  • Windows are fragile panes of glass. Apples are unsubstantial fruit. Linux? Linux is a goddam force.

  • "a vhs tape"

    A what now?

  • Watching this on my Windows PC and enjoying the viruses that I got from PornHub.

  • No Linus. Not Linux. It's GNU/Linux.

  • Linus has one ugly wife.

  • Linux = Freedom!

  • Ubuntu doesn't truly capture the whole idea of free software. If it has incorrect drivers it automatically installs the proprietary software it needs to get everything working perfectly. At least with Debian (which now claims to be 100% free) you get to make the choice yourself.

Not hating on Ubuntu, in fact it's what I'm using right now. Just saying that Ubuntu users who think they are hard core Linux enthusiasts need to think about this.

  • watchin from debian linux ftw!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lmao 1:26 where they eating PHO? lol

  • Imagine not having access to Mozart.

    Software is no less.

  • LOL, now it is 2011 and it happen microsoft baby is no longer in my book. I used linux in 1999 and got ride of it do to lack of hardware support. I switched back in 2006 and man Hardware support is better then Windows out of the box. Boot time are better and games or getting better. I don't run windows on my laptop on-line is just way better.

  • Watching on my Ubuntu 10.4 laptop. Which I got for free as the Windows o/s was all crapped up and unusable to the previous owner.

As has been said before, Linux FTW. :-)

  • @Chameleon102 I need help with ubuntu please help me out man

  • Linus is too smart..

  • @doomkun see "bill gates too smart"

  • IT'S THE GAMES STUPID! ;)

kids want to have fun and the little penguin must learn to play

  • bill gates dedicated his company to his dick micro and soft

  • Unlike Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, he is not money hungry. Linux is free from the first day it saw the sun. Just admire him too much!!

  • Linux FTW!!!

  • what is a kernel?

  • @prence1725 kernel is the software that manages the resources of your computer. it is also a translator between software and hardware.

  • @prence1725 In this case its the base of the linux operating system. Like the terminal, commands, functions, etc. Keep On Linuxing! :D

  • 0:09

Linux isint a operating system, its a kernel.

  • @Mastermind12358 GNU alone is less of an Operating System than Linux alone...

  • Arch Linux & Linux Mint!

  • 1 person uses Windows

  • Watching this from Fedora

    LINUX FTW !!!

  • Quake! This dude is the fucking man!

  • so he's a capitalist? Linux is free? I'm lost?

  • @ShroukiePoo Free refers to freedom and even if it was referring to cost that would not contradict with the idea of capitalism.

  • Quake at 1:55

  • 1 dislike is Bill Gates :D

  • Linux speaks English with a fine Ameircan accent that it seems creepy

  • Of course Linus fucked microsoft. Think about it, microsoft can't make that much money on the server side since linux is popular there and linux is the reason why google is out there, and google is fucking microsoft on both the search engine and the mobile market.

  • Linus FTW

  • 1 person uses windows.

  • @Hax0rPr0n omg its so funny hope it wasn t real xDDDDDDD linus did it i think xDDD

  • 2 percent of the market, not exactly eating microsoft haha

  • @backupcoolm3n look at the server market

  • @sebbeks Bill Gates did not like this video.

  • @jquiroga2k HAHAHA Awesome reply.

Watching from my dual booted Ubuntu 11.04 and BT5

  • 1:57 - Quake II with Red Hat on top of it, aaahh, where did those years go... It's ubuntu or fedora with quakelive now aye ))

  • is he eating ramen? i want some too!

  • @Julien1345

    I think he's eating pho.

  • Linux > Microsoft, Slackware Linux ftw!

  • Was Linus eating Pho?

  • love how the american twat of a presenter assumes because just because he made something free because its enjoyable itself means that he is some kind of communist.

  • @Stephanavich Yeah like, hurr durr do you hate money?!

  • ya me too from ubuntu.

He's not swedish, he's finnish. Why is his english so damn good? <_<; He sounds like a perfect native

  • in my opinion, Microsofts whole "killer software" thing is kind of annoying.

  • han uttalar ju ganska bra engelska för att vara finlandssvensk

  • Finns are the best!

  • @BloodyRevolution1 hes swedish ;)

  • @SonnengottVideos he was borned in finland and he speaks finnish.

  • Hey look that Linux guy.Windows is also a good OS,but Unix also.I personally like Microsoft Windows more, but i guess Linux is also good.

    Watched on Microsoft Windows 7!

  • @theallcanadian

    Watching this from Win7.

