  • ordinary people

  • @dvc75 Spot on! And GOOD people. Who gave us GREAT art.

  • I loooooooooooooooove seeing young Tony Perkins.....he is breathtaking.

  • @stripedshirts One handsome cat! :)

  • @stripedshirts Have you seen Social Network? I think that dark haired kid should play Tony Perkins in a biopic! I couldn't help thinking how much he resmbled him. : )

  • @1bol390 That's Good casting! What a smart idea. Wouldn't it be terrific if someone could make a narrative biopic about the Summer of 1965 on Malibu? Since Dominick Dunne was actually there, his books could be the foundation... very interesting possibillity!

  • @soapbxprod I would love to see it! Thanks to you and Roddy! : )

  • @1bol390 Who knows what might happen? Chris Murray, son of Don Murray and Hope Lange, has contacted us- he's one of the kids in the footage- so is his childhood friend Griffin Dunne... and George Axelrod's daughter has contacted us as well. It would be great to shoot them on the same spot today and edit them into the cut of our documentary... have you seen our assembly here on our channel? Title is:

    Hollywood 1965 Offline Assembly

    Hope that you like it!

  • @soapbxprod Thanks ,I'll check it out. : )

  • @1bol390 Wonderful! Only 8 minutes or so, but it will give you an idea of the style and form that we're trying for.

  • soapbxprod they also have many other parodies as well such as Julia Child and Julie Andrews hashing it out lol. Check out my favorites. I hope I'm not talking to much or asking too many questions.

  • @MrDennisatthebeach Do they really? Got to check them out! Love all your comments- and your questions- please don't hesitate! :)

  • grafonolafavorite I have seen the "Cream of Wheat "Parody . It is so funny yet respectful and tasteful at the same time.

  • @MrDennisatthebeach Exactly! Not nasty or malicious! Just fun- like a Frank Gorshin impression! The guy who made it is so talented- he does a great Judy!

  • @MrDennisatthebeach Don't you love David Selznick doing the NY Times Crossword? LOL! Talk about a driven guy!

  • Dear Rock and Judy @ 5:19. A movie with both of their sense of humours. What a blast that would have been.

  • @grafonolafavorite That would have been great! Have you seen the "Cream of Wheat" parody commercial on YouTube starring Liza and Judy?

  • I can't image footage like this today. Stars today would have a PR team in tow. I adore the style! Casual Chic at it's best. No one would dress like this today. 2000's so trashy.

  • @Pattyplace1 FOR SURE!

  • My gosh. David and Jennifer were neighbors of ours on Tower Dr. Amazing how great he looks here yet he would be gone in 3 weeks. What a time capsule.

  • @BarrieMil So happy that you enjoyed it!

  • @BarrieMil I'd love to see the finished film you're working on. These are amazing. I remember Judy rented a Malibu bungalow that summer. She was with one of those much younger men. I think she married him for about 15 minutes. One clip had a brunette in a yellow 2 piece & sunglasses. Was it Jennifer Jones?

Joan Axelrod was a dear friend (I knew her when she Stanton). She was a helluva hostess herself. Remember many parties on their big lawn. Again thanks for the memories.

  • Wonderful! Roddy really was Hollywood's best friend! Priceless footage.

  • @Muirmaiden No truer words! Everyone LOVED him. He was really kind to me!

  • Are we really sure the old dear is Gladys Cooper? To me she more resembles Cathleen Nesbitt. Hard to tell between the quick shots & no one wearing any makeup. By the way, it seems about 90% of these people are puffing away on fags. Lovely colour, probably Kodachrome II.

  • @dennman6 I could have sworn that someone who was there- namely Chris Murray, the son of Don and Hope Lange- said so?

  • @dennman6 Might have been George Axelrod's daughter who said that it was Gladys Cooper...

  • @dennman6 It is most definately Gladys Cooper (She was a friend's Aunt. And full of hell, too!) These films are fascinating. I see Freddie and Polly Fields and so many others whose names escape me. Thanks so much for posting.

  • who is that woman in the yellow shirt and fab. hat? even casual people looked good then--now its baseball caps and slouchy shirts, flop tops--ugh!!!

  • @windstorm1000 I can't remember- but someone named her in the previous comments... The really old lady is Gladys Cooper!

  • who is that good looking dude at 1:26 in the red shirt? sort of boyishly handsome. I like the men's hair styles at that time--very boyish.

