"Yuna's technique is pure and she moves beautifully on the ice. She is a joy to watch. In my opinion she was by far the best skater that night. Still, her marks in the components did not reflect this. Her total score was 58.56, just 0.4 ahead of Kostner and almost 1.03 less than Asada. Had she been marked correctly, although she was only fifth in the short program, Yuna might have won the World title 2008."
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
"that (program) had everything" "delivered quality jumps" - And what are commentators saying about Asada now? She doesn't feel music, her jumps aren't good quality. programs are only about jumps etc. Can anyone tell me what has changed since 2008? Her choreography are better, spins and steps too, so tell me- why suddenly almost every commentator says she's worse than Yuna, even though Yuna didn't changed elements in her FS since her senior debut?
i was in gothenburg, watching this live. i will never forget it. even though that fall on the axel, she made such a strong impression on me with her grace and musicality. since i saw this, i have always cheered for her, despite i know that mao is faaar behind yu-na. mao is still my favourite skater. <3
@OliviaDoDance I don't think Mao's behind Kim at all. I do not think so called judges' sometimes manipulated and sometimes outrageous scores tells skaters' exact abilities. Lysacek is a better skater right now than Plushybecause the juges gave him the gold over Plushy? Mao is the only lady who can do both 3-3 and 3A at the competition. It's Mao who is in the league of her own in my opinion and Mao should've won 2008 worlds in a landslide.
@senarice she got a 132... just shy of the world record during that time. she fell on her first jump, failing her first jumping pass and did not get any credit for the jump as well. she also lost about 15-20 seconds of skating time. despite that, her skate was phenomenal but there is no way in hell she should have gotten higher than a 132. i think she should have gotten at least 5 points less. but mao still did deserve that gold medal! i just think you are giving her to much credit.
This is one of Mao's better programs. Too bad she couldn't win any of her world championships with a perfect program. But now with the changed rules tailored to fit her skills, maybe she will win again someday.
@pflover1 that is not quite true even so she made a mistake by falling in 2008 she still won the world championship. but in 2010 she won the world championships with a clean program...
This Jap girl won the championship 2008 only by 2 points ahead of Yuna with big support of some(?) judges who gave Mao Asada plus points for her messed up jumps.
You can check the detailed results in ISU homepage.
i remember that i almost had a heart attack when she slipped. boy oh boy what a comeback! so true, this prog has everything and more... shes so deserved the 1st place!
The reason she fell when going for triple axel is that she used her edge and slipped. If you are doing it right, she shouldn't have to use her edge to jump. Obviously, she was already spinning even before she was up in the air. That's why she slipped.
@jkim76 Unfortunately, only a handful in the world, men or women, can do it right. That's what most of the skaters do before a 3A. A pre-rotation even occurs in almost every male figure skater's 3A. Midori Ito pre rotates as well in her gigantic 3A.Her 3A is still good, compared to most of the other's.
This is just incredible..that fall...that horrible slide across the ice and this young lady goes on to skate an awesome program...didn't even rattle her. This is one beautiful program and a lovey young skater. I hope she and Yuna face off at the Olympics..no matter the outcome it will be well worth watching these two graceful and athletic skaters. WOW! Amazing and something to be proud of:) I am awestruck at the composure she shows here!
You are correct, but it seems that Sonia Bianchetti is very biased and supportive of Yu-Na Kim. Yes Yu-Na did receive low PCS and technical merit marks but it was because she was skating too cautiously. It looked like she was tired. But I agree that Yu-Na has a wonderful flow across the ice and that she slices the ice like butter. However, many other commentators agree that Mao deserved to win last year (watch different videos here on Youtube).
No, in fact everyone knows that she deserved to win. It's only you and your pathetic friends who thiks differently. The fact that she fell like that in the BEGINNING her program and finished the rest of her program cleanly supports the fact that she did deserve to win the title and not crack under pressure like the other skaters. Wow that fall on her tripple axle was huge but the way she got up and finished her program was absolutely amazing and also gr8 sk8 in 2009 well done mao :)

i don't think sasha will come back on olympic...but i hope she'll come back.
she good, but i dunno what's gonna happen to her at the olympic in 2010, cuz michelle kwan, sasha cohen and irina slutskya r coming bak for 2010 olympics in vancouver!!
@HelTra91 yeah I totally agree on that mao is a top skater that can't be compared to someone as sasha or irena..... it's a crime to even mention mao in the same entence as sasha or irena...
I don't think Kwan is coming back because so far, I haven't seen any recent videos of her skating. So I am still looking. My heart is firmly set on seeing Sasha return to competition.
I am banking on a bet that Sasha will definitely come back since I saw more videos of her growing experience and also of her improvements and I am very enthusiastic for her to make her attempt to get the Gold medal she rightfully deservesd. Also the other truth is that I am getting tired of seeing a new phenomenon in form of the Fan Wars... the Asada fans vs the Kim fans. Anyway, peace!
i recently read an article about irina slutskaya, n she not coming bak for sure, so tat confirms irina, michelle kwan, her news r still unknown, but Kwan told the Associated Press in October 2007 that she would decide in 2009 if she plans to compete in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, n to where i pulled these news, it's called researchin on google, u should try it urself!!
I know you like yuna kim. But don't bash other skaters. Yuna and Mao are good friends, and both of them are very graceful Asian women. I like them so much.
In the old scoring system, yes, it may not have been worthy of gold possibly, but in this new (confusing) system you rack up points for what you DO do. So it is possible to cram in the points with footwork/edging or high grades of execution, or by simply adding in more jumps if possible. Seems like the same thing happened with Joubert/Buttle. I enjoyed Joubert's skating more, but Buttle knew how to maximize the points.
If you tried to understand the judging system, it wouldn't be confusing. Skaters were also judged in the old system based on what they did do. Joubert won the second mark so I don't understand what you're trying to say. He might have landed a quad, but had two less triples than Buttle.
There was no choreo after that jump anyway, you visually challenged excuse for a figure skating fan. Her 1st element was 3-3, which she nailed. That fall cost her nearly 10 points. Hardly her fault that skaters below her had their share of falls, stumbles, pops and UR calls.
Where did you get Mao's 10 point deduction? Base value of 3A is 7.5. And Mao's 3A usually got deduction in this season even though she succeeded. So, 10 point deduction doesn't make sense.
7.5 and a one point deduction for a fall makes 8.5, and another potential 1~1.5 GOE marks lost should she have been able to execute that jump= would become almost 10 points of loss compared to when she did.
Mao later told the Japanese media that her foot was stuck in a hole in the ice.
Also, Her spins are much better in 2008 than 2007 when she just came into the senior scene

@elinzme lol, i was just reading that comment again thinking, since when was sasha cohen a threat to mao? or irina. lol
HelTra91 1 year ago

Anyway, peace!

i recently read an article about irina slutskaya, n she not coming bak for sure, so tat confirms irina, michelle kwan, her news r still unknown, but Kwan told the Associated Press in October 2007 that she would decide in 2009 if she plans to compete in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, n to where i pulled these news, it's called researchin on google, u should try it urself!!
lilbitch90 3 years ago 7
lilbitch90 It's not about Irina Slutskaya. She's not competing anymore, but occasionally performs in shows.

mao will be very happy if sasha will come back on olympic, because sasha is one of her favorite skater, i guess.

Base value of 3A is 7.5 point. And Mao usually got deduction for 3A even though she succeeded. 10 point deduction? no way..

It was a great performance, but not worthy of gold medal considering the big fall and missing choreography about more than 10 seconds.
eyh201 4 years ago

She was penalized enough.
