  • Springsteen is a great songwriter !

  • My favourite of all Bruce's brilliant songs!

  • Once upon a time I felt like that. I came back to my small hometown from the big city where I am studying diplomacy. I'm someone who is foreign now. Someone better. Now they are asking for new stories and offering me beer in my favourite bar. I'm not a folk anymore. I'm a hero that I don't want to be.

  • GFY 57filter GFY

  • 57filter your as worthless as the hijackers that flew into the wtc...were you there when those towers fell? do you remember watching thousands of ppl die on your tv? what makes us Americans is the fact that when you mess with us, we'll bring the fight back ten times harder, SMD you towelhead lovin traitor

  • GFY 57 filter!

  • Bruce wrote this before 9/11.

  • it is a tradegy what happened and damn time goes fast it is so long ago that we barely even remember, and the biggest mistery is how did this happen to a nation which is all for peace and fair-ness in this world :)) and based on this incident u demolished 1 whole country :))) do american citizens really think that is the right way of doing it ????

  • What a discovery. This is in the same vein ad Sad Eyes - haunting, understated and utterly beautiful. What a great artist he is. Thanks Bruce

  • I just want something good to come from this.

  • One of the most underrated Bruce songs.

  • Today is a day to remember the victims of hate everywhere, in New York , London , Madrid , Mumbai , Bali , Oslo - the innocents who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan and the heroes who are fighting for liberty in Libya , Syria and across the middle east . And to remember the pain of those left behind . Religion may cause war , but it's politicians that fan the flames and ordinary men , women and children who pay the price . I too am the Nothing Man ....

  • What a powerful song. So much more poignant because of its subtlety and minimalism. Springsteen's such a gifted writer, and THE RISING will prove to be one of this most enduring works.

  • Dave Karnes and Sgt. Thomas come to mind when I hear this song. They saw and got news of the attacks and both donned thier Marine Fatigues and headed to ground zero to aid in recovery. Karnes was vocal about the movie WTC and Sgt. Thomas only came forward after the movie was released. Why because in their minds they were just doing their duty.

  • you want courage ... I'll show you courage you can't understand

  • @timkelly93 its can understand

  • great song

  • at theend all you had to say was "The Album"; given his rich musical history; The Rising is simply the best gift of music ever offered; it is an offering. Thanks for posting this video/interpretation. It'll be 10 years passed in 57 days.

  • GOD BLESS THE SEALS..5/1/11 JUSTICE SERVED.THOUGH THE PAIN REMAINS.

  • Oh my! I haven't heard this song in years! Used to be my favorite in my darker days... Damn

  • JUSTICE HAS BEEN DONE! God Bless USA!

  • @wizardsfan05 Not to rain on your parade but Osama bin Laden died in 2001! Do some real research as the OFFICIAL STORY is a lie from top to bottom as Pilots for 9/11 TRUTH and Architects and engineers for 9/11 TRUTH alone have proven it without a doubt in terms of THE HIJACKERS could not have flown the PLANES (1) and Fire can't bring down steel buildings (2)! That's just the beginning as we also no NO PLANE hit the PENTAGON if you check out the pentacon dot com! Thanks

  • @JohnNiemsMusic BBBWWWAAAHAHAHAHA! yea right.

  • @cubfever7 And your point is? Everything I said above is from factual research which can be found very easily and I suggest you do some instead of trying to be a wit of some kind! Witless is more like it.

  • "Pearl and silver, restin' on my night table"; lyrics that just break my heart!!!

  • Why can't people drop the cynicism, quit arguing for 5 minutes, and listen to a great song with real meaning. Stop turning everything into a religious/political argument, because that kind of crap is the reason war exists in the first place.

I think this song is about a selfless, anonymous hero who seeks no acclamation, yet laid his life on the line to help others like it was "nothing", and who continues to be haunted by his experience while the rest of the world moves on.

  • @erniebald57 Amen, thank you. This song is incredible.

