Ubuntu doesn't truly capture the whole idea of free software. If it has incorrect drivers it automatically installs the proprietary software it needs to get everything working perfectly. At least with Debian (which now claims to be 100% free) you get to make the choice yourself.

@theyerdahl I'm Linux, I also cant play DVD's and mp3's and most other everyday formats without downloading potentially illegal codecs. No thanks. @rahmanroni Linux CAN play DVD's and mp3's, sure, you may have to download addons, but they're not illegal. My father is sixty years old, doesn't know anything about programming, and he uses Linux without a problem. You don't have to be a guru to operate Linux anymore, especially with the sexy GUI's in distributions like Kubuntu
@minigilani The mp3 coded licences for thousands of dollars. Same with dvd. The codecs downloadable are illegal. Also, why the hell do you have to use command lines to install programs. Shure theres .deb, which is easy, but they seem to be rare. And I don't want to be just using the apps in the ubuntu marketplace. Your dads 60, the most he ever does is probably email and web. You are alot better than Bill, Linus! keep up the good job!!! Thanks for giving us linux! I will allwais be your fan! XD Windows sucks! Macintosh is annoying and expencive. so we can tell that it sucks too! linux is the only good os!

Linux Torvalds....Creator of Linux operating system...WTF???? There aint no operating system called Linux. Try saying this to Richard stallman and the countless selfless developers who contributed to the GNU project. THey plead literally its not linux operating systems...its GNU/Linux...Hats of to Linus for this awesome work, but dont forget the founders and the real heroes
To this day bill refuses to fix his vulnerable registry,I believe in 20 years linux will hold 25% of the os market. The better linux gets the more people will use it.
@supergenius1994 Yes, now he has a foundation that researches health and all that stuff. He retired from Microsoft, but has a foundation. Apparently, Ballmer is now in charge of everything. All this information i got from Wikipedia.
Without a Kernel, no System can work, MS Windows has a Kernel too, but the Kernel Ildetimes are badly in windows^^ for example i can use my gentoo on a pc with 600Mhz and 64MiB of ram, windows xp cant work on it, thats crazy^^ -- CasioBeatz
The kernel is what makes an OS run. Stallman wasn't able to get his GNU system working until the kernel was made by Torvalds. I'd say that's a rather big part.
the problem with linux is that , its not linux fault if there is some discrepancies with certain hardware, its the hardware manufacturers fault , they dont always provide drivers for linux, they always provide drivers and support for MS by the MS law , OEMs, otherwise they go out of business.
but as of now, ubuntu and fedora work with pretty much every piece of hardware, except hardware that has software only available for windows. i dual boot with ubuntu ,some minor problems but nothing serious
they sure can, but are they available when u need it? ,lots of people want to replace windows with linux but they fail to understand that there will be at least one problem that they will have to deal with, i can list a lot of hardware devices for the PC and u will find out that many of those dont work with linux not because they are not detected , but because of the software , which is written 99.9% for windows and that 0.1% is for the MAC, luckily virtualization is the answer
I do this sort of thing for a living and Im telling you linux will work on 99% of computers out there. If there is not a driver in the downloaded package be confident that you will find one or a comparable one on the net. Linux is so good today that I would gladly pay for it . its just that good. When vista first came out I had to manually hunt for drivers for my desktop same can be said with 7.
you are 100% right that linux would work if its installed on any modern pc as well as old pcs, and the drivers are also available , what is not easy to find or its just not available is the software that comes with some printers or cameras. other than that , linux is pretty badass and fast (fedora)
Good argument and I agree. If the device application software does not run in wine or some other emulator then you could use linux branded software for your printer or camera. I still use windows because there is automation software that i run thru it but would love to be able to try linux thru rslogix
use google and the forum to see why it doesnt work or a way to make it work. secondly check you hardware drivers and download teh propietory drivers for your wifi. dont blame teh system if your a dumbass
ubuntu is nice yeah .. but i personally love linux mint 8 .. its ubuntu + bugfixes + codecs+flash+java i dont really see a reason why i should go back to ubuntu. its faster and much easier with mint. ubuntu 9.10 ISSS soo buggy compared to linux mint 8. you can try mint and tell me what you think..
I tried mint, but the display was too bright even with the drivers,it hurt my eyes, dont know why,but ubuntu 64 display isnt too bright with default drivers.
Linus wasn't in it for the money, that's why it doesn't have that market like Microsoft with those big fat cats. Even if he was in it for the money it wouldn't of mattered he says not in this vid but originally that he made it hands down cause he has nothing better to do, and if I meet this man I got to shake his hand and say, you made the best contribution to the History of man kind.