  • @windstorm1000 Damn- I don't remember- I think that someone pointed him out in one of the previous comments...

  • nobody's really dressed up--'just' casual chic'--they are all having a break from their star personas--which can get pretty wearing. Roddy provided a place just to hang out & have hot dogs--much more genius than any fancy party. Perkins so handsome even in shorts--he and Roddy were great friends. I think that he is saying 'f----r' good naturedly to the camera man (Roddy). Thank goodness we have these images!! More important, glad the stars had a fun place from their pressure filled lives.

  • @windstorm1000 Don't you love Natalie Wood reading Esquire? And David Selznick doing the Times Crossword?

  • @soapbxprod among all the hundreds of delicious details--among the healthy outdoors with surf, sand, laughter and vollyball.

  • @windstorm1000 Does life get any better? I ask ya!

  • Ohhhh anthony perkins was such a babe!!!! its so weird to think that most of them are dead! so very strange and kinda sad!

  • @xXsamiiiXx Well after all, it was 46 years ago! A long time past... But the quality of the Kodachrome images makes it look as if it were shot last summer...

  • @soapbxprod i know right! the quality is so good.. 46 years? damn that was a long time my mom was a little baby lol

  • @xXsamiiiXx I was 5! LOL

  • Comment removed

  • these 'parties' really get to gethers were, I think, more popular than any other get togethers--Roddy figured out that stars just needed to hang out have a hot dog and chat---no fancy costumes, jewelry or bullshit. They have to take a break from their personas too!! Check out Dunne's book on this.

  • I don't care who was at this party Judy Garland is here I would have been following her all day at that party and asking her ton's of questions about her career ,over the rainbow, Liza ,everything and anything also I would've also been talking to Natalie Wood non stop also both beautiful women both doe eyed both brunnettes wow ..people were more classy back then especially women.

  • @cinderelmo Not even David Selznick? LOL- he's no doe eyed brunette, but he did make Gone with the Wind! Natalie is my favorite actress of ALL TIME- and Judy... The great chanteuse of the 20th Century! Who even came close? :)!

  • @soapbxprod Well yes I would talk to him okay he may not be a doe eyed brunette lol cause Judy and Natalie kinda look alike the doe eyes but yes I would talk to him about the movie and Clark gable and Viven Leigh and yes that was the year Judy made the wizard of oz, but come on Judy Garland wow she is one of the great cinematic beauties and Natalie Wood come on and yes of course I would ask Rock Hudson about Doris day I suppose and talk to handsome Anthony Perkins and talk to Lauren Bacall.

  • @soapbxprod and talk to Lauren Bcall about Bogie obviously as well I think and Jane Fonda about her career but I would have been mesmerized by Judy Garland out of all the people there she had such a great mystique about her not just because of her career etc. or music, she had an aura about her kinda like Michael Jackson just magic you know, her voice was so beautiful and Natalie Wood also had like a mystique not the same like Judy's but they were both really elusive to me and in their films.

  • Thanks, I couldnt find anything and the ones mentioned as dating er during that time were actors I know.

  • @snakey319 Courtesy of another loyal viewer! They posted the answer on the clip with Dominick Dunne, Natalie, and Blatnik sitting together giving the "fingernail off the teeth" screw you gesture!

  • @soapbxprod Turns out his daughter married into the Greek royal family, he led an interesting life that unfortunately ended in the mid 80's.

  • @snakey319 Wow! That's fascinating. Sorry to hear that he passed on.

  • Who is the man with Natalie Wood, he is in a few of the vids?

  • @snakey319

That was Natalie's fiance. She broke off the engagement in late '65.

  • @brooklynborn81 do you know his name?

  • @snakey319 His name is Ladslavik Blatnik. He was engaged to her in '65. The following year she met Richard Gregson. They had a brief marriage in the early '70s, that produced a daughter. 3 months after divorcing Gregson, she remarried Wagner.

  • The surprising thing about these films is that love abounds for these performers. It isn't as if we are voyeurs, it is as if we are grateful for their talents, and this is a history of the celeb phenom that brings us close to them as people, not just celebs.

  • @Alandix They were artists first! Celebrities second.

  • Polly Bergen looks so beautiful here. So does Suzanne Pleshette. Actually they look a little alike. STUNNING both!

  • @calalilygirl And Polly is still going strong! Suzanne was like the French Natalie Wood!

