A good cover. Ya gotta respect anyone who honors an original with a cover unless its completely destroyed, which it is not here. I love Drake's stuff. What a freakin loss he was. If he could have only held on just a little longer until his work got the respect it always deserved. Very Van Gogh like in that respect. Check out the cover of this song by plectrum34 on this site. Mindblowing.
Nick Drake danced effortlessly within the listener's mind..melding voice with guitar. He created it and completed it.That's why it's too deep to cover and then expect it to be beyond criticism
Very interesting version. The chords behind the part "take a look you may see me..." weren't what I was hoping for, but everything came together nicely.
This is a good cover of a truly fantastic song! Of course, I do think that the original is better by far, and I guess this could never compare. But if I had heard this before hearing the original, it would still be a good song. It's just, the original is better. 99% of the time, originals ARE better than cover versions. It doesn't mean the cover versions are bad, it just means they're different. An artist's interpretation of another's work.
I'm a huge Nick Drake fan and I've never really listened to Beck, but I have to say this cover is absolutely brilliant. He's turned the starkness of the original into something much more psychedelic. Beck, I take my hat off to you!!
I'm not really sure how any fan of Nick Drake could come here and say that this cover sucks, or it "wasn't good enough." Come on, you don't have to be a fan of Beck to realize that this cover was a labor of love! It's obvious in every sense of the word that in covering Parasite (a very underrated song to begin with), Beck was doing his damnedest here to honor the painfully short life and work of Nick Drake! As someone who likes maybe 8 of Beck's originals, total, doesn't matter. This was good.
while it may not differ from the original that much, his covers of Nick Drake sound so natural that if I didn't know any better I would think they were his own songs. Nick Drake is amazing. Beck is amazing. Plain and simple. And for those who complain about Beck's version not sounding different enough, would you originally want him to do it much different?
I think this is a really strong cover! I don't prefer it to the original, but i don't really think it's worse, either. It has a different voicing, and a different feel to it, overall. Much better than his Pink Moon cover, which i'm not really a fan of. Love Beck and Nick Drake though
I think Drake would have liked this version, Beck does it tremendous justice and is very comparable to Drake as an artist, he maintains the songs understated quality!
I love Beck but having just listened to the Nick Drake version for the first time in a while I have to say this doesn't compare, the original is amazing
I take back what I said. Maybe I was too hypnotized by Nick Drake's music before. Maybe I was just having a bad day. Whatever it was, I take back what I said. Beck has incredible talent. There's just something about Nick Drake that changes you. Kind of like Radiohead does, but in a completely different way.
It's not the same! Doesn't anyone get it?! The music we listen to today isn't music. Nick Drake's work makes you look at things with a different perspective! This doesn't! It just doesn't!! frustration, anxiety, depression, confusion, shut up, society! just shut up..
Okay...everyone else can stop attempting to cover Nick Drakes music now. lol. Beck not only added his own style to this masterpiece, he also did it in a way of not butchering it. Beautiful! Thank you for posting this.
I welcome other less popular people to cover this song. I agree that the song is a masterpiece. Beck's cover sounds like everything he does that is acoustic-based: slow-droned, over-compressed depressing crap. This cover is not enspiring and quite annoying; it has 2% of the original beauty. Beck could never write a song as permanent as Parasite.
Thank you for uploading this. Because of this song, I investigated Nick Drake's music too and opened a whole new musical discovery. I am fan of Beck's B-sides and most of his best work has not been on the radio or made it to MTV. This is a very good homage to this Nick Drake song.
this makes you feel like you're floating. there's another version by robyne dunn with a piano that's the most haunting of all (the album is called "jeremy flies")
Brilliant..absolutely brilliant!!..One excellent artist acknowledging another one. Drake is like a bottle of whiskey..completely intoxicating..beautifully poisoning..love u both!
Beck also did a great cover of John Martyn's "Stormbringer".

It's kinda cool listening to Beck singing without that whole gruely sound in his voice.
Awesome cover.

Wow, great cover and a great tribute to an even greater artist.
Sounds like beck is slowing the speed on his vocals as the song progresses, not sure about that....thoughts anyone?

that would be sweet if elliott smith was still alive and all he did was cover nick drake tunes

It was because of Beck I got into areas of music I wouldn't have considered beforehand. This artist is one of them.

not bad at all. Doesn't exactly create a name for itself but it doesn't bash the songs either. I personally of course like Drake's version better.

Not bad. It just doesn't convey the feeling of the original...or for that matter, the cover done by plectrum34...which is outstanding.

I'm not saying I don't like Beck. Beck is very talented, but this isn't the same as the original. Maybe I implied that before, but I take it back.

I agree, the original is really cool. No I get you. It's hard to do a cover of someone so epic! Covers rarely meet expectations.

Nick Drake
