  • Nip/Tuck brought me here!

  • I think the point of this song is to go beyond feelings going on right here and now. And to really grow up as human beings for handle feelings as feelings. Grow-up people can see those up above and still be humble for them....And still sometimes can't...I already forgot, what i just said...almost.

  • When it comes to painting a musical picture of losing a lover and the often devastating emotional turmoil humans go through after its "time for the wheel to turn", no one does it better than Todd. The middle section of this song with its swirling bright keyboards that are Todd's signature sound, his "la la las" - it has deep melancholy all over it. But take heart, Todd isn't one to dwell on these matters c'os the next song could be utterly at odds with the last. True Todd fans get it.

  • love this song Clinton!

  • Vanilla sky

  • Have all cds of Todd. Awesome singer and songs amazing. Have loved him for 20 years. This song is my funeral song. He's a genius yes and so underrated

  • Submerge beneath the superficial surface. Search the depths, till you discover the song within your soul.

  • Nip/Tuck brought me!

  • @Nalleko Me too, that scene was sweet!

  • one of the most underrated artist of all time...

  • @cfroi08 Agreed! It just doesn't get any better than this.

  • love the lyrics...

  • i didn't hear of this song until 1990 but i love it.

  • one of my favs!!!

  • Vanilla Sky!! and Dumb & Dumber!!

  • Great song by Todd - If you have not seen his performance with Darryl Hall (of Hall & Oates ) look it up - He is very unappreciated (IMHO)

  • Dumb and Dumber!!! Classic

  • I remember when he was on Midnight Special and performed this song...had a cool image of a ballerina on the piano. Thanks Blue O!

  • I love his music. He is brilliant. When I heard this song in Dumb and Dumber I wondered if it would peg the curiosity of those too young to know his music. I think it did.

  • A break up brought me hear. It was long ago, but you know how feelings still linger....on and on.

  • The quintessential break-up song

  • my favorite todd rundgren song.

  • His songs are some of my all time favorites. Brilliant guy.

  • The music love of my life!!!

  • IF U HAVE [EVER] BEEN IN IN LOVE U WILL UNDERSTAND THIS SONG, AND IM NOT TALKING PUPPY LOVE!!

  • Also he recorded and produced this album himself and played all the instruments! How many musician do that these days. and if you dare, check out "Skylarking" by XTC and "Halfway Down The Sky" by Splender. Todd produced both albums and they are great although Splender apparently fizzled out after their initial release and XTC recorded 3 more before apparently calling it quits.

  • first album of his that I bought while I was in Holland. Focus was literally splayed since I was working on different groups for my personal collection. Too bad I didn't have a physical list!

  • Best song ever !!

  • Never get tired of this song!!! Takes you to a magical place!!!

  • That's from Jim Carrey's film Dumb and Dumber

  • I meant hauntingly not haughtily!

  • @silvrjuli---yes, I get very sad every time I hear this song but I have had a very sad life so it shouldn't be unexpected to feel this way when you hear a song like this---as haughtily elegant as it is, it is a very sad song.

  • Niptuck.

  • the farrelly brothers must like todd rundgren this song comes out on dumb and dumber and todd rundgren i saw the light comes out on kingpin another farrelly brothers movie. i'm glad the farrelly brothers did use his songs though I dont think I would have gotten introduced to this great music if it weren't for those movies.

  • One of the most talented musicians in the history of music. Song writer, singer, producer(Grand Funk, Meat Loaf), pull up the track from his Utopia album. It kind of almost, almost makes Black Maria sound weak. Hiroshama, Nagaski, don't you ever fucking forget!

  • Something that's very interesting I just found out about Can We Still Be Friends, that links Vanilla Sky and Almost Famous.

Apparently Todd Rundgren wrote the song about his long time love Bebe Buell after they broke up (obviously). They lived together from '72 to '78, but she became pregnant to Steve Tyler in '77 and gave birth to Liv Tyler.

Cameron Crowe partly based the character of Penny Lane from Almost Famous on Bebe Buell, who he met as a teenager in the early '70s.

  • Reminds me of my bff back in the day when she moved into her 1st apartment & I was still living at home with my parents. I haven't heard from her in soooo long - last time I talked to her, she had relapsed on her meth addiction, so this song is bittersweet for me ... good memories ... bad memories .....

