I read past sins and its the best book I've ever read it actually made me cry 4 times like not just tears like I actually sat there and cried for a minute
DONE... FINALLY!!!, thought it was great. didn't like it as much as "My Little Dashie", but that's just because i like how MLD is just a short story. It's a weak complaint, but "Past Sins" does take a long time to finish. For a fanfiction based on a little girl cartoon show, it's still pretty damn good. But in my opinion MLD is still #1.
@Cthulhuandyou neither do I, hell, I could probably right the entire story in the omments (minus a few details and specific fraizes) but that dosn't mean it can't be re-read, entill one of my other fan fics update (irreplaceable or a world without rainbows) or find another fanfic to read (which is what im trying to do) i read this bloody book every week
This is just amazing. The initial part made me literally shiver to how well you captured and represented the overall feel of the plot, and the CMC part just kept me smiling like an idiot.
I do think, though, that you could've put a bit more of an oomph in the final section, maybe make it sound a bit more orchaestrated. Didn't really like the use of synth sounds for that, not for this part of the story anyway.
In any case, this is a true masterpiece, and definitely does justice to the story.

I know it has its flaws, but why do people always have to see the bad in everything? I don't get why this fanfic is so hated, by creating a hatedom for this fic you're just reflecting what happened to the show itself, which has also attracted a rather large hatedom, even though there are still a lot more fans than haters. This fanfic is not that bad, but I also enjoy the Inheritance Cycle, which has a much greater Mary Sue than Past Sins. Well, I just have difficulty hating something that has my favorite character in it (Twilight Sparkle). Hate it if you want, I don't.

There should be a WHOLE season telling the story of Past Sin. Each episode would be a chapter long. From Chapter 0 - 21. Of course there would be 21 episodes. In my opinion, I think that would be better than making Past Sins a movie.
What I kinda want is a serious movie about the rise and fall of the old lunar republic. I know, a serious movie about global civil world war of ponies, but thats why I see it being seriously produced by hollywood like 10-15 years from now. But I hope its like a dramatic war movie in the style of enemy at the gates with some light humor and witty cliches at points. And dog fights between pegasi and like Luna and Celestia taking out entire squadrons or devastating ground troops.
I enjoyed Nyx. The fact that she was the new Incarnation of Nightmare Moon made the whole story interesting. If you're a true Brony, Then this is a Must-Read. Best Fanfic I've ever had the pleasure reading.
@EmpyreanDeity You should read the sequal/spin-off/crossover Fandom Crisis. Pen Stroke, the author of Past Sins, is helping the guy writing it, and it's really interesting so far. Hell, it's one of the reasons I started watching Doctor Who.

I would like to think that someday maybe when the show finally comes to a close, (may that never happen) that the animators as one last tip of the hat to Pen Stroke and this amazing fandom would bring this story into cartoon form. It would be the most amazing thing they could give to us (besides another season :P) and I'm sure most of us would give a hell of lot to see this amazing story get the recognition it deserves.
@Robman2277 Considering how long it takes to make a single 22-minute episode, I highly doubt they'd make a 500-page story into a cartoon. It'd be at least 10 episodes or so, unless they cut out a LOT of content (which happens quite often with book movies and such).
I know, it would take a lot of effort and I doubt they would make a new series for a demographic that the show wasn't even intended for in the first place. But all the same, it would be pretty damn awesome.
@Gotmilk0112 The atmosphere, the idea of citizens of Ponyville still fearing the return of Nightmare Moon, Twilight doing all she could to make the ponies like Luna, like how she wanted to do with Nyx, amoth other things. Plus, I think I even noticed some musical cues lifted straight from this piece, but that may have just been me.

I had heard quite a bit about the MLP madness sweeping the world. Got a little into it when discord came in to the picture. When i was on Memebase i came across the poster "Past Sins" for a movie that some people wanted made of the fan fic. Did not really think of it at first but decided to read it...oh my Princess (yes i just did). This was a story completely laid out beyond a measure few people can do off of a kids show! Truly amazing, gives me faith in humanity.

I can't help but think that given the personalities of the two sisters and the mitigating factors around Nyx's crime there was never any real threat of banishment (though lesser punishments were a possibility). Sure, it added some post-climax tension, but I also found it annoying because it went against the established personalities slightly, which prodded at my immersion. That's the only real issue I had with the plot, the rest was very well written. One of the few fanfics I actually enjoyed.
I liked Past Sins as much as any other Brony, but I don't see exactly what made it so special. Would somepony care to elaborate? I'm not saying it was bad, or even not good, there's just A LOT of good MLP fanfiction and I'm interested in seeing what garnered this particular one such a large following.