    Mac OS FTW!!

    hurr hurr derp

  • I am proud that he's Finnish and the principal creator of the greatest kernel on the market

  • This guy is my hero :)

  • We don't take fascist crap like that from Microsoft any more!

  • we love linux!!, linuxsuz olmuyor yauw helal olsun valla

  • Mandriva and Arch Linux FTW!! Ubuntu is for noobs!!

  • @mexaviwer True, but we are all noobs at one point...Besides Ubuntu gets everyone into linux. Not just techies.

  • NERD!!!

    XD

    Obrigado pelo Linux!

  • he's slimmed down quite a bit...

  • Happy birthday Linux!! 17 Sept 1991 Linus Torvalds released version 0.01 of Linux kernel as Free Software! World thanks you for this!! You and RMS are thinkers.

    Bill is straight shit.

  • @lin545 But invented the PC...your a dipshit.

  • @IVgrandtheftauto Yeah, lookup here who Gary Kildall was. They stole it from him and killed him after.Windows is an OS of choice for assholes and loosers. Your comments reflect that perfectly. Im glad I never use that dipshit OS of yours.

  • @lin545 I looked it up.The base is from Gary Kildall.Microsoft copied it,and made MS-DOS.And then Microsoft Windows 95..and then XP...after that Shitsta.And then WINDOWS 7!

  • @lin545 I looked it up.The base is from Gary Kildall.Microsoft copied it,and made MS-DOS.And then Microsoft Windows 95..and then XP...after that Shitsta. And then WINDOWS 7!But who are you calling dipshit?Did you comment this on Linsux?

  • @IVgrandtheftauto You didnt look up, you should have watched at and researched. They chinese-walled DR-DOS of Kildall to the point it kinda works. Made an arrangement with IBM (Bills mother was very known in circles) of know-how transfer via Project OS/2. Then made Gary unable to talk via NDA and set impossible conditions,to which he refused. Later they all lied Gary prefered golf to the meeting with IBM (vid of Bill telling this is here)and when Gary decided to break silence they killed him.

  • @IVgrandtheftauto Im calling the OS your love a dipshit. Im calling microsuck the dipshit. Im calling "general consumer" a dipshit. This might include you as well, you decide. Every microsuck OS is preinstalled straight from first DOS. IBM was controlling computers that days, then they did IQ transfer and continue to control the market under name microsuck now. Every person knows this. You know their recent "fun"? They removed "What you hear" option from audio card recording. Stay tuned!

  • @lin545 And you did it on Linsux...and i will stay tuned! And its not Microsucks, its Microsoft!Just like Crapple...ever used there OS before?

  • @IVgrandtheftauto Lol, its microsUX, learn to spell! I did it on freaking Wii running Linux and Firefox on top. Enjoy!

  • @lin545 No i do'nt like the WII.Get me a XBOX 360 JASPER version!!!And yes,Microsoft is the good word!!!Want to read it on WiKi ?

  • @IVgrandtheftauto

There are linux ports for xbox and ps3 as well.

    Whats so good about ms?

Look, they started a compaign recently to charge users of Android phones, because it used some sort of java algorithm that some microsoft guy has registered before(not invented, not developed, but registered).

    So whats good about microsux?

  • @lin545

Thats weird.Android,is from Google.Google works with the Microsoft Corporation, their OS,Windows Phone 7,is on the HTC.And why does Microsoft need to end their campaign? Its an registered trademark.

Thats why the Microsoft Corporation is good.Have fun with Linsux.

  • @IVgrandtheftauto

Android is pure linux kernel, update your links!

Google works ON linux(google.com) as well as youtube(this site) is linux powered.

WP7 and ms are non-related to linux or google.

Google, in its android OS, used some commonsense methods.

And exactly same method was patented before by ms.

    It is called patent trap.

Say, I patent the method to drive the car safely.Which is common sense, but I describe so that it gets registered. Then, you owe me. See, it microsucks. :)

  • he's a lousy pool player.

  • Hi, I'm a Mac.

    And I'm a PC.

And I'm Linux, the programmer's favorite.

  • @theyerdahl I'm Linux, I also cant play DVD's and mp3's and most other everyday formats without downloading potentially illegal codecs. No thanks. It may be programmers favorite, but its a consumers worst nightmare. I like how its free and can run on almost every computer, new or old, but its not exactly the most consumer friendly os, and support is kinda non existent. Shady online forums are basically your only source of answers.