  • Nip/Tuck brought me!

  • BEAUTIFUL, very well done!

  • I haven't heard this in YEARS! I didn't even know it was Todd Rundgren who sang this song . . . until now. Great song and I'm sure I'll listen to this more than once. :)

  • Am I the only one who remembers Vanilla Sky?

  • I was a child who actually saw him performing this on the - wait for it- The Mike Douglas Show! I couldn't remember the name of this song but I always remembered the beautiful musical interlude and the " la-la las"! I finally heard it again years later and loved it ever since.

  • YES!! Dumb and dumber brought me here! It's cool hearing this song in its entirety!!

  • Does anyone besides me feel sad when they listen to this?

  • @silvrjuli only someone that is sad would feel sad to any song. music brings out ur true emotions, look inside urself ya must have felt or do feel like this in ur life :))

  • vanilla sky brought me here..great tune

  • Stumbled on to this, ths reminds me of being a kid and saying "when I get older this is the stuff I'm gonna listen to". Then I discovered heavy metal in the early 80s and moved forward, but sometimes, I stop & rediscover gems from my past/childhood, like this and think that same thought- "they just don't make songs like this anymore". Thanx for uploading/posting this, you made me feel young again.

  • I love the chorus. It has an eerie touch to it. It really adds to the emotion of the song :)

  • What if they shot you in the face?

  • caught in a relationship, something a person would want later in life when they settle down, it sucks. i listen to this song and think of what i should do.. stay together and possibly fall apart, or call it off and hope we meet again when the time is right.. AAAAAH, what should i do. i need a sign from the old man above.. this song is awsome, makes me want to move on.. Damn!!! tough on...

  • Stunningly brilliant- almost left me in tears only stopped my the fact that great music actually exists! Must thank BlueOrpheeus1988 for all the Utopia and Todd Rundgren-related uploads, u'r the man!

  • Vanilla Sky brought me!

  • Awesome song -- still...

  • Vanilla Sky and Dumb and Dumber. Gosh this track is so heartwrenching and makes me think about all those failed relationships

  • Once a Utopia...always a Utopia. Todd, thank you.

  • There are certain singer/songwriters who bring it from the heart. Todd is one of those. Thanks for bringing this back.

  • Todd Is a God sent! Brilliant and musically enlightening in every way...See Him every time he's in Town. Gotta Love HIM!

  • Love you Todd!!!! Lets admit we made a mistake!!!! Dont waste time feeeling hurt!!!

  • The 70's bought me here. This song used to be on the radio

all of the time when I was very young.

  • forgot how cool this song is …

    txs for the post

  • Great song by great artist. Have always loved the work of Todd Rundgren and he has give us so much to listen to. Great title and I hope others have asked that same question of me as I have of them. Can we still be friends????

  • Super song. Have always loved the work of Todd Rundgren; this is a perfect example of why. So many memories...

  • Great song.....Got the album...back in 1978.......

  • This song is awesome, but I wish steely dan wrote it, that would be esp killer

  • @Cooper51283 Wishing that this great song was written by Steely Dan rather than the genius that is Todd Rundgren is about the dumbest comment I have ever read on youtube ! You, my friend, are a clueless dumbas !

  • @spiderdragon1969 believe me theres much worse comments on youtube

  • Dumb & Dumber, of course! And the scene in Vanilla Sky when Tom Cruise suffocates Camron Diaz/Penelope Cruz during sex.

  • what makes a song great is that it makes peeps think it is about them....remember!

  • Had the album as a kid, brings back memories!

  • This song has stood the test of time- still awesome, great harmony, amazing counterpoint, great lyrics- awesome.

  • Todd was Liv Tylers dad...till she was 11...then...... she found out steven tyler was her real dad..either way.....check the talent!

  • Todd Rundgren is so cool. Such a unique sound. His music always takes me to a different place. :)

  • "he's got a gun"

  • @dthmon HAHAHAHAHA EPIC!

  • great break-up song. except it embraces co-dependency. no one remains friends when their very character and heart are rejected.

  • @RoboSlater only if you have fellings

  • @RoboSlater I would agree with you personally. But I can't tell you how many of my gay friends - including my husband - remains friends with one or more of their ex's. I'm not jealous...just baffled I guess because I have never been able to do this.

  • you people are so sellfish, can we still be friends....