@NerdForMIT I know Linux since 1995 at that time there was serious problems with hardware. But today it is best operating sistem in the world. Today it needs little advertisement.
@oriaxaim well any software in it's birth is going to have it's issues. but with some time things get better and im running ubuntu and it loves my hardware, even when there is issues you can fix it like nothing.
I have installed fedora and ubuntu linux on machines that are new and some that are not so new but all support the min requirements. it does not matter intel, Amd chipsets all should work never had a problem of a device not working. U should be able to hardwire connect to support center and you will find the solution as I have done or you can get individual tech support as well for complex problems.
Bro, it does work. Try Ubuntu 9.10 it is awesome. As a windows user all my life I tried this o/s initialy with negativity however it just makes sense and I have changed my mind about linux. I can do most everything I did in vista/Xp and it has never crashed or locked up to date but would you believe it free? I don't know how they manage to stay around with freestuff but it sure beats the living hell out of paying $100-$500 for Msoft stuff. I can play Most all Msoft games with a little tweaking.
It wasn't Linus' idea to create a free operating system, Linux was simply a hobby project of his that became popular. Judging from Linus' usenet post, he never intended for it be apart of a full operating system. Linus started Linux in 1991. The Gnu project started up in 1983, and it's goal was to create a free operating system. Gnu created everything necessary for a free OS except a kernel and the windows system, which Linux and X filled in. That's why some people call it Gnu/Linux.
And strangely, it's not GNU's contributors, X's contributors or Linux's contributors but just Linus who gets credit for the entire system.
When people understand the reason behind free software is when Microsoft and Apple, and all proprietary software will become obsolete, which it should be, for the sake of common sense (Why should I agree to using software if I must agree not to change it for myself, give it to someone who wants it, or improve it and give it to my community?)
He gave us a free kernel cause he had the knowledge to build one and we're all thankful for that. He just needs a bit of history guidance now. I need to build an enlightenment setup for displaying video with minimal overheads now. Thats what you get for building your machines out of junk, lol.
GNU is an operating system, otherwise gnu (dot) org would not say "GNU Operating System" at the top of the page. Also, in the GNU initial announcement, it says "We hope to supply, eventually, everything useful that normally comes with a Unix system"
GNU isn't an operating system. Linux (the kernel) is the operating system. Despite what GNU claims, you don't need editors, compilers, shells, or even a libc to have an operating system (you don't do much without those things, but that doesn't make them required).
Alos, if Richard Stallman spent half the time working on Hurd as he does bitching about people saying "Linux" instead of "GNU/Linux", Hurd would be done by now.
@demoncontrol So you're saying in order to have a fully working system, you don't need a shell? Also, your system would be almost completely useless without Coreutils. And Linux is compiled with gcc (GNU Compiler Collection (C Compiler)). Sure, Linux IS an operating system in the minimalistic sense, but not in the way Torvalds tries to say it is. On Kernel (dot) org, it reads "you want what is called a distribution of Linux, which is a complete Linux system." There is no "complete Linux system."
Of course you don't need a shell. Just about every product using embedded linux boots directly into a custom init. There may be a shell for remote maintenance, but the product never uses it directly. Also, you can replace ANY portion of a typical linux installation with non-GNU software. GCC can replaced with ICC (a non-gnu compiler), bash can be replaced with zsh (a non-gnu shell), and non-gnu coreutil replacements exist. The only thing I can't (easily) replace is the kernel: Linux.
@demoncontrol You can replace the kernel. Nexentra created a GNU/kOpenSolaris distribution. What about Debian's GNU/kFreeBSD and GNU/HURD distributions? Almost every time you say "Linux", what are you referring to? The GNU/Linux system. Don't even say "you don't need this, or don't need that" because the question is "what do you actually use?".
Hurd isn't close to being done, so it's not an option. I use Gentoo (because it's superior to any Debian based distro).
Let's wave a magic wand and replace the Windows GUI with KDE4 (only the windows kernel remains). Would you seriously claim that the operating system is KDE?
GNU is an operating system, by one definition of operating system (the definition used by Unix) meaning a collection of interacting software (i.e., components of a system) that operate a computer (i.e., an operating system). A kernel is just one component of a system, that can not by itself operate a computer and be called just a kernel, like Linux is.
Also, the reason Hurd isn't finished is because it's ambitious, very well-thought out, so more difficult to implement.
Windows are fragile panes of glass. Apples are unsubstantial fruit. Linux? Linux is a goddam force.

