  • how do you know exactly which side to place the dot for a vowel? in the word set, i was thinking it would be placed on the right, but you put it on the left, why?

  • @ATGEC A circle-S doesn't count as a consonant because you can't put a vowel-mark on it. So it's the T that counts. And an e placed before a T makes et, and with the beginning circle-S it makes set. There are times when you must indicate a vowel before an S, so the curvy stroke-s, which looks like ), is used. Put a mark before ) and _, and it makes the word ask.

  • waw its soo great video that u have uploaded for needy students of Pitman.. if it possible to plz in own net video plz upload how to deployed position for alphabets of pit man also show us a demo plz.

  • @shamsherali1 If you want to see the complete details of the Pitman Shorthand system, please search for a Web-page called "Long Live Pitman Shorthand". The lady who wrote that page has it all in the "Theory" section. My video is just an illustration of the skill. This video does not provide very many details but other people have.

  • Really good video! Please make some more... Thanks.

  • @marcel1678 Someone else has done the work. If you look for a page called "Long Live Pitman Shorthand", the whole method is detailed there.

  • I used this back in the 80s in various jobs in England. As a Secretary, you were paid more if you had shorthand

  • SUCH a great series of videos- thanks !

It's true. In my highschool, more than 50% of the kids take notes on their computers... but I can't wait to spend my summer working on some pitman, it'd be so useful for notes !

  • it is a wrong dictation to write,

please correct that Mr's OUT LINE

  • Thanks very much for the videos. I tried to start learning Pitman New Era to assist with my creative writing, so that I could write quickly without the need for a computer. That proved a bit too difficult so I'm now learning Pitman 2000. It's very interesting but difficult! Your videos were really useful in seeing how to write, and how large to write (especially the -td halving stroke), which isn't always explained in the books. So, thanks again.

  • @holdways I use shorthand to write novel notes. I am only up to 90-100 words per minute, but that's better than 30. It's best to transcribe it to a computer file, though, you can edit more with it.

You may find that developing the high speeds may lead you to the large lists of short-forms for Pitman New Era. Pitman 2000 by convention only has 144 short forms.

  • Great video! I haven't even begun learning Pitman, and it was very useful to watch it being made and with simple explanations. I definitely feel like I have learned something today. :)

  • thank you so much man i completely understand now i mean

i had trouble before but now i nailed it to the tip of the pen

    nice tutorial

  • Thank you so much for this! you should do more of these videos. it's soo interesting:P i didn't even know something like shorthand writing excised before i watched you videos :)

  • @2dark2die It is what it is, a skill that has been kind of sidelined by modern gadgets. I'm not even the best example there is at it, and holding the camera in the other hand really slowed me down! Plus I'm doing the version of Pitman taught from 1922-1975; I am not adept at the Pitman 2000 method.

  • My mum was a secretary and used Pitman New Era for years. She got up to around 120 mins per minute... :O

  • @BrainyBabe24 Well that's better than me! I only learned from books, not from formal classroom and exercises.

  • This was very interesting (i watched all 3) thank you very much for taking the time to do this.

  • Hahah, well good, at least you watched my Pitman video through. I have posted only the first part on my site and get hits mainly for the first part. Maybe I did not make it easy enough to access all 3. Or people lose patience.

The skill of shorthand (whatever religious denomination you choose!) is still around, and still of use, although somewhat superseded by recording devices which are now cheaply added as a function on mp3-players and phones...
