I think this scene shows one of the reasons I love Vicki. Sure, she may not be larger than life, but she's brave, caring, intelligent....and anyone who can convince the First Doctor - who is, as Ian says here, as stubborn as a mule - of anything this serious, when he has clearly made up his mind...that person deserves some serious credit. Not to mention, the two of them were such kindred souls. They were both so adventurous, as we see in the Romans when they both get irritable with staying idle.
Y'know, the ol'fella seems to have mellowed a bit over the years. He's gotten a lot younger,he's even had girlfriend or two. The years have indeed really been good to him.
@tic07096903 Because the dalek time machine had a positive effect on them presumably, you'd be referring to Sarah Janes reference to them in the SJ adventures I take it.
Nice of them to blow up that bloke's garage! How did Ian know someone hadn't just walked in with a mug of tea, or back from the loo? Not very satisfying solution. An enjoyable story, but it doesn't take a fantastic imagination to come up with the Doctor setting the controls so that the Dalek time-ship drops Ian and Barbara off then takes off again on auto-pilot and blows up in space, or something. Anything but blowing up some innocent person's property and endangering lives in the vicinity.
It was immediately after Ian and Barbara's departure that the Doctor and Vicky found a passenger in the Tardis. It was Stephen who they met during this story, AKA Peter Purvis from Blue Peter. He had smuggled himself aboard and he became another companion of the Doctor.
love that photo montage at the end. The first doctor's memory is funny. they didn't exactly thrust themsleves into the ship he kind of kidnapped them.
Ian and Barbara are the most underrated companions, as they were 2 of the best in the whole history of DW, but usually they are forgotten by everyone. And not only their characters were awesome (specially Barbara!), but the actors were extremely good, and their acting techniques were ahead their time, very natural (specially for that time on TV).
Also, I love their ending, probably the most cheerful and positive in the history of Who. And I love seeing Grumpy!Doctor because he's missing them :)
@danacartersgx I agree, I enjoyed Ian and Barbara and let's not forget like William was the first doc they were the first companions, people will talk about how all the women in the old series were wimps and damsels in distress but Barbara was more than a positive role model for young girls. She was smart attractive and didnt just scream at everythign. She did get scared but she wasnt a wilting flower.
Is this due to come out on DVD anytime soon? PLEASE tell me it is. Through rediscovering the series when it came back in 2005 I've become rather obsessed with the early Who, pity the BBC wiped so much of the Hartnell/Troughton eras....
@ladycplum It actually came out on DVD (with the Space Museum) in the UK last month, and is scheduled to be released in the US (without the Beatles sequence :() in July. I'm not sure if a release date has been announced for Australia.
@noisyheart That footage wouldn't even exist now at the BBC if it hadn't been used in the show. The Beatles have always caused problems whenever they showed up on Doctor Who. Back in the 90s they had to cut part of the audio in The Evil of the Daleks for the same reason. Apple Music is so lame; they love to cause endless headaches over their precious rights to the Beatles catalog. I wish the production staff had used the Rolling Stones instead.
@ladycplum I'm not sure if this is on DVD, but I have managed to watch and enjoy all of this series on Youtube. If you haven't already seen it and you might consider watching it on here, then make yourself comfortable because it's rather a long story, but a good one :-)
Thematically Ian and Barbara are still the most important companions in DW history as their influence transformed the Doctor into the hero we're all familiar with.
I love the William Hartnell era of Doctor Who-and The Chase is a great story. William Harnell is a wonderful actor-he may fluff his lines from time to time-but a great actor
Thanks you sooooo much for uploading. I really love Barbara/Ian, and I was so sad when another copy of this got removed. You, noisyheart, are a lifesaver!!!!
I am glad i got to see some of the William Hatnell stories of Doctor Who, this story entitled "The Chase" is a great one but sad to see Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright leave. The Doctor, though not too happy when Ian and Barbara barged into the Tardis in the first place developed a friendship with them. Love the scene when the Doctor and Vicki saw that Ian and Barbara got home alright on that time TV, the Doctor showed sadness that they are not with him anymore, he will miss them very much.

Ian & Barbara were the best. As for William fluffing his lines well, I think it just adds to the character. It doesn't bother me at all :)

LOL just noticed that William Hartnell said:
"you will end up as a couple of burnt cinders flying around in Spain...erm, in space!"
He was always fluffing his lines :)

@pufferfishish William Hartnell was notorious for tripping up and because they didnt have the money to edit back then theyre all in here lol
bluejeckett 9 months ago
@bluejeckett They didn't really have the time, either, since they were doing more than 40 episodes a year.

@BlackMonk66 True enough I guess

@pufferfishish Another reason he screwed up his lines is that there was no editing back then. Susan mucked up her lines occasionally too.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Chesterton, your Dalek voice is worse than Royce Mills and Michael Wisher put together. Go to the back of the class!
I am still trying to work out if Barbara might have been attractive if she hadn't had such an awful hairstyle.
First time I saw this wonderful story was at the BFI in the 1980s on the big screen.

Well, to be honest..the very 1st Doctor Who stories that I ever watched were The Chase and The Rememberance of the Daleks
I can still remember watching this story (on video) when i was 3 years old

Such a great Dalek impersonation, that I HATED it at first - as I do all of those annoying Doctor Who Dalek voices!
My fave Dr Who is Tom Baker, but this is also very well-written,planned & acted by all.
Thanks for posting!