  • I am interested by all the interpretations. To tell you the truth I always felt like this song was from the perspective of a suicide bomber. Someone who wanted to make an impact on the world the only way he knew how. Someone whose life was forever changed (by death). Someone who misses his loved one and wants to explain why he did what he did. Someone who knows that life goes on just as it did before. Someone who has demonstrated courage (from his perspective). Someone who has committed suicide.

  • Almost ten years ago... wow

  • I love Bruce but his political views Suck he is a Osama Obama worshiper and thats bad.

  • @TheRedemtion your so right! Bruce is only using this tragedy for selfish gain..

  • @ikemen1 Do you even know who Bruce Springsteen is? It's terrible what happens to the moslems, and I'm all for the Mosque, but Bruce Springsteen is the greatest artist of all time, and to even IMPLY that he made this song (or this album) just to make a buck is an insult not just to him, but to America. Was he selfish when he recorded "Devils and Dust" protesting our going into Iraq?

  • @ikemen1 would you like him to say nothing?

  • @ikemen1 You don't know Bruce. He was in Jersey when it happened. He saw it, and he still sees the empty sky. Go complain on an Alan Jackson video. You know him? He's the idiot that can't tell the difference between Iraq and Iran.

  • One of the great unknown Springsteen songs.

  • fuck 9/11 but springsteen for life

  • This song is about a 9/11 firefighter suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. "With this kiss" is a reference to the kiss of death from the pearl and silver pistol on his night stand. It is about his depression and thoughts of suicide. How can the rest of us understand? Beautifully written lyrics.

  • fantasic photo's. Never forget,never forget.

  • i love this song and love bruce springsteen!!!

  • love it! brilliant is just not a good enough word for this. The Boss. thanks for posting. very nice.

  • "You want courage? I'll show you courage you can't understand."

    love that line..

  • This song is about a man who has lost his wife, and how it has left him lost and wondering for the rest of his life. Just thinking of her over and over. Bruce you are The Boss. 10/10

  • @badboyburton360 No its not

  • @sunsprie the fact that the pearl and sliver resting on his night table is a reverance to a wedding anniversery. What else could the song be about?

  • great song

  • 11/09

All You bad people -> we will never forgive You !

  • elvis was the king of rock until Bruce Springsteen was born

  • Hey Bruce...Thank you...for all the years, thoughts, angst, and release of our inner demons...Sorry about your cousin in KC...the only time I've ever had tickets to see your show...God Speed to him...C-ya soon I hope...

  • They say it's too traumatic for our children to see the towers and that we need to forget about that day but I say remind your children because "Those

who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

  • Fucking George W. Bush and american banks, the real authors of this terrorist act (false flag).

  • @ markieju ... listen to your old man, he is a wise man with a very good taste in music

  • Yes! :)

  • spelt photo wrong in credits but still a brilliant film

  • Its only the Boss who can put so much passion in simple words and the lyrical quality that comes out is just unbelievable. No flowery language - just simple blue collar words but arranged and sung so beautifully that he deserves the Nobel prize for Music - if it was there. One would be searching for how to express your feelings - just listen to Springsteen songs - its all there - love, loneliness, loss, desire, respect, God, lust, hurt, pain, victory, optimism, redemption. He is really the Boss!

  • screw the politics..all i know is that this song along with you're missing , the rising , my city of ruins , lonesome day are one of the the finest peices of music one can ever dream of listening to...there's a reason why he's called the boss!!

  • one of his best songs.

  • This song symbolizes what our men and women went through on black saturday in oz and hopefully don't have to face this year

  • True, but i mainly symbolizes a fireman. who survived going through the building.

People called him a hero, he didnt agree.

Other people died to save other at 9/11.

Those where hero's he said, I am the nothing man.

at least thats what my dad (huge bruce springsteen fan)told me

    amazing song!

  • @markieju I totally agree with but I also can envision this song being sung about any firefighther who had a brother or sister die in the line of duty while selflessly risking their own life to save someone else.

  • @resoonder1 True, its amazing how bruce can hear something bad happend, and then immediatly write a song about it.

