"Just to reiterate, this video is NOT targetted at those with type 1 or type 2 diabetes."
So just exactly what type of diabetes are you warning about the risk of, gestational?
This is still exactly the wrong message. I bet the pitch came form people who don't live with diabetes. When getting involved with World Diabetes Day is fighting the promotion of ignorance by World Diabetes Day online I think I'll take the blue circle OFF and skip World Diabetes Day.
@BadShoe This video is aimed at those at risk of diabetes, not at people living with the condition. World Diabetes Day is a multi-faceted global campaign, which operates on many levels. WDD celebrates the lives of people with diabetes and raises awareness of the condition. It's also an opportunity to reach out to the millions at risk of type 2 diabetes and convince policy-makers to fund diabetes research that may someday lead to a cure.
We'll soon have videos for people living with diabetes.
This video is very distressing. As a parent of a child with a complication, the first thing I thought of was all the people that know us, imagining my son with one foot. I appreciate that it is obviously aimed at people with high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, but we all (type 1 and type 2)have to share "that" word. I think it is a poor choice, personally. I have to say I was very disappointed to see WDD's name attached to it.
@TheNovorapid We are truly sorry for offending your sensitivities and stand by you and your child as you'll stay in control of diabetes.
World Diabetes Day is a multi-faceted global campaign, which means different things to different people. WDD celebrates the lives of people with diabetes. We also can't miss out on the opportunity to spread awareness to the general public and reach out to the millions at risk of type 2 diabetes. There will soon be more videos for those living with diabetes.
Just to reiterate, this video is NOT targetted at those with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. It's aimed at the millions of people around the world who are at high risk of diabetes but don't get tested because they don't think diabetes is serious.
We also reach out to policy-makers and governments the world over who need strong messages to convince them to fund diabetes and integrate diabetes care into primary healthcare systems.
We have more videos planned to salute people with diabetes.
We appreciate your feedback. Thanks very much for it. Those of us who truly know about the types of diabetes and how to manage it are a minority. We think everyone with diabetes - whether in control or struggling with it - is a hero. Soon, we'll have a series of campaign videos depicting just that.
As the global advocates for diabetes awareness, it is also our duty to dispel myths the masses have: that diabetes is not serious/just a touch of sugar. Hence this particular hardhitting message.
Living with diabetes is hard enough without the misconceptions and flat out falsities of 'popular wisdom.' This piece ads nothing positive to the dialog log but fuels the fires of misconception. How does this help anyone outside "the diabetes world?"
I see Bernard and SStrumello on the comments here and I know them to be two of the leading voices in the Diabetes Online Community. They and others there offer the constructive messages this bit lacks.

Disappointed in this selection for World Diabetes Day. Those who are pro-active in their blood sugar management don't need more ill-educated diabetes police sharing their "wisdom". This video does nothing to share more information rather it just perpetuates the fear. I'm sorry to be so negative I really am.
While I agree that many outside of the diabetes world have limited knowledge at best, much of the world already views diabetes from the perspective of worst-case scenarios, which is very negative. The IDF has a duty to change that perspective -- to demonstrate that people with diabetes can live happy, fulfilling lives in spite of diabetes if they take care of themselves. This video is such a disappointment.
@bernfarr Thanks for the feedback. This video is aimed at the general public/ those who don't know much about diabetes, to make them realize that it is serious if ignored/untreated. It's shocking how little people know about the condition outside the diabetes world.
It's part of a series of campaign videos, the rest of which will carry positive messages of getting active and taking control of diabetes. We also plan a special video for the type 1 community. Watch this space.
@WorldDiabetesDay Thanks for responding. Why not change the tagline to "UNTREATED diabetes can cost you a leg" or "Out of control diabetes can cost you a leg"? Because diabetes can be controlled without negative issues.
@bernfarr Point taken. In fact, that's exactly the message we want to push out for people with diabetes: that is can be controlled without negative issues. And that there is a support structure available - both online and offline - to help you deal with the condition.
We believe World Diabetes Day is also an excellent opportunity to spread the awareness message and reach out to the millions at risk of type 2 diabetes. Taking your point, we have now changed the title of the video.

Negative messages don't work as motivation. Drop this one from your repertoire.

Superb video, consistent with our (SALSA's) theme of "bipedalism is what makes us human. Bravo.
