  • I find it extremely difficult to believe this is a recording that Mahler himself could have made. He died in 1911 during the "acoustic" era. The piano sound is simply "too good" to be authentic. Unless -- UNLESS this is a piano roll that has been "played back" on a modern instrument?

There were doubts about this, but many believe that it is possible

  • Please tell me, where can I get this recording?!

  • Interesting how vastly different his piano roll is from his extremely meticulously notated score. So much for composer "intentions"!

  • it is difficult to talk to anonymous...

  • is it known what year and what location this was recorded/cut/whatever the appropriate verb is ?

  • Thanks for uploading this!

  • Best composer in the history of the world.

  • @Dan474834 do not exaggerate.

  • @GBADCD No other composer has been as musically prodigous as Mahler. Not even Bach.

  • One of the most amazing things I've heard on Youtube.

    Thanks a million.

  • The piano seems to be terribly out of tune ...

  • @73Adorno who cares its mahler <3

  • très bon, fantastique Mahler.

  • Estoy impactado, ¡Que hallazgo! Poder escuchar a Mahler tocar el primer movimiento de su quinta sinfonía, sus tiempos, sus visiones y ejecutorias musicales e interpretativas, en síntesis, su versión.

I am shocked, what a find! To listen to Mahler playing the first movement of his Fifth Symphony, their times, their views and judgments and performing music, in short, your version.

  • @Man61ful la traduccion no esta muy bien, :-) deberia ser "his tempos, his views ....his version", no soy ingles, pero al menos cambia "their" por "his" , tendra mejor sentido. Saludos

  • The tempi are determined by the 'operator' and are indicated on the roll, but the Welte-mignon had lever adjustments; often the tempo would change (printed as the paper went by) and the operator would follow the instructions. Haven't seen this actual roll.

  • Está muy buena la trascripción,me facina el escuchar como el piano puede sonar como una verdadera orquesta.

  • Very revealing....but if I were to conduct this, I just couldn't see taking the trumpet/brass fanfares this fast (in places).

  • Although the sound quality is not very good (bitrate), very, very interesting!!

    Thanks for posting.

  • Is this a piano roll recording?

  • @OwnYouScum Yes, Mahler recorded it on Pianola. There are also 2 other Roll's he played in.

  • Superb! The Maestro hinself shows the correct tempo!

  • The.most difficult piece .I have ever played in my life from an orchestral point . Brass , and he loved it , every 2bar key change, meant for every oh fook resounding in the brass section transposition on your2 bar arse , But when you got it, then you understood the great man .his insight .Such a pity he was not so appreciated for his forward looking music , Alas I love it

  • Didn't know Mahler was so good at the Piano too! Wow!

  • @scottxu He started as many conductors do as a repetiteur (rehearsal pianist) in provincial opera houses. That's what enabled him to have a career which would have marked him out in history as a conductor and opera house administrator even if his compositions had sunk without trace. Which thankfully, they didn't. So now he's famous as composer, conductor and head of the Vienna Opera.

  • dobreeeeeee

  • modern recording of the piano roll made by Mahler, 11-9-1905: google

    "Mahler Vorsetzer"

  • Who's playing?

  • @gnrtacos Mahler)

  • @LeRenardAP I didn't know Mahler recorded anything. But, if he did and this is him playing, this is a great trasure for humanity!

  • Thank you very much for posting this.

  • Thank you for posting! What a rare view into the Mahler's own interpretation of his great work ...

  • enorme

  • it's beautiful .... Mahler is greatest composer

  • it's beautiful . . . . Mahler is greatest composer

  • Charles Parker, Gustav Mahler, the 20:th century..

  • @jazzuffe Agreed

  • Greatest composer ever. ;)

  • I have allways said: Mahler is the only one composer in history that knew what for an orcherster is.

  • wow, this a skill!

    what a musical Intelligency

  • Thanks for this great post !

  • it is really awsome to hear gustav mahler playing his own symphony, and quite well at that.

  • Incredible orchestral pianism.....It seems to listen a full orchestra! He was an xcellent pianisit too......
