I find it extremely difficult to believe this is a recording that Mahler himself could have made. He died in 1911 during the "acoustic" era. The piano sound is simply "too good" to be authentic. Unless -- UNLESS this is a piano roll that has been "played back" on a modern instrument?
@Dan474834 Do not say stupid things. Mahler was a great composer, and I love it, but Bach's had more music in toenails than a million of Mahlers. Mahler himself if you hear it, said you were crazy. LOL.
Estoy impactado, ¡Que hallazgo! Poder escuchar a Mahler tocar el primer movimiento de su quinta sinfonía, sus tiempos, sus visiones y ejecutorias musicales e interpretativas, en síntesis, su versión.
I am shocked, what a find! To listen to Mahler playing the first movement of his Fifth Symphony, their times, their views and judgments and performing music, in short, your version.
@Man61ful la traduccion no esta muy bien, :-) deberia ser "his tempos, his views ....his version", no soy ingles, pero al menos cambia "their" por "his" , tendra mejor sentido. Saludos
The tempi are determined by the 'operator' and are indicated on the roll, but the Welte-mignon had lever adjustments; often the tempo would change (printed as the paper went by) and the operator would follow the instructions. Haven't seen this actual roll.
The.most difficult piece .I have ever played in my life from an orchestral point . Brass , and he loved it , every 2bar key change, meant for every oh fook resounding in the brass section transposition on your2 bar arse , But when you got it, then you understood the great man .his insight .Such a pity he was not so appreciated for his forward looking music , Alas I love it
@scottxu He started as many conductors do as a repetiteur (rehearsal pianist) in provincial opera houses. That's what enabled him to have a career which would have marked him out in history as a conductor and opera house administrator even if his compositions had sunk without trace. Which thankfully, they didn't. So now he's famous as composer, conductor and head of the Vienna Opera.

Please tell me, where can I get this recording?!

Interesting how vastly different his piano roll is from his extremely meticulously notated score. So much for composer "intentions"!

@GBADCD No other composer has been as musically prodigous as Mahler. Not even Bach.

Very revealing....but if I were to conduct this, I just couldn't see taking the trumpet/brass fanfares this fast (in places).