  • more like 1974....

  • @THEpillows100 glad you understand

  • @THEpillows100 There we go, that's what I like to hear! Make sure you enlist in the Marine Corps on your way to the gym. That'll make you a man.

  • @THEpillows100 Jesus Christ "My life ended a long time ago"

Is this what happened to White men? They watch Vanilla Sky and they cry about girls from highschool. Go lift some weights or drink beer or something But quit the woman act.

  • @THEpillows100 yo life aint ended or you wouldnt be here just cause you lost your love get over it pussy

  • Todd wrote this about his breakup with Bebe Buell. Bebe Buell eventually married Steve Tyler of Aerosmith. You might remember Liv Tyler from the movie Armageddon. She is the daughter of Steve Tyler and Bebe Buell.

  • Covered by Rod Stewart in 1984 and Marc Jordan too.

  • Great song....reminds me of high school...just heard it on the radio today!

  • love those pregnant pauses in the piano as the human voices continue

  • first time i heard this song was on Dumb and Dumber :D

  • at 109 and 117 and scatterd vocals through out the song it seems like there is some joe walsh influence there or vise versa.

  • A friend told me that saying "We can still be friends" is like your mom telling you that your puppy died, but, you can keep him.

  • He looks like Ponyo's dad.

  • The part of Vanilla Sky where Tom Cruise is going down the stairs and this songs on the background is simply beautiful

  • Vanilla Sky and Nip/Tuck introduced me to this song its so deep especially in the show/movie. Cant gt enought of it...

  • He´s got a gun!

  • Mems of high school, a better time Summer of '78.

  • Best song I've heard this summer! It makes me feel mature. Even though we will always be growing up.

  • Dumb and Dumber. Lloyd save Mary and her husband appears.

Nip/Tuck Season 2 "Rose and Raven" Episode. Seand and Christian have sex whit a prostitute, tellin her that tonight he will be renamed Julia.

My best friend and me. He kiss my potential girlfriend. Hey! This song can work in a friend relation. Really, I forgive him, is my best friend :').

My favorite movie, my favorite serie and my best friend. This song just work on everything.

  • @ToboPriest I just heard it on Nip/Tuck yesterday and have listened to it about a dozen times. It's odd that I have no recollection of it from Dumb and Dumber

  • soundtrack to my teens

  • Dumb and dumber, haha... there's a part with this song

  • Light Up!

  • This song perfectly describes my feelings towards my ex. I hope she and I can learn to forgive each other and heal. We both had our fair share of mistakes and its too late to patch things up. But we can at least go on not hating each other. We had a lot of good times, though we have been trough hell and back. I hope someday we can still be there for each other even if it is in some other way. After all break ups aren't always bad because it gives couples opportunity to grow up and mature.

  • Hey bethany2781,I was looking for this song from the age of about 10 in 1980 but didn't know who the artist was until i saw the movie Dumb and Dumber and checked the credits...you do the math!!! One of my all time favorites!

  • i heard this on the radio back in the Spring of 1978. it was kind of a druggie song. too bad it is never heard on radio now. it's despicable that people find songs through dumb movies instead of through radio.

  • @The096757 it's not a dumb movie.. i mean yeah it's comedy, but the part where this song was played were at a non-funny scene... that's why i can remember the song, it made that part even emotional... haha it's a short part... it's a great song, reminds me of my ex...

  • @borneo215

oh yes.. not everybody is as dumb as you to easily look over things and especially over himself... some people care about things that you dont even dream of in your weirdest fantasies... just shut up and let people share their thoughts with each other to beautiful music which wakes up emotions... emotions that you pumped away i guess... im a bit jealous of you but never ever i want to be as fucking blind and stupid as you are mr. bullhorn...

  • @alexparrot1 Wish you the best of luck in your tough journey. This song also hits home to me for the same reason. Only time can heal,,,, good luck and stay strong

  • @alexparrot1 Wow bro, I'm really sorry. I can only hope you guys enjoyed the times you had together, if any. Although it's true when they say it's better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all.

  • Loved this since hearing it for the first time back in the 70's... the words just seemed to strike the right chord with my situation at the time. Beautiful lyrics. Great song.

  • It's a lovely song in the best way. Harmonies, the music and the lyrics mesh and accentuate each other so pleasurably to my ears. Thank you.