Ok, I wasn't sure how close GNU was to making a kernel.
But yeah. Linus himself said that linux is getting bloated.
rosstripi 2 years ago
@Hax0rPr0n
The kernel is what makes an OS run. Stallman wasn't able to get his GNU system working until the kernel was made by Torvalds. I'd say that's a rather big part.

the problem with linux is that , its not linux fault if there is some discrepancies with certain hardware, its the hardware manufacturers fault , they dont always provide drivers for linux, they always provide drivers and support for MS by the MS law , OEMs, otherwise they go out of business.
but as of now, ubuntu and fedora work with pretty much every piece of hardware, except hardware that has software only available for windows. i dual boot with ubuntu ,some minor problems but nothing serious
numenor20091 2 years ago
Cant the developers write their own drivers?
MrTabby5000 2 years ago
@MrTabby5000
they sure can, but are they available when u need it? ,lots of people want to replace windows with linux but they fail to understand that there will be at least one problem that they will have to deal with, i can list a lot of hardware devices for the PC and u will find out that many of those dont work with linux not because they are not detected , but because of the software , which is written 99.9% for windows and that 0.1% is for the MAC, luckily virtualization is the answer
numenor20091 2 years ago
I do this sort of thing for a living and Im telling you linux will work on 99% of computers out there. If there is not a driver in the downloaded package be confident that you will find one or a comparable one on the net. Linux is so good today that I would gladly pay for it . its just that good. When vista first came out I had to manually hunt for drivers for my desktop same can be said with 7.
valdi9165 2 years ago
@valdi9165
you are 100% right that linux would work if its installed on any modern pc as well as old pcs, and the drivers are also available , what is not easy to find or its just not available is the software that comes with some printers or cameras. other than that , linux is pretty badass and fast (fedora)
numenor20091 2 years ago
Good argument and I agree. If the device application software does not run in wine or some other emulator then you could use linux branded software for your printer or camera. I still use windows because there is automation software that i run thru it but would love to be able to try linux thru rslogix
valdi9165 2 years ago
Well opensuse is installed,I have nvidia drivers, the old glass monitor and I see the 60hz flicker.
The 60 hz flicker is irritating me,this is my point<tried to install drivers and gives be the red error thingy. Now you see why windows is easier.
MrTabby5000 2 years ago
@MrTabby5000
ubuntu 9.10 already ships with nvidia drivers
you could probably get a better screen refresh rate under ubuntu, u can use the live cd to test it

ubuntu is nice yeah .. but i personally love linux mint 8 .. its ubuntu + bugfixes + codecs+flash+java i dont really see a reason why i should go back to ubuntu. its faster and much easier with mint. ubuntu 9.10 ISSS soo buggy compared to linux mint 8. you can try mint and tell me what you think..
Raja221 1 year ago
@Raja221
I tried mint, but the display was too bright even with the drivers,it hurt my eyes, dont know why,but ubuntu 64 display isnt too bright with default drivers.

