Guys, you actually have to play the song using the open strings to do it properly. He's not faking it. You can even hear his guitar against thin lizzys, in the riff at least

both of them covered this. the original song was by an Irish folk band. Then Thin Lizzy covered it using lots of changes. And Metallica basically covered "Thin Lizzy's" version.
