I had tears welling in my eyes, but I was having my hair cut when the news came on the radio. How bizarre is that ? Then they played "Teenage Kicks". I later heard someone remark that John Peel was the only DJ alive who could get "Teenage Kicks" played on Radio 1, and he was the only DJ dead who could get "Teenage Kicks" played on Radio 1. That just summed it up for me.
@roddy76to86 thank roddy he will always be missed. When you hear the Djs that took his place they spoil it because there is too much trailors and phone type chatting through the show and i think they talk through the start and finish of songs. John Peel never did this. He came on an introduced the song and when it ended he gave the name of the song again and went straight into the next one. The mixes he did were interesting. THis song ICB is fantastic
I never listen to the radio now, a complete waste of ear effort.
Yes, john Peel always did that, play the song from the absolute start to the finish. Unless he was having one of his periodic crisis, which used to crack me up: "Just talk amongst yourselves for a while until I sort this out...". And at the time I mostly listened to him about 1980ish, the other DJ's were always livid because John Peel was the only Radio 1 show played in FM Stereo, Radio 2 having shut down at 10pm.
@roddy76to86 He used to make me laugh with some of his comments: One i liked that i had on tape was where he said "Hey what a great song, i don't mean "hey" in the sense of like DJs say hey what a really good song - but a good song"
Sounds typical ! There was never an episode when I didn't get at least one chuckle. And he'd occasionally go on a rant about something which was often hysterical. And I remember the great put down of Siouxsie Sioux in about 1981 when she was complaining about how awful the BBC recording studios were when they were recording a session. When John Peel was playing the session he remarked that he didn't remember her complaining back in 1977. I don't think they ever spoke again.
@roddy76to86 Although not the same as John Peel - I listen to a show on RTE Radio channel RTE RNaG The show is in Irish Gaelic It is on Monday to Friday on satellite channel 0166 between 23.00 to 01.00. He covers a lot of genres. He starts of with gentle music on Monday to progress to Techno and futuristic experimental music on Thursday and Friday. The Show is called "An Taobh Tuathail" The presenter is Cian O Ciobhain. He speaks in Irish Gaelic. I like the show
I don't have satellite TV...sounds interesting though.
But I'm in this 76-86 time warp when 90% of the best music was made. I do break out of it; I've got an upload by a crazy band "Hot Chip" from about 2006 amonst others. And a recent Madonna song "Jump" who I normally can't stand, but she's done a few good songs. But then this took her 30 years !
Incidentally John Peel played "Planet Earth" to show he wasn't against their music, but that they didn't need any help from him !
best thing as a young kid (12/13) was tuning in to john peel at night & worlds opened..............he broadened my horizon & made me cherrish music of every coloeur .cheers mate, sadly missed!
I agree that this is probably the better version, but I just listened to the track on the album while driving through LA last night, and it still sounded magnificent. Nevertheless, it looks like I'm in a minority on this one...
Well I remember John Peel being quite scathing about the drop in "quality", or whatever you want to call it , from the session versions to the LP versions. There were 4 songs on the session that went onto the LP. I think his main gripe was "over-production" if I remember rightly.
I have always thought that this is one of the greatest New Order songs: so strangely reminiscent of the JD past, and yet so positive and inventive at the same time
John Peel was the only DJ i liked : I actually cried when i heard the news of his passing

My second favorite off of Movement, behind Doubts Even Here.
Love this version and thanks for uploading!

The Hannett version sounds so weak compared to this . One of my all time favourites!!
teacupmad45 11 months ago
Well this version is vastly superior than the one on movement. Didnt expect the motorik beat to come in towards the end

Well this is dark and cool, but the LP version is still great, definitely one of my favorite New Order tracks.

>>You know, I think that may have been almost exactly what John Peel said some 27 years ago.
His exact words were: "It IS better than the LP."

guitar is great, but i miss the descending noise at the end, as on the studio version

suprisingly good, considering ICB is my least favorite track on Movement.