Linus wasn't in it for the money, that's why it doesn't have that market like Microsoft with those big fat cats. Even if he was in it for the money it wouldn't of mattered he says not in this vid but originally that he made it hands down cause he has nothing better to do, and if I meet this man I got to shake his hand and say, you made the best contribution to the History of man kind.

hovrashko 2 years ago
I have installed fedora and ubuntu linux on machines that are new and some that are not so new but all support the min requirements. it does not matter intel, Amd chipsets all should work never had a problem of a device not working. U should be able to hardwire connect to support center and you will find the solution as I have done or you can get individual tech support as well for complex problems.
valdi9165 2 years ago
Bro, it does work. Try Ubuntu 9.10 it is awesome. As a windows user all my life I tried this o/s initialy with negativity however it just makes sense and I have changed my mind about linux. I can do most everything I did in vista/Xp and it has never crashed or locked up to date but would you believe it free? I don't know how they manage to stay around with freestuff but it sure beats the living hell out of paying $100-$500 for Msoft stuff. I can play Most all Msoft games with a little tweaking.
valdi9165 2 years ago
Not with my wifi,Im trying opensuse and hope another one of my dvds isnt garbage.

Linus is a true genius. An open source operating system is what this world needs, and now we have it. Great plan from the start.
MyLowBattery 2 years ago 3
It wasn't Linus' idea to create a free operating system, Linux was simply a hobby project of his that became popular. Judging from Linus' usenet post, he never intended for it be apart of a full operating system. Linus started Linux in 1991. The Gnu project started up in 1983, and it's goal was to create a free operating system. Gnu created everything necessary for a free OS except a kernel and the windows system, which Linux and X filled in. That's why some people call it Gnu/Linux.
Arkblu 2 years ago
And strangely, it's not GNU's contributors, X's contributors or Linux's contributors but just Linus who gets credit for the entire system.
When people understand the reason behind free software is when Microsoft and Apple, and all proprietary software will become obsolete, which it should be, for the sake of common sense (Why should I agree to using software if I must agree not to change it for myself, give it to someone who wants it, or improve it and give it to my community?)
andrew11235 2 years ago
He gave us a free kernel cause he had the knowledge to build one and we're all thankful for that. He just needs a bit of history guidance now. I need to build an enlightenment setup for displaying video with minimal overheads now. Thats what you get for building your machines out of junk, lol.

religion can have a great affect on philosophy you can be atheist and still be a good person but everyone has their own opinion
halopersin 2 years ago
All he did was create a kernel which led into a full project. What does religion have to do with that, especially since he doesn't have one?

GNU is an operating system, otherwise gnu (dot) org would not say "GNU Operating System" at the top of the page. Also, in the GNU initial announcement, it says "We hope to supply, eventually, everything useful that normally comes with a Unix system"
meoblast001 2 years ago
GNU isn't an operating system. Linux (the kernel) is the operating system. Despite what GNU claims, you don't need editors, compilers, shells, or even a libc to have an operating system (you don't do much without those things, but that doesn't make them required).
Alos, if Richard Stallman spent half the time working on Hurd as he does bitching about people saying "Linux" instead of "GNU/Linux", Hurd would be done by now.
demoncontrol 2 years ago 13
@demoncontrol So you're saying in order to have a fully working system, you don't need a shell? Also, your system would be almost completely useless without Coreutils. And Linux is compiled with gcc (GNU Compiler Collection (C Compiler)). Sure, Linux IS an operating system in the minimalistic sense, but not in the way Torvalds tries to say it is. On Kernel (dot) org, it reads "you want what is called a distribution of Linux, which is a complete Linux system." There is no "complete Linux system."
meoblast001 2 years ago
Of course you don't need a shell. Just about every product using embedded linux boots directly into a custom init. There may be a shell for remote maintenance, but the product never uses it directly. Also, you can replace ANY portion of a typical linux installation with non-GNU software. GCC can replaced with ICC (a non-gnu compiler), bash can be replaced with zsh (a non-gnu shell), and non-gnu coreutil replacements exist. The only thing I can't (easily) replace is the kernel: Linux.
demoncontrol 2 years ago
@demoncontrol You can replace the kernel. Nexentra created a GNU/kOpenSolaris distribution. What about Debian's GNU/kFreeBSD and GNU/HURD distributions? Almost every time you say "Linux", what are you referring to? The GNU/Linux system. Don't even say "you don't need this, or don't need that" because the question is "what do you actually use?".
meoblast001 2 years ago
Hurd isn't close to being done, so it's not an option. I use Gentoo (because it's superior to any Debian based distro).
Let's wave a magic wand and replace the Windows GUI with KDE4 (only the windows kernel remains). Would you seriously claim that the operating system is KDE?
demoncontrol 2 years ago
No, and no.