  • @soapbxprod French?Always thought Suzanne was Russian Jewish? My aunt used to go to the same temple as her folks on the UWS. Thanks for posting these vids. They are just fascinating. Everyone is so naturally elegant and attractive. Today's 'celebs' could learn a thing.... or three.

  • @ssinnyny I'm an Upper West Wider too! 124 West 79th Street. Until my folks moved across the park to 81st between 5th and Madison. Went to Ethical Culture & Fieldston- all my best friends lived all over the UWS! Love to you this Christmas season, and Happy New Year! Luke Sacher

  • @ssinnyny Yes, Suzanne is Russian Jewish--she picked a stylish name to be sure--I love her. With a name like hers she puts cognac on her latkes!

  • @windstorm1000 HA HA HA! Cognac on her latkes! ROTFL!

  • I love how some of them are very covered up. They probably were shooting a film and couldn't get too much sun. I sent these to my friend who is a costume designer. She said it is very hard to find original examples of casual wear like this. She loved them. So thanks!

  • @DorianDevereaux You're very welcome- I worked crew for many years, as an assistant cameraman... please look me up on the iMDB-

    Luke Sacher

  • Could that be Jennifer Jones' daughter with her at 6:10?

  • @brooklynborn81 Certainly is! And David Selznick doing the crossword! And... Robert Walker Jr. her son is in one of our clips too- with Juliet Mills...

  • @soapbxprod

Who can forget Juliet, in "Nanny And The Professor" and Robert Walker Jr. in an episode of "Star Trek" called 'Charlie X'.......LOL

  • @brooklynborn81 Know them both- Juliet is Hayley's sister- both are daughters of John! And Star Trek- my uncle Tony Call was in the pilot- "The Corbomite Maneuver",,,

  • Natalie Wood was so cute!! So Beautiful!!! They sure did smoke a lot in those days. That's why most of them died of cancer.

  • @edstrat69 Natalie- my absolute favorite of all time...

  • @5:30 David O Selznick

  • @ELECTRICCLOCK Tell me something I don't know.

  • @ 3:36 Tony Perkins says "fuck you" read his lips ...he does it again after that.

  • @ELECTRICCLOCK Boys will be boys...

  • Was wondering who the girl in the light teal blue check pants is with the black hair in the kerchief? Sitting with a man. BTW love all these clothes they're sporting... Good Grief! It's like a fashion show.

  • @calalilygirl Along the edge of the Deck? Facing the beach?

  • @soapbxprod Yes, next to an older man in blue sweater holding a baby. And younger man in red sweater to her other side.

  • @calalilygirl I'm totally stumped! Could it be Anjanette Comer?

  • I used to always love watching Doninick Dunne on Larry King Live. He was always articulate and interesting. Miss him.

  • @calalilygirl His show on Court TV was great! Have you read his books, for example "People Like Us" and "The Way We Lived Then"?

  • @calalilygirl I'm sure that you know that Griffin Dunne is his son?

  • Nobody mentions Polly Bergen

  • @ROMALA40 I KNOW! And she was a BIG star! We listed her in the tags list...

  • Loved seeing Judy Garland, wow...... What a moment in more innocent times.

Anyone notice in another movie of the Lighter Fluid being poured on someone's feet., Being close to Galveston, Texas. I recognize that there must have been Tar on the beaches.. Couldn't ever imagine it being in Malibu.... the 1960's..... DRILLING must have been going on everywhere.

  • @happels Oh sure! There were oil drilling derricks and pumps all over Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City, and down the coast- remember in "Touch of Evil"?

  • @happels I know she and Roddy must have gone way back together, though Judy was older.

  • Loved seeing Suzanne Pleshette... Mom told me years ago, that she and my dad were in Vegas I believe in Dec 1973. She saw Suzanne in a gift shop, and mom had already taken most of who's who of Hollywood's .... From George Burns, to Morey Amsterdam to Rosalyn Russell. Suzanne, though begged my Mom to not take her picture, that her hair was a mess and no makeup on,, My mom obliged. Suzanne and others famous alumni were there for Tina Sinatra's wedding taking place there at the time.

  • @happels Very cool story!

  • Stewart Stern is the campish, bald guy sitting next to Tony Perkins. He seems to have been a regular guest

  • @supernumery Thank you for the info! Greatly appreciated.

  • None of these guys had any muscle tone -what a drab crowd.

  • My god, EVERYONE SMOKED!! Awesome flick, thanks!