  • @rahmanroni Linux CAN play DVD's and mp3's, sure, you may have to download addons, but they're not illegal. I see you're one of the few people who tried to use Linux, epically failed, and now speak against it, not realizing that it was your own incompetence that made you fail. My father is sixty years old, doesn't know anything about programming, and he uses Linux without a problem. You don't have to be a guru to operate Linux anymore, especially with the sexy GUI's in distributions like Kubuntu

  • @minigilani The mp3 coded licences for thousands of dollars. Same with dvd. The codecs downloadable are illegal. Also, why the hell do you have to use command lines to install programs. Shure theres .deb, which is easy, but they seem to be rare. And I don't want to be just using the apps in the ubuntu marketplace. Your dads 60, the most he ever does is probably email and web. Ive found linuxmint to be a good backup operating system for my win7 pc however

  • @rahmanroni Not every country has software patents.

  • @minigilani And it still doesnt answer the question of support. The founder of canonical has money to go to space, but not money to license codecs or provide a bit more support. Linux is great in many ways, but its not consumer friendly yet. It will hopefully get there someday. And maybe its market share will go above its current (less than 1%) usage.

  • You are alot better than Bill, Linus! keep up the good job!!! Thanks for giving us linux! I will allwais be your fan! XD Windows sucks! Macintosh is annoying and expencive. so we can tell that it sucks too! linux is the only good os!

  • Watching this from Ubuntu.

    Linux FTW!

  • @theallcanadian samefag

  • @theallcanadian Screw Ubuntu

  • @daniel1982 no problem

it's only for people who have an iq over 40

    sorry dude!

  • @theallcanadian MInt here!!!

  • @theallcanadian me too

  • @theallcanadian Same here

  • @theallcanadian I am too.

  • @theallcanadian Same

  • @theallcanadian

ubuntu REALLY wow man ur so leet let me piss under myself from you ubuntu REALLY zomg /sarcasm

  • Interesting view of despotism and software, I am impressed~

  • is it possible to hack linux?

  • @arewr666 Yes, of course.

  • @arewr666 I dont think so, but maybie yes, if the user is stupid, opens a port and dont have installed firewall. But a hacket that dont know how to edit/hack linux surrce code, is useless. But deletind /bin/*** will destroy the comp (But you must have administrative rights! XD) I think that hacking a linux is useless, you cant delete anything that is Root's, So. But i heard there are some Linux viruses, they tryed to infect Linux servers. But hopefully they are not so mutch of them as Win virs

  • YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP GUYS!!

    (15 years later)

OKAY GUYS THIS IS IT THE YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP!!

  • Screw Bill Gates, and Screw Steve Jobs!

    This guy is the shit!

  • @enterprise0709 YEAH!

  • Linux Torvalds....Creator of Linux operating system...WTF???? There aint no operating system called Linux. Try saying this to Richard stallman and the countless selfless developers who contributed to the GNU project. THey plead literally its not linux operating systems...its GNU/Linux...Hats of to Linus for this awesome work, but dont forget the founders and the real heroes

  • @gnmithun no, it is still linux

  • He's so cute...totally handsome & Humble... i love him, i'd marry him in 2 nanosec.

  • Thank for posting !!!! great Linux OS

  • @karitakki

    Y LOVE LINUX (L)

  • thanks linus for creating linux

  • Linux has improved and evolved with the times, just installed ubuntu lynx 10.04 and its perfect.

  • i cnt belive linus joined microsoft

  • He is your god, and you shall pray to him.

  • He is your god, and you shall pray to him.

  • God bless you Linus Torvalds!

  • To this day bill refuses to fix his vulnerable registry,I believe in 20 years linux will hold 25% of the os market. The better linux gets the more people will use it.

  • @MrTabby5000 Uhhhh, Bill retired a long time ago.

  • @MrCadefulp

    he still has input.

  • @MrCadefulp he did?

  • @supergenius1994 Yes, now he has a foundation that researches health and all that stuff. He retired from Microsoft, but has a foundation. Apparently, Ballmer is now in charge of everything. All this information i got from Wikipedia.

  • @ Hax0rPr0n

Without a Kernel, no System can work, MS Windows has a Kernel too, but the Kernel Ildetimes are badly in windows^^ for example i can use my gentoo on a pc with 600Mhz and 64MiB of ram, windows xp cant work on it, thats crazy^^ -- CasioBeatz

  • Down with the tyranny Microsoft , people need to wake up and smell the cofee that open source is the way to go.

  • Microsoft will eventually be history.

  • @Hax0rPr0n

Ok, I wasn't sure how close GNU was to making a kernel.

But yeah. Linus himself said that linux is getting bloated.

  • @Hax0rPr0n

The kernel is what makes an OS run. Stallman wasn't able to get his GNU system working until the kernel was made by Torvalds. I'd say that's a rather big part.

