USSR and of course all of his acoustic stuff. John played very little lead except his acoustic stuff. He did play most of lead on "Revolution" and "Get Back" and part of the end of the Abbey Road album and probably more like "Yer Blues", etc. But George was the lead guitar player. IMO Paul was much better at the guitar than John was especially the acoustic stuff. Paul was really great on acoustic, like "Blackbird", "Mother Nature's Son"etc
@cooltooth112 The Beatles broke up over 42 years ago, a false assumption as to who played lead (especially on a band not know for their lead guitar riffs) is hardly an indication that I am "really young". I can only assume that by your criteria, that you are well into or past your 60's and it would be a truer statement to say that you must be really old.
@bluegsp A bit sensitive over an innocent assumption and yes I am 55 years old and I was Beatle freak like everyone else in that time period. You may have missed the fanatical stage of the Beatles. So we grew up in different musical periods, but I believe everyone will tell you that the Beatles were known for their lead riffs in every song, like Day Tripper, Paperback Writer, the list goes on . Those of us that played guitar tried to learn them all. Don't be so thin-skinned, it's no big deal.
@cooltooth112 I am not "thin-skinned", You were patronizing and insulting so I corrected your false assumption. When I think of bands known for their guitar riffs of that period, I think of Cream, Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd and The Doors, not the Beatles. The 2 songs that you gave as examples provide more of a melody line rather than impressive guitar licks. Don't get me wrong, The Beatles were a great band and deserve every accolade, but hot lead guitar is not one of them.
@bluegsp led zep & Jimmy Page are the kings of the rock guitar riff.. i can't think of any rock band that has more cool rock "classic riffs then Zep.. Day tripper was a great beatle riff i must add..and i feel fine..
@dougalmac54 I don't need to hear someone else's opinion to form my own. The guitar licks on most Beatle songs were mediocre melodies. (Luther Perkins of Johnny Cash's Tennessee Two had more distinctive and iconic guitar licks) His most memorable licks are probable Day Tripper or Birthday, I mean John's lead on Get Back was as good or better than anything I can remember George doing.
they were sooooo tired. By the 4th of 5th song (Ticket to Ride or Act Naturally) they were dieing. By Baby's in Black, they were gonna drop. Such cool guys. To work so hard. THE BEATLES WILL NEVER DIE!!!!!!
Oh, and they didn't overdub the stuff because they did bad, it was because you couldn't here them through the noise of the fans. Just saying. Good video though.
This is one of the reasons The Beatles stopped touring; the technology that was available for live performance was way behind the needs of a venue of this size. And they couldn't even hear themselves over the screaming girls; they were artists, and they weren't doing it for the women, but the music, and it was painfully obvious that a large amount of the people there were there were merely there to see, not listen. A real pity the proper technology wasn't available back then :(
@Anonymoose123456789 I think the main reason the Beatles stopped touring was the influence of the Beach Boys. (pet sounds 1965) The Beatles realized it was ok to create music that wasn't suitable (or practicle) for live perfomance.
Hey revenge guy....That was the first rock concert in such a venue, never done before. They were limited to there own equipment, what you see on stage is what they had, plus the stadium PA which was great for introducing ball players but not so hot for music, It would be much different with todays technology. In 1965 you had to be good, no pitch correction computers like today.
I have read tonys of Beatle litature, written by real jounalist and some who had an axe to grind one way or another, but I don't recall seeing any info about any sessions for overdubbing concert footage. I would say though that stage monitors were poor then and in-ear technolgy was decades away. It is well documented that they could not hear themselves for all the screaming, so a few mistakes are to be expected and excused. Ringo was a great drummer his vocal skills were not those of the rest
Can't decide if this is bullshit or not. in the documentary there's no footage of him playing act naturally, but it's pretty disinheartening anyways, the beatles are nazis
As much as anyone criticizes his "singing ability" - Ringo is rarely out of tune (and we never walk out...). I would say here, he's more out of breath than not singing well. Besides - give me the real audio!! I think it's great. PS - check out the kick drum and Paul's bass - locked in. This is one of the most underrated rhythm sections ever!
@AppleCorp3 - Agreed. I'd like to see a group of 25 year olds lock this tight and play this well today... with NO MONITORS. This is a solid band. Ringo is a CHAMP. Great back beat... and yeah... out of breath but still more in tune than Ashley Simpson... lol
("who?") - That was a great raw performance by a good band in a hairy situation. I love this.
I have never seen a person sing and drum at the same time. That would make Ringo a rarity.I am a big Keith Moon fan,but I don't ever remember him doing anything on that scale
Okay... I've watched this a few times, and I don't really buy it. I cannot hear Paul's harmony vocal at all. That should certainly still be here in this "restored" version, which really isn't bad at all. Paul has talked about how fast they played the songs at Shea out of sheer adrenaline. And they've all talked about about the poor sound quality off Shea's baseball p.a. system, buried under the wall of constant screaming.
When I first heard this song I said "That's definitely Ringo" and all the lads were like "No, it's not and that's final. He can't sing." so I did kind of doubt it. And now I find out that it WAS actually him. Well, they just got owned in the faces.
And Ringo is by far me favourite Beatle and I'm so happy he's still alive, just like Paul. Long live Ringo and Paul, R.I.P. George and John =(
I also love Ringo's solo songs from his solo career. My favs are Photograph, It Don't Come Easy, Never Without You, Only You, Goodnight Vienna, Walk With You, and Peace Dream.
My favs are Octopus's Garden, Yellow Submarine, Liverpool 8, Never Without You, It Don't Come Easy, Act Naturally and You Are Sixteen. Basically, all of his solos are amazing. He's got a great style, doesn't he?
Great to see, but we have to admit that it is hard to give this ***** for ringos voice. however, as some have said, playing live concerts was a much different affair in the past, and bands were unable to hear what they were playing, especially out of doors.
Home to the Beatles' big, historic outdoor concert, and home to the Miracle Mets.
All in the same decade... makes me proud to be a Mets fan, and wish I'd been there to see those great events (my theatre director was- loved the Beatles, and got the day off when the Amazin' Mets won in '69!)
The sound coming off the stage here wasn't even loud enough for people sitting in the first row of the stadium to hear if the whole stadium was empty! They fed the audio from their microphones through the shitty stadium PA system. The audio going into the soundboard for the original recording was more raw than you can imagine: no mixing, no equalization, no compression: you might as well get your old cassette boom box with that little mic recorder to record it, because that's about what it was.
The guys up on stage have monitors on the stage or in their headsets to hear themselves and all the other voices and instruments.... THIS IS A MODERN ROCK CONCERT......... THE BEATLES HAD NONE OF THAT!!!! At Shea, they had only their 100 watt Vox AC-100 amplifiers to hear the guitars, no monitors to hear themselves, and Ringo couldn't hear shit because he was sitting behind the band and had NOTHING.
These speakers are powered by upwards of 10,000 watts or more of massive power amplifiers with huge, beefy 460 volt power supplies, high voltage MOSFET transistors or vaccum tubes and 4 gauge solid copper cables for the signal from the amp to the speakers. These amps are in turn fed by the stage amps for the guitars and all the other instruments, which are each 100 watts each. Everything off the stage is fed into at least 2 mixing consoles for proper bass, mid, and treble ballance......
Since I am interested in the history of recording and electronic technology, understand electronics, and a huge Beatles fan, I'll try to make this simple for every one. Everyone my age (32) and younger grew up in the age of the "megga" rock concert..... when you go to the arena or stadium to see your favorite band, and there are upwards of 200 massive speakers hanging above the stage pointed right at you......
People must remember that this was recorded live in the 60's when the Beatles could hardly even hear themselves. The recording equipment and all the sound sucked. Can you imagine what they could have done today?
Sounds great-thanks. People are always recording concerts with their camera phones and putting them on here. They usually sound like crap. 1965 technology was a joke. You made me realize how good the beatles were. Thanks again.

