It IS real and it IS a GLITCH.

How it works is that when you leave the car, on the hosts screen you will get stuck behind the car and unable to move, while on your screen (non-host) you will be on top of it and DUMMIED; Now you have to get "loose", that's done by crouching and standing up and jumping, once you have done that, every time you jump you will go slightly up so if you tap it fast you will go upwards, as your real body is still stuck down behind the car on other people's screen.

Borderlands uses the Unreal Engine so ehm, your theory would be quite impossible.

There isn't any real elevator glitches in the game, this glitch works the way that you get dummied and stuck behind / halfway under the car, and then to losen yourself you crouch and uncrouch, every time you press A it makes you go higher.
