There is no "right" or "best" version of this song. It's been around for at least before the Civil War and has been done and redone 1000's of times with just as many versions of the lyrics. No one is even certain just when it was written or who wrote it...or just what the original lyrics were. So IMO all versions are good. If nothing else, it keeps this great tune alive and kicking.
This sounds like Bill did this on the spur of the moment. So lets not get on him. Bill Monroe was great on a bad day. Don't forget that him and the Carter family blazed a path for so many of the other singers who came after them. Some one had to cut down the trees while others built the road that lead to Nashville and all the music we so love today.
This Bill Monroe version of 'Cotton Eyed Joe' lacks the direct lyrics of the Bob Wills version...It obscures the racial and sexual implications... But still...holvenstot2006@yahoo.com
Just over 15 hundred people have watched this video? probably the same eight people in this country who have good taste re-listening.I wish some of the young country stations would pay more respect to old time music so that it stays alive in the hearts of todays youth.I'm 21 and find the fans of bluegrass in my age group few and far between this music should be more widely appreciated.
@nicolaslafaceable I am with you friend. Few remember that it is men like, Bill Monroe, that who made it possible for the new generations after them to be great. From Hank Sr, to Toby Kieth. They all owe him a great debt.

The song went through a major change by the Texas fiddlers--a slightly different melody on the first two lines...

It sounds to me like "I'd a been married forty years ago if I hadn't been knock-knee'd, Cotton Eyed Joe".

At 0:40 "I'd a been married fourty years ago, if it hadn't (been mocking??) Cotton Eyed Joe"
At 1:07 "Say ma Gran mammy did you know, chicken in the bread pan scrachin' out dough."
2:03 "Dont you remember doncha know, Daddy work witha man called Cotton Eyed Joe."
at 1:41 "Cornstalk Fiddle and a shoestring bow, play a little tune called Cotten eyed Joe"