  • he is an AMAZING guy!

  • He is awesome!

  • the problem with linux is that , its not linux fault if there is some discrepancies with certain hardware, its the hardware manufacturers fault , they dont always provide drivers for linux, they always provide drivers and support for MS by the MS law , OEMs, otherwise they go out of business.

but as of now, ubuntu and fedora work with pretty much every piece of hardware, except hardware that has software only available for windows. i dual boot with ubuntu ,some minor problems but nothing serious

  • Cant the developers write their own drivers?

  • @MrTabby5000

they sure can, but are they available when u need it? ,lots of people want to replace windows with linux but they fail to understand that there will be at least one problem that they will have to deal with, i can list a lot of hardware devices for the PC and u will find out that many of those dont work with linux not because they are not detected , but because of the software , which is written 99.9% for windows and that 0.1% is for the MAC, luckily virtualization is the answer

  • I do this sort of thing for a living and Im telling you linux will work on 99% of computers out there. If there is not a driver in the downloaded package be confident that you will find one or a comparable one on the net. Linux is so good today that I would gladly pay for it . its just that good. When vista first came out I had to manually hunt for drivers for my desktop same can be said with 7.

  • @valdi9165

you are 100% right that linux would work if its installed on any modern pc as well as old pcs, and the drivers are also available , what is not easy to find or its just not available is the software that comes with some printers or cameras. other than that , linux is pretty badass and fast (fedora)

  • Good argument and I agree. If the device application software does not run in wine or some other emulator then you could use linux branded software for your printer or camera. I still use windows because there is automation software that i run thru it but would love to be able to try linux thru rslogix

  • Well opensuse is installed,I have nvidia drivers, the old glass monitor and I see the 60hz flicker.

The 60 hz flicker is irritating me,this is my point<tried to install drivers and gives be the red error thingy. Now you see why windows is easier.

  • @MrTabby5000

ubuntu 9.10 already ships with nvidia drivers

you could probably get a better screen refresh rate under ubuntu, u can use the live cd to test it

  • Ubuntu 9.1 doesnt work with my wifi,tried it,I give up f u c k linux,back to windows.goodbye.

  • use google and the forum to see why it doesnt work or a way to make it work. secondly check you hardware drivers and download teh propietory drivers for your wifi. dont blame teh system if your a dumbass

  • @Raja221

WRONG DISTRO figured out ubuntu works great and will keep,do I have to install a new updated kernal or just wait till 10.04 comes out?

  • ubuntu is nice yeah .. but i personally love linux mint 8 .. its ubuntu + bugfixes + codecs+flash+java i dont really see a reason why i should go back to ubuntu. its faster and much easier with mint. ubuntu 9.10 ISSS soo buggy compared to linux mint 8. you can try mint and tell me what you think..

  • @Raja221

I tried mint, but the display was too bright even with the drivers,it hurt my eyes, dont know why,but ubuntu 64 display isnt too bright with default drivers.

  • I remember the 90s when linux wasnt compatible with anything.

  • may because that's when they just started?

  • Linus wasn't in it for the money, that's why it doesn't have that market like Microsoft with those big fat cats. Even if he was in it for the money it wouldn't of mattered he says not in this vid but originally that he made it hands down cause he has nothing better to do, and if I meet this man I got to shake his hand and say, you made the best contribution to the History of man kind.

  • @NerdForMIT I know Linux since 1995 at that time there was serious problems with hardware. But today it is best operating sistem in the world. Today it needs little advertisement.

  • @oriaxaim well any software in it's birth is going to have it's issues. but with some time things get better and im running ubuntu and it loves my hardware, even when there is issues you can fix it like nothing.

  • If it wasn't him then someone else at that time would have stepped up and developed an open source kernel based on unix.

  • Linus not just genius, he is super genius =) with Linux and community i hope Microshit eventually will file bankruptcy =)

  • Maybe if linux actually worked maybe, but until that day comes,it wont happen.

  • what do you mean "worked"? its working, that is windows "worked" for 5 first restarts!. Bill G. is scam, f*cking capitalist!

  • I tried fedora, ubuntu, linux mint and none worked with my motherboard and wifi adapter on my desktop and notebook.

I have intel and nvidia video.

  • i wish i could help you, but this is not a Linux forums, wrong place.

  • I have installed fedora and ubuntu linux on machines that are new and some that are not so new but all support the min requirements. it does not matter intel, Amd chipsets all should work never had a problem of a device not working. U should be able to hardwire connect to support center and you will find the solution as I have done or you can get individual tech support as well for complex problems.

