I'm glad that while I never grew up in the era of this music, that I was still exposed to it throughout my childhood and that I've retained a great taste for this music.
I have to agree that Merle's style lends itself better to the lyrics of this song. However, the Everly Brothers did a fantastic, although 'upbeat' rendition.
they are on stage til now it´s crazy they never done anything else it was bad for me to read that don was using drugs a long time!!!!!! bad story!!!!!
@poisonfan86 It was sad to hear about Don's drug use but remember, many stars were given speed by the people who would profit from their performances, the more they appeared, the bigger the profit. Can't even imagine trying to perform night after night without getting tired. They had to sleep and wake on demand,,,, Not trying to make excuses for them but it is something to ponder....The Good thing is the end of the story concerning the drugs...He got help and beat the addiction.!
Beg to differ, but I saw the Everly Brothers perform at Sheppard AFB in 1976. They played a GREAT show for us and I wished my folks were there... They would've had a ball... So, apparently, they went "underground" touring for the military during that period... FYI
They preformed together all their lifes. When they were boys they had a small act on a radio show, with there family. In 1957 they got their hit Bye Bye Love and toured all over the world, with many hits to fallow. In 1973 they parted never speaking for ten years. But in Sept 1983 they got back together for their reunion at London's Royal Albert Hall. They toured again for a bit. Now retired Don is 72 and Phil is 70. But not to sure where they are now. Hope this helps and sorry about spelling.
When I was a kid, oh 40 years ago, my mama listened to (was obsessed with) the Everly Brothers. I've always loved this song, and Sing Me Back Home - both by the great Hag. I loved Merle before I even knew him! Both Hag and the Everly's are underappreciated. But I love 'em!
You can see how fast things changed. These guys went from the late 50's to the late 60's and early 70's still belting out their beautiful harmonies. Could any act today have the same staying power after bridging such a vast generational gap? I think not.
Yes, I miss the live Ed Sullivan version also. It's hard to rock out when made to sit on a funky platform thing, (and I think I hear a foot tapping) but still enjoy the video.
great clip ,I had no idea merle haggard did life without parole keefer .what happens when someone is too clean cut or doesnt feel the words to "happy birthday to you" do they get thrown out of the singing contest ?
Merle Haggard never did "life without parole" beatvampire. Not trying to be a jerk just saying. If he did life without parole he wouldn't have been able to write this song. He did do a large amount of hard time. Just never "life". And to Keeter, I think this is fine cover. I love Merle as well as The Everlys and can dig what your saying. To each his own...
FYI: the backing electric guitar is non other than The amazing CLARENCE WHITE!!! Yes, that Clarence White of the Kentucky Colonels and lead gutarist of the BYRDS. Notice the B-string bending at the end. He was quoted as "the Jimmi Hendrix of bluegrass guitarists and and the co-inventor of the legendary b-string bender with Gene Parsons. We miss you Clarence.

Listen. I love the Merle version too (who doesn't?), but the Everly's did a commendable, respectful and righteous cover of Mama Tried. End of story.

Somehow I'm not convinced their "mama's" had to try very hard to "raise them right".
They seem a tad bit clean cut to be "one and only rebel child[ren]". :)
