ive always loved this song and paul whiteman is my fave but never knew too much about bix, but knew he was in the whiteman orchestra for some time. is he the one who does the opening part? (after the voice of course)
This is a totally different take then the one I have! Mine is the one they used inthe movie "Paper Moon". I LOVE THIS SONG! COOL TO HEAR A DIFFERENT TAKE!
Un Pc Lyrics, but still fun. I got into trouble for playing Bix's Columbia version with the Rhythm boys singing the lyrics on my radio show on Jazz89 KUVO here in Denver.. A black listener called the boss and complained afterward and I got chewed out and a BIG NO! DO NOT PLAY! was written across this title on the Bix CD.

@stalzz That's pretty pathetic on the station management's part. Sounds as if the listener feels like a victim. Good thing we're completely enlightened today and can throw out all of the past.
@stalzz GOOD GREEF! Indeed people need to get a life! I`m so sick of this "PC" I can`t stand it! The next day You should have played "Pickaninny`s Heaven" by Kate Smith!!! I played it for a very good Black friend of mine, and He thought it was HILARIOUS!!! He went around all day singing it till it nearley drove me nuts. This music is a part of our history, I hope You still work at this station and play what the hell ever You please.

Good indeed, but I rather prefer Take one: Bix is there I think, much more spontaneous and free in his phrasing. I don't like the clarinet playing in neither take. It is a sorry thing that what we hear more of it than from Bix. Other, Take 1 is not sung, though it opens with the choir as in here (and in 2 the choir repeats its initial chorus inside the song, with a scat refrain by one singer, a funny one). Anyway, a nice recording.
Fantastic sound and great band.

Dynamic and energetic! There's nothing today that can match it.

@weightfeather1 These takes are the only ones that exist. The other takes were never issued and their metal stampers are lost.

Check out the version with Frankie Trumbauer and His Orchestra. Bix was in great shape when that one was recorded.