  • @prodigal1978 Like Chimneys! LOL! You're most welcome- please check out all of our other Roddy clips!

  • Who was more beautiful, Jane Fonda or Natalie Wood?

  • @listentome94 NATALIE for Sure! She is my one and only true love- except for my wife! She understands!

  • @listentome94 - love Jane, but it is certainly NATALIE who is the stunning vivacious beauty that all eyes are drawn to. You cannot NOT look at her and want more.

  • to see all these people hanging out with eachother, not just reading about it, is really something else

  • @meloveicecream24 And they're so NORMAL! So unaffected! Where did we go wrong?

  • Awesome clip!

Can you point out Stewart Stern? Rachel, Rachel was such a memorable film!

Sad to read that Anthony Perkins widow was killed on 9/11. She was aboard one of the planes that hit the World Trade Center.

  • @brooklynborn81 I can't but maybe someone else can? Anyone out there? Help this gentleman please!

  • thank you so much for posting these, truly a treasure! it's almost surreal to see all of them in color and conversing as friends. makes it look like it was taken just last week.

  • @superhetoric Wait until you see the uncompressed Digital Betacam telecine masters in the feature length doc- these are just U-Matic SP window dubs uploaded to YouTube!

  • wow.... Judy Garland for little bit! sigh

  • Please , who are in 0:10 till 0:20???

  • @MultiMissyl Sorry- we don't know for sure! I believe that someone has mentioned their names in the comments below...

  • as a "movie freak" , it is a great pleasure seeing all those movie people hang out so effortless with eachother. i wonder if todays movie folks hang out like this?? Natalie Wood & Jane Fonda are both looking gorgeous in this clip !! Jane @4:21 LOL.

  • How fantastic! I've been sent back in time... And then there is Stewart Stern ("Rebel", Sybil", " Rachel,Rachel", The Rack"), Elliot Kastner, Serena Stewart with Tom Tryon, Tom Mankiewicz, and Ladisloff Blatnic (sp.?) with Nalalie.

  • To think how few of those beautiful, talented people are still alive. Semper culti in memoria.

  • @Surfwriter2 Bene dicti! Salve!

  • what a joy to see. a piece of americana. a golden moment. thanks so much.

  • @dina113east Our pleasure! Think that there are so many of us who want to see this America return! Now if we could just find the road map!

  • I see that that older woman is the great Gladys Cooper. Amazing that that space literally forces everyone to have to talk to one another. It must have been a lot of fun.

  • @leighgate The brightest and prettiest people on the planet in 1965!

  • That one scene is great; Natalie Wood, Judy Garland, Lauren Bacall and Rock Hudson all sitting around together.

  • @leighgate Once in a lifetime! Or at least every Sunday that one summer long...

  • Anyone wondering who the woman is in the purple shirt, that's Lenny Dunne, Dominick's wife and Dominique's mother.

  • @elfinmajictime Thanks! we are in touch with Don Murray and Hope Lange's son Chris, who is also friends with Griffin Dunne- they are both in many of the clips,

  • @JudygarlandRulez15 It's definitely there- just Google search my name, and the iMDB link will be the first on the search list. Luke Sacher

  • @JudygarlandRulez15 Judy... what can ya say? That TV show she had used to scare my folks- they thought that she would crack in half right in the middle of every one!

  • @JudygarlandRulez15 Emmy winning doc filmmaker- iMDB me! Luke Sacher

  • @JudygarlandRulez15 Hello- if you look for my name on the iMDB, and read the past comments here, you will have your answer! Long story short- family friend! Luke Sacher

  • Of course, nothing can surpass that time for casual elegance. The people are thin, not overly fit, just well toned. The women are feminine and still have some propriety and the guys have not yet succumbed to the hippie ugliness that destroyed men's style for a generation. They had broken free of the 1950s and were poised to live in a modern, liberated era.

  • @JohnELooker You are so spot on! These are the best and the brightest! Thank you! Love you for your kind words!

  • Is Tony Randall in this?

  • @impassable No! Can't find him anywhere... oh well!

  • Judy Garland !! WOW the biggest talent of them all and how beautiful is Natalie Wood. Gorgeous !!

  • @MyBonnieblue Natalie Wood... no other woman comes close, except for my wife Martha- who looks a lot like Barbara Stanwyck! Robert Wagner narrated our biography of Lana Turner, which is also here on our channel page.

  • Who's the dame in the white slacks, yellow blouse and straw hat w/ yellow thingies attached to it?