  • @markieju That is true however I read somewhere the he suposably wrote this song back in 1994 This is a great song either way wethere or not it was written pre or post 9/11

  • @markieju Brought to you by the nation of Islam let them build their house of evil somewhere else !

  • @TheRedemtion what do you mean?

There is nothing wrong with islam

(only the muslims who commit crimes for their "religious goals")

there is nothing wrong with catholics

(only the ones who abuse children)

there is nothing wrong with non religious people

(only the ones who keep bashing on other religions)

get what im saying? in every little subject you can devide people in, you'll find some people who are just WRONG. this has nothing to do with the "group"of people you're talking about.

  • @markieju What i mean is show me one thing that the nation of Islam has brought to the world one thing ? ithas everything to do with a group of evil doers that claim they are good when the majority of them want non muslims dead and look at anyone that is not of the muslim faith an infidel and they treat their woman like dirt even Ali was betrayed by them. Keep reading and keep watching what they do, sorry i do not agree.

  • @TheRedemtion then again Not every muslim treats their woman like dirt.

and why should they have to bring the world something? That's ridiculous. like catholics have brought ME anything!! but im ok with that! i just let them believe what they believe in.(not religious btw)

I dont like the treading wifes bad thing either. FUCK those who hit women or do other things like that. i dont feel comfortable with most of their habits either. but its THEIR CULTURE and calling them evil goes to far man

  • @TheRedemtion Islam has done a lot for astrology and has helped millions of people personally. The extremists are horrible... completely horrible. But Frankly the Far right Christians in our country are too simply horrible. They threaten us every election year by sending more war hungry idiots and incompetent politicians to the podium. They beat up cab drivers, steal people's money for god,and though their book preaches love, they spend all their time hating those who disagree. Extremists suck.

  • @markieju the song was written in 1994

  • @zoroarkissueregion .... no it was not...

  • @markieju This song was written way before 9/11, but it's on the album because it fits perfectly..,

  • @tonelill get a clue, chump

  • One of his best, underated song!

  • @B0zz3 I totally agree with you because for me this is Bruce's best song of all his brilliant songs and I speak as a singer-songwriter myself!!

  • Very well done ... Thank you for the video and thank you Bruce for the song.

I was in Manhattan on Sept.11, 2001 and will never forget that sad day.: (

  • I got no problem with that... even tough it's not true.

  • So very, very sad..........

  • yet touching

  • Great Song , Bruce can make me cry

    :D

  • Great song, well done with the video!

  • nice video nice song :)

  • May God bless every single victim of 09/11 irrespective of race relegion or colour, and enshrine those who instigated this evil, cowardly act to hell for evermore.

  • very very good !!!

  • Never seen that before-was there NYPD,sitting here completely blown away---GOD BLESS AMERICA---Thanks Bruce...

  • I am not a terrorist but as consumers we are collectively

Defamation of character together we stand strong and let it be

Remember how we bought, taught us how to forget

But what you people don't know is that America did it

  • no they didn't u fucking moron, last time i checked American's did not hijack the plane, american's did not kill some of the cabin crew and american's did not purposely drive the plane into the trade centers......you can try and sound like some theologian on you tube all you want but how bout you stop trying to be so politically correct

  • These images never cease to shock.

  • great song

its good that our troops are back, but many are still in AFG :(

i hope that this nonsense "war on terror" will end

  • Still one of the most haunting songs from Bruce and so appropriate today.

  • its nice dat people can interpret songs in der own way. but i'm pretty sure bruce wrote dis song before 9/11. wasn't dis song about a soldier who lost his "private parts", in de first gulf war?

  • "An Eye for an Eye will make us all blind one day." Is a quote by Gandhi

  • As the great man Nelson Mandella, said once.

A EYE FOR EYE WILL MAKE US ALL BLIND ONE DAY.

Very wise words, great pity that we don't listen to wise old men

  • Why do we have wars and why do we have so much cups about which nationality is better?! We are all humans... we just live on other places and have other ways of living.. and speak other languages but why do we kill us together or insult us or kidd us i dont understand...

  • I´m moved. Great song. Music can alter the world...Hope to all of you in YouTubeLand!