I found myself actually immersed in the story so much that I got nervous when I though something bad was about to happen as I was reading it. If the story had that same effect on other readers, then I can see why it's popular.

for the first two months of being a brony i help myself away from fanfics then, when i read this, i gave in and read 10 in 2 weeks, my personall best time for reading all of past sins is 20 hours non-stop reading, i curently read past sins every 1-2 weeks, i am a slave to penstroke!
@kodeake i've been a brony for like, 4 months now, and i still haven't given in. but i've heard a LOT of good thigns about this one, so i guess i'll cave and read it, i'm sure i'll love it. as per my personality, i'll probably go nuts over fanfics for a while, and, like you, read a bunch over a really short period of time XD

just finished chapter 10 myself and I hate those little cretins Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon soooooo much right now. The fires of hell hath no fury like the kind I hope gets unleashed upon them!
There must be so many people (myself included) who would love to see a full length film of this fanfic, animated in the normal FiM style with all the right voice actors.
@lankygit101 Yeah, that's I was thinking. I'm also thinking Andrea Libman, who voices Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie, could voice Nyx, and Nightmare Moon's normal voice actor could take that part.
I love the "opening" (< 10sec) with its good transition into the cult scene. The transition to the royal guard could be better - building up more tension before it for example. I like how you transitioned out of it, though. All in all I quite enjoy the first 2-3 minutes for the atmosphere you transmit.
The kazoo and CMC theme made me laugh :D
Technically I wished the sound quality (aah, trumpets!) and the numbers of "layers" (of instruments/tunes) was higher - well.. I'm a soundtrack fan^^'

I would like to think that someday maybe when the show finally comes to a close, (may that never happen) that the animators as one last tip of the hat to Pen Stroke and this amazing fandom would bring this story into cartoon form. It would be the most amazing thing they could give to us (besides another season :P) and I'm sure most of us would give a hell of lot to see this amazing story get the recognition it deserves.

@Robman2277 Considering how long it takes to make a single 22-minute episode, I highly doubt they'd make a 500-page story into a cartoon. It'd be at least 10 episodes or so, unless they cut out a LOT of content (which happens quite often with book movies and such).

Plus, I think I even noticed some musical cues lifted straight from this piece, but that may have just been me.

I had heard quite a bit about the MLP madness sweeping the world. Got a little into it when discord came in to the picture. When i was on Memebase i came across the poster "Past Sins" for a movie that some people wanted made of the fan fic. Did not really think of it at first but decided to read it...oh my Princess (yes i just did). This was a story completely laid out beyond a measure few people can do off of a kids show! Truly amazing, gives me faith in humanity.

I can't help but think that given the personalities of the two sisters and the mitigating factors around Nyx's crime there was never any real threat of banishment (though lesser punishments were a possibility). Sure, it added some post-climax tension, but I also found it annoying because it went against the established personalities slightly, which prodded at my immersion. That's the only real issue I had with the plot, the rest was very well written. One of the few fanfics I actually enjoyed.

I liked Past Sins as much as any other Brony, but I don't see exactly what made it so special. Would somepony care to elaborate? I found myself actually immersed in the story so much that I got nervous when I though something bad was about to happen as I was reading it. If the story had that same effect on other readers, then I can see why it's popular.

It triggered my immersion very neatly, I could see the scenes playing out as easily as if I was watching TV in my mind, something which rarely happens with fanfics. The story amazingly had a happy ending, one that couldn't even be called bittersweet given the alternative. I found myself very satisfied with it and read the whole lot in about 5 hours.

I think the story's plot line is represents Nyx's feelings well.
She had a good life, only to have it ripped away in chapter 10. The change affects Nyx as well as the reader in similar ways.

I love the "opening" (< 10sec) with its good transition into the cult scene. The transition to the royal guard could be better - building up more tension before it for example. I like how you transitioned out of it, though. All in all I quite enjoy the first 2-3 minutes for the atmosphere you transmit.
The kazoo and CMC theme made me laugh :D
Technically I wished the sound quality (aah, trumpets!) and the numbers of "layers" (of instruments/tunes) was higher - well.. I'm a soundtrack fan^^'
