tommy would disown you, he drew his inspirations from Chet and Travis. tommy is the best, sure. I'll give you that. But where would he be had he not listened to Windy and Warm playing on his radio when he was a little kid? who knows; give credit where credit is due. nationality shouldn't matter in music
a man simply playing the music he loves and the heart and drive to be the best he can be that drive and heart is in all of us granted he has taken years to be this good and for this im so glad and also glad to be a proud aussie
This song is called Jolly Swagman. But I'm sure most of you knew. And just like everything Tommy plays, it's wayyyyy off the charts!! We love you Tommy!!!
im positive that almost all the guitars he plays with, live at least, are all Maton's. I saw him pull out a vintage Gibson though when he was in Toronto.
This is 100% a Maton... TE mentions this almost every concert he s playing. This one he plays for more then 10 years, just have a look -> Its already heavily damaged, but he goes on playing it cause this is his favourite one. He said this when he was in Rietberg last year.
amazing! the melody, bass, harmony, percussion, rhythm - its all there, and at breakneck speed, no less! i've seen him in concert twice, but this never gets old.
I thougt so too. But the sound that he gets in this perticular song sounds a bit "effected"??? Any experience with Effect pedals that might give this kind of sound?? Thanx.
I love the way he brings in the bass a few bars in - it really puts life into the melody. Thnx for the post, I really wanted to know what this song was called!!
In the song Waltzing Matilda there is reference to a Jolly Swagman - this was the inspiration for this song and the reason he plays Waltzing Matilda at its end.
The more I listen to this song the more I like it. It does sound like Tall Fiddler and Lewis and Clark a little, but its still its own song. I like it alot.
Ha - sounds a bit like Lewis and Clark ran into a Tall Fiddler somewhere along the way. Anyone else hear it, or is it just my imagination? Either way, I never get tired of listening to Tommy play.
I wasn't overly impressed when I heard this a few months back, but now that Tommy has refined it, it's sounding really cool! I think it was wise that he skipped Waltzing Matilda at the start. Sounded nice and crisp here too! Thanks for posting!
Good stuff. There are a few other videos of this song up on youtube, but it seems Tommy increased the tempo a bit here. I think this tempo is much better for the song, sounds much more lively. :)
Love how he made the guitar sound like Bagpipes...words fail me!

@ZapperJet this is much harder to play than lewis and clark though. And apart from that, this is played with a thumbpick and L&C isn't.

Did you know that he damaged it on purpose? He has some song for which he uses those *damaged* parts. It was damaged for him actually.

I want a Maton. An Aussie guitar that has a great sound.

It's called "The Jolly Swagman"
Jik93 3 years ago
Yeah I know, but to Aussies, the second part of the song will always be Waltzing Matilda...that's where that tune comes from.
"Jolly Swagman" is one of the lines from the song. Waltzing Matilda is seen as our real national anthem here.
Tommy's turned it into his own version now which is just beautiful.
gluebum13 3 years ago
Ok I understand. Srry, didn't know you meant it that way. Thx for the correction btw.
Jik93 3 years ago
isn't a waltzing mathilda a slow and calm walk across the bush ? I recall I read something about it but I can't remember what...
mogofou 3 years ago
A waltzing matilda is to walk from place to place looking for work with all your belongings wrapped in a cloth on your back.
Basically like the original hobo's
It described the Swagmen or Squatters in Australia.
Great song too! hahah.