  • Bro, it does work. Try Ubuntu 9.10 it is awesome. As a windows user all my life I tried this o/s initialy with negativity however it just makes sense and I have changed my mind about linux. I can do most everything I did in vista/Xp and it has never crashed or locked up to date but would you believe it free? I don't know how they manage to stay around with freestuff but it sure beats the living hell out of paying $100-$500 for Msoft stuff. I can play Most all Msoft games with a little tweaking.

  • Not with my wifi,Im trying opensuse and hope another one of my dvds isnt garbage.

  • Linus is a true genius. An open source operating system is what this world needs, and now we have it. Great plan from the start.

  • It wasn't Linus' idea to create a free operating system, Linux was simply a hobby project of his that became popular. Judging from Linus' usenet post, he never intended for it be apart of a full operating system. Linus started Linux in 1991. The Gnu project started up in 1983, and it's goal was to create a free operating system. Gnu created everything necessary for a free OS except a kernel and the windows system, which Linux and X filled in. That's why some people call it Gnu/Linux.

  • And strangely, it's not GNU's contributors, X's contributors or Linux's contributors but just Linus who gets credit for the entire system.

When people understand the reason behind free software is when Microsoft and Apple, and all proprietary software will become obsolete, which it should be, for the sake of common sense (Why should I agree to using software if I must agree not to change it for myself, give it to someone who wants it, or improve it and give it to my community?)

  • He gave us a free kernel cause he had the knowledge to build one and we're all thankful for that. He just needs a bit of history guidance now. I need to build an enlightenment setup for displaying video with minimal overheads now. Thats what you get for building your machines out of junk, lol.

  • im a christian and dont believe in his atheism but he is still a great man

  • what does his atheism have to do with it???

  • religion can have a great affect on philosophy you can be atheist and still be a good person but everyone has their own opinion

  • All he did was create a kernel which led into a full project. What does religion have to do with that, especially since he doesn't have one?

  • Linus Torvalds. Very humble and a good man.

  • GNU is an operating system, otherwise gnu (dot) org would not say "GNU Operating System" at the top of the page. Also, in the GNU initial announcement, it says "We hope to supply, eventually, everything useful that normally comes with a Unix system"

  • GNU isn't an operating system. Linux (the kernel) is the operating system. Despite what GNU claims, you don't need editors, compilers, shells, or even a libc to have an operating system (you don't do much without those things, but that doesn't make them required).

Alos, if Richard Stallman spent half the time working on Hurd as he does bitching about people saying "Linux" instead of "GNU/Linux", Hurd would be done by now.

  • @demoncontrol So you're saying in order to have a fully working system, you don't need a shell? Also, your system would be almost completely useless without Coreutils. And Linux is compiled with gcc (GNU Compiler Collection (C Compiler)). Sure, Linux IS an operating system in the minimalistic sense, but not in the way Torvalds tries to say it is. On Kernel (dot) org, it reads "you want what is called a distribution of Linux, which is a complete Linux system." There is no "complete Linux system."

  • Of course you don't need a shell. Just about every product using embedded linux boots directly into a custom init. There may be a shell for remote maintenance, but the product never uses it directly. Also, you can replace ANY portion of a typical linux installation with non-GNU software. GCC can replaced with ICC (a non-gnu compiler), bash can be replaced with zsh (a non-gnu shell), and non-gnu coreutil replacements exist. The only thing I can't (easily) replace is the kernel: Linux.

  • @demoncontrol You can replace the kernel. Nexentra created a GNU/kOpenSolaris distribution. What about Debian's GNU/kFreeBSD and GNU/HURD distributions? Almost every time you say "Linux", what are you referring to? The GNU/Linux system. Don't even say "you don't need this, or don't need that" because the question is "what do you actually use?".

  • Hurd isn't close to being done, so it's not an option. I use Gentoo (because it's superior to any Debian based distro).

Let's wave a magic wand and replace the Windows GUI with KDE4 (only the windows kernel remains). Would you seriously claim that the operating system is KDE?

  • No, and no.

GNU is an operating system, by one definition of operating system (the definition used by Unix) meaning a collection of interacting software (i.e., components of a system) that operate a computer (i.e., an operating system). A kernel is just one component of a system, that can not by itself operate a computer and be called just a kernel, like Linux is.

Also, the reason Hurd isn't finished is because it's ambitious, very well-thought out, so more difficult to implement.

  • Linus needs moar neckbeard!

  • microsoft is his baby

  • Newscasters always are so serious its not even funny xD Like someone died :o

  • The only thing I would suggest to Linus is for longer life for him to fully see his vision he should do some stomach crunches.