YES Ringo must have been exhausted after that performance at Shea Stadium and look at all of those Beatles fans. This is one of my favourite Beatles song!!! Peace & Love!
they couldn't hear shit, thats half the reason they stopped playing live, imagine how gutted they are that these recordings are out there, give 'em a break people, they created more special musical moments in 10 years than we could in a lifetime and deserve their place in history
it's like hearing a transistor radio at the airport with jets landing and taking off. how on earth did they hear enough to be in tune/time and perform?!!!!!
dude, i'd like to see you play the drums like that, and besides its not his singing thats messed up, it was back in the '60s they dont have that great of a pa system
Yes, Voni is actually my mother. She passed away August 18, 2008, after a long battle with cancer. Watch for the posting that thanks all the loyal Act Naturally fans. Thank you for responding. Sincerely, Jaelene Morrison-Morris (BabiesRT)
The performance is GREAT. I suppose the overdubbed tracks were made coz the balance is so bad. But everyone appears to on & in tune. Unlike the Sullivan performance of this song.
Act Naturally co-writer Voni Morrison is seriously ill. The Martin D-18 guitar she used to help compose Act Naturally is on ebay with seller arildcn until Sunday March 2, 2008 at 7 pm pst. Please watch the auction, tell a friend and say a prayer. Thank you
for a performance on a stadium in '65, considering that the video is a bit exagerating (come on, I've never heard this sheaky kind of sound even on the wild-raw-Hamburg-and-other-early-Gigs recordings) I think the performance is OK. Don't worry mate, they were barely hearing themselves around there, so it's nothing suprinsing.
It's true that their equipment setup here is hardly suitable for a venue as big as Shea...but interestingly enough, the next concert they did after this was at Atlanta Stadium, and that show has fallen into legend because the promoters actually supplied an especially powerful PA/speaker system. Both the Beatles and the screaming audience could hear all the music and vocals loud and clear. But, sadly, that was a one-shot happening.
You can't hear George's guitar. What's up with that? I hear some guitar from John I think but except for a bit at the beginning the part from George is either too low or missing all together.
I have the Raw CD it sounds far better than this computer twang. The band were really good considering the technology (they accepted) in 1965 for most of the concert they were in tune and it was a good performance. If they had of insisted on a better P.A. setup the crowd would have enjoyed the concert even more.
Thanks for this! I've always wondered why there's never been an expanded CD release of BEATLES AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL, and this footage provides a good reason. Still worth watching.
Did theyre is a dvd for this one ?