P.S. Sorry, I think Edith Piaf was the GREATEST chanteuse of the 20th century!

  • @mylesag2 That's a great choice! My favorite is... Keely Smith! As to the dame in the straw hat- we're trying to remember! Sometimer's Disease! LOL

  • @mylesag2 Although I can't quite imagine her at this kind of gathering, the woman in yellow/white looks quite a bit like Barbara Steele of so many Hammer films, and 8-1/2, but also Roger Corman "Poe" films, like PIT AND THE PENDULUM.

  • @ricola3333 Barbara Steele? How interesting. But I think in the mid-60s, she was doing some Italian horror films. So it would be kinda odd to find her mixing with the 'smart set' of Hollywood at the time.

  • Wonderful!

  • @futurelegendfilms Thank you most sincerely!

  • The greatest star in the bunch is Judy Garland!!! Great footage!!!

  • @formermgmstar No doubt about it! "The greatest chanteuse of the 20th Century!"- Lillian Burns Sidney

  • OMG Judy Garland 5:15

  • ...or George Cukor...?

  • @juliusmaloney Right again!

  • Is that David Selznick...?

  • @juliusmaloney Sure is!

  • Omg, Natalie Wood...

  • @juliusmaloney My one true love- aside from my wife!

  • Oh, and Gladys Cooper! So cool to see her here.

  • @GracieM1968 Hun! Well done!~

  • Isn't Natalie Wood beautiful here - what a gathering! I love that they're just hanging out, reading Peanuts and doing the crossword...

  • @GracieM1968 She slays me... my wife Martha doesn't mind! LOL

  • You also see Judy Garland at the 5:20 mark.

  • @fkd1963 Spot on! Isn't it fun to find them?

  • The older man with the silver hair in the sky-blue shirt is David O. Selznick, producer of "Gone with the Wind."

At the time these home movies were shot (5/31/1965), he had exactly twenty-three days to live; he died of a heart attack on June 22nd at age 63.

  • @SageOnHudson That is spot on! Just uploaded a clip featuring him obsessed with a crossword puzzle- think that clip was a week before he died. Jennifer Jones is all over these clips too.

  • @SageOnHudson I know- take a look at the clip featuring him doing a crossword!

  • Omg, that little girl in the playpen is like my age!

  • @imajeepster I was 5! LOL! I had just seen Cat Ballou I think... my parents were very progressive!

  • Do you happen to know who the beautiful couple is at 2:36? I can't place them, the woman looks sorta like Natalie. I think I may kick myself when I find out!

  • @KalBackus Might be Anjanette Comer?

  • @KalBackus The man, at least, (wearing red jacket) is Tom Tryon.

  • @ricola3333 Great! Thought he looked familiar- loved 'The Cardinal'. Still at a loss for the girl though, I don't think it's Anjanette Comer, but I could be wrong.

  • fairly interesting side note(!) at 4:37 Janice Rule and Ben Gazzara are both dressed in yellow- in another clip they are both in orange- wonder if this was a conscious decision! lol

  • @KalBackus Ben Gazzara! He deserves as much recognition as Peter Falk and John Cassavettes!

  • @soapbxprod He certainly does! And Janice too was no slouch- if you've ever seen '3 Women' you know what I mean!

  • @KalBackus What a movie!

  • @soapbxprod :)!

  • just watched this clip again- it's rare to find footage of people like Tuesday Weld these days- here she's really beautiful and looks really interesting. And the shot of Tuesday, Judy Garland, Lauren Bacall and Rock Hudson- talk about an interesting cast- woah, to be a fly on the wall at one of these things!

  • I wish I could lip read.

  • @stephenwalls1 Me too! Would love to know what Kirk Douglas and John Frankenheimer are discussing. They are two of my idols.

  • That appears to be Dominick Dunne at 5:25. In 1965, he was a vice-president at Four Star Television.

  • @kmhays64 It most certainly is Dominick Dunne. Good eyes! BTW- I am the grandson of Abner Biberman- check his name and mine- Luke Sacher on the iMDB!

  • I read Sal Mineo's biography last year sometime and I think they tried to convey this period- where the movie stars would hang out on at the beach- it's great to see some footage of this.

  • @KalBackus Yes! And so normal and unpretentious! Notice that they are drinking jug wine with paper cups!

  • I also spotted Anthony Perkins and Suzanne Pleshette. I love the mugging for the camera! Thank you for posting these!