  • I can't believe this song isn't about 9/11. It was penned for a unrelased 1994 album.

  • it was going to be Called either Blood Brothers, or waiting on the end of the world0

  • It never got released because Jon Landau if that's the right spelling after so many Budweisers on this Saturday evening said that the album wasn't fit for public consumption.

  • sound about right.

  • It would be intersting to hear the 1994 version if it does exsist.

  • Bootlegs my friend Bootlegs....

  • come on up for the riiiiisiiiing...

come on up lay your haaaaaands in miine..

  • If this get you misty eyed, you might want to check for a pulse.

  • Bruce Springsteen, The Boss, the most hard working man in the history of music... The greatest storyteller of all time!

This man just reached my heart, and made the world stop for a minute.

    Bruce!

  • i agree ;)

  • i don't know about history. what about all that time between tunnel of love and human touch/lucky town lol, that was a lot of time off.

  • get your fucking balls out and throw your evil ex regime bahind bars.

  • rest in peace to the people who dead in the 11s from Spain

    :)

  • just doesnt seem like something we would do to ourselves. great video. God Bless America. We need all the flags back on our cars as we did after it happened.

  • bruce <3

  • horribly sad :"( very beautiful

  • Remember how profoundly American we all felt after 9/11... we need to get back to that a bit. We lost our way some how in the past 8 years.

    beautifull video

  • God fucking perfect pictures dude, u know how to make a movie that makes u cry

  • sweet

  • fuck what a song! get in there brucie.

  • This actually made me cry.

    God bless America.

  • One of the deepest lyrics of songwriting i have ever witnessed /heard... A absolute masterpiece

  • Actually i beleive this video is trying to show guilt of the survivors which not truly what the song is about. The song is about the firemen that never were near the Twin Towers when they fell, that never risked there lives and still were treated by people like hereos. They felt they didnt deserve it and these firemen soon became so overflowed with guilt that they called themselves "Nothing men" or when it was just one "Nothing man" hence the name of the song.

  • They were near the towers, and they helped people, but they were "nothing men" because they didnt want to be hero's for doing their duty as firemen and as humans. Pearl and Silver resting on my night table; they cant live with all of the attention and glamour that they think they didnt deserve. Guess what pearl and silver is.

  • Nicely said, guy. Good job.

  • u know wat? thats a really nice way of putting it! :)

  • very true. one of the workers my dad represented was an emt who now has to take a whole slew of medications. I asked if he ever thought if it was worth it. He told me, he would do it again in a heart beat, because it's his job.

God bless those that think that way.

  • May love and compassion heal the afflicted, and common sense teach humanity , that war makes us RAW............may god bless the peace makers.........5/5

  • it goes to show that not only "joe public" and the military can make heroes the NYDF made heroes that day like no one else has or hopefully ever will, i say fair play to them and god bless those who never came home i salute you all!!

  • i meant NYFD ;)

  • Is this song about survivors guilt?

  • yes

  • So for once you tasted the bitterness of the world that you created. You are more entitled to suffer. Your suffering is more important. Your suffering makes the world halt on her axis.

Listen to the song, and I think she will present you with questions you cannot understand

  • I love this song. The Boss, at his very best. But I hear something universal in this.

  • The Boss, The Bruce, The Springsteen!

Can you get it better then this?

  • Darlin' give me your kiss, come and take my hand...

  • An amazing song by a genius - never fails to hit my emotion

  • what can i say...the song is beautifull...the photographs also, taken after such a dramatic event...i hope in the future, and in the pesent tense people will use common sense instead of voilence to express their believes...

  • difficult to describe such a great song=)

  • incredible

  • The quality of a song and its composer stays not in the number of views. Especially when we talk about the Boss. He is above the mood of the mob. And may God keep him so up to the very end.

  • @quetzalquatl2008 well said.

  • 12 thousand views for one of the best songs ever written.....sac-religious

  • The men who fought that calamity are the boldest damn firefighters I've ever seen.

  • I'm pretty sure this song is about a guy committing suicide.