YES Ringo must have been exhausted after that performance at Shea Stadium and look at all of those Beatles fans. This is one of my favourite Beatles song!!! Peace & Love!
TinaM1177 3 years ago
Clearly it was the setup and not his actual singing performance.

they couldn't hear shit, thats half the reason they stopped playing live, imagine how gutted they are that these recordings are out there, give 'em a break people, they created more special musical moments in 10 years than we could in a lifetime and deserve their place in history

it's like hearing a transistor radio at the airport with jets landing and taking off. how on earth did they hear enough to be in tune/time and perform?!!!!!

Unlike the Sullivan performance of this song.

for a performance on a stadium in '65, considering that the video is a bit exagerating (come on, I've never heard this sheaky kind of sound even on the wild-raw-Hamburg-and-other-early-Gigs recordings) I think the performance is OK. Don't worry mate, they were barely hearing themselves around there, so it's nothing suprinsing.

Does anybody realize the antiquated equiptment that they were using??? They couldn't even hear themselves.....Let alone, get a good recording.......
publicanimal1 4 years ago 2
It's true that their equipment setup here is hardly suitable for a venue as big as Shea...but interestingly enough, the next concert they did after this was at Atlanta Stadium, and that show has fallen into legend because the promoters actually supplied an especially powerful PA/speaker system. Both the Beatles and the screaming audience could hear all the music and vocals loud and clear. But, sadly, that was a one-shot happening.

RIP Buck Owens!

it's not as though they were telling him he did it poorly. John and Paul were helping out.

This is a bad example of the 'raw' sound!
How come there's loas of 'chorus' on it? Check out 'Dizzy Miss Lizzy - Raw', that sounds miles better!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Ringo should thank his lucky stars for Lennon and McCartney.

You can't hear George's guitar. What's up with that? I hear some guitar from John I think but except for a bit at the beginning the part from George is either too low or missing all together.
ghramsey 4 years ago
George ran up into the stands for a hot dog and Coke during this number.

Ringo's vocal performance isn't so bad. You can't hear Paul whatsoever.

I have the Raw CD it sounds far better than this computer twang. The band were really good considering the technology (they accepted) in 1965 for most of the concert they were in tune and it was a good performance. If they had of insisted on a better P.A. setup the crowd would have enjoyed the concert even more.

Love Ringo! My favorite Beatle! Thanks for this!

Thanks for this! I've always wondered why there's never been an expanded CD release of BEATLES AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL, and this footage provides a good reason. Still worth watching.