  • No about a 9/11 Survivor.

  • Survivor's guilt (I'd humbly suggest).

  • this slideshow really does reinforce why america is fighting in iraq and afghanistan. im not even american but just for a minute imagine that horror of this magnitude happened in your home country. would you be willing to stand by and go 'oh well, shit happens'? i would'nt. i would'nt rest until i'd hurt whoever done this. ask yourself that question people.

  • widowman is just a nickname for xboxlive. most of your reply was fine because everyone is entitled to an opinion but you fell once you said i was 'fucking retarded', so that just makes you a keyboard warrior like some stupid 15 year old and your opinion loses all respect because of that. learn to debate without trying to insult people who you don't even know or have done nothing to you and maybe more people will listen to you. It's called being mature.

  • fine old man fine, whatever you say, you win the BIG DEBATE, which in reality isn't a debate at all, its FACT vs FICTION

and what i wouldnt give to be 15 again hah

  • your actually older than me but ok....and no one wins a debate, its just a tool to open other peoples eyes to broader opinions than that of just your own. i took in what you said and don't necessarily disagree with your point of view so lets leave things at that.

  • Why don't you tell that to all the British young men who are dying in Afghanistan by the week? Or better yet, why don't you sign up if your beliefs are that strong. Bruce's music has never been about a call to arms.

  • your right, The Boss's music never has been a call to arms, i just commented on the slideshow, and i would have said the same even if it was an s-club seven track playing in the background. Britains involvement in afghanistan is just an infortunate drawback of being America's closest ally. The troops being killed know what being in the armed forces meant and they rose to that reponsibility and died doing their job. They had no illusions and that's what commands my respect for both british and US

  • That's a fair comment about the armed forces knowning what they are signing up for bud but the British soldgiers dying in Afghanistan are just kids. There is no progress being made, there is no end in sight. Lonesome Day sums up the US respond to 9/11 perfectily. When he sings 'Better ask questions before you shoot', he is channeling the thoughts of all decent Americans, those whom knew that retaliation was neccesary but there would be consequences for the entire world.

  • What you've said could'nt be more true. Someone once said that 'Old men start wars but young men finish them'. It's an unfortunate fact of life that in any war, it's our youth that pay with blood. Any war, no matter how just, is a terrible waste of life is'nt it? Thanks for the feedback :)

  • It is, they seem to be dying by the day and nothing is changing for the Afghan people. It's not on the same scale of course but in World War One, a whole generation of young British men were wiped out, men whom had children and wives and it's the same in Afghanstain. Magnifcent song though and I find it hard to believe it isn't about 9/11, the lyrics, the emotions are synonymous with what happened that day. Thanks for the feedback also!

  • i ever here there are dying british and american people german peopel die even as the british and american even if they are from a land wich does bad,and even if you all hate them... they dont did anything bad in their live...

RIP to all people who died in war no matter what nationaity,i hope sometimes people just get it and stop all wars....

  • We don't hate America, we just wish they hadn't got us involved in two wars that can not be won. Your right, the American kids are dying to, it's just that there have been alot of British boys killed recentily and their just doesn't seem to be anything changing in the region.

  • I love Springsteen.. but let it fall with the artyr schtick. Te impact has basically been suffered manyfold in people abroad who have nothing to do with your hoagy philosophies

  • What?

  • Thank You Fisher. Thank You USA Military. Thanks.

We were all there. WE LOVE NY ! See my favorites

    for truth-experts-real ISLAM truths. Ugly-Truth

  • i am an american soldier. this is what i fight for

  • You fight for Bush and his own wants

over 4000 of your fellow men killed for what? you dont even know anymore Jarhead, because if you knew the truth you wouldnt have signed up

  • Unbelievable slide show. Great work. He did this song live in March 2003 in Rochester, NY. There is a video of it here that someone posted. My favorite tune off this album.

  • Bruce has the unique talent of telling a story that touches many people. This song is one of those kind of songs. It perfectly matches the images in the video.

    Another Philadelphia for sure.

    GREAT song.
