Bought this game fro gamestop used quite a few years ago. Played it for like 2 days and took it back and got something different. I didn't have a manual so was tedious trying to learn how the game worked without internet guidance and honestly it was just boring.
THANK YOU! Finally! I found someone that appreciates SaGa Frontier II! It's such an under-appreciated game that most people view it as the black sheep of the series (other than Unlimited SaGa).
It's really not that bad game if you understand what they were going for: console version of a tabletop RPG. If you don't understand, then of course, it's gonna be frustrating.
Yeah I know what you mean. I've played the 1st SaGa Frontier and I loved it. Unlimited SaGa on the other hand wasn't a bad game,it just wasn't explained at all. I had got the game when it first came out and I got the mini strategy guide that came with. Both the instruction manuel and the guide were worthless. I've spent about 2 weeks on that game before I quit. I'm a person that if you don't explain a game to me the right way then I'm not gonna play it at all.
@NinjaGamer64 Yet everything he said is true... except for the traps and the booby trapped treasure chests which can be avoided if you have a character with the right ability. l beat the 1st dungeon but since there was no way for me to regain LP (life points which are more important than HP) l got killed by a random sucker on the next one... the music is good but that's about the only thing in this game. Follow his advice, for your own good.
I was so excited about this game back then... I even bought the European "limited edition" (which is not limited at all, since it's the only edition available in Europe as far as I know). Most disappointing game ever.
I posted before I wanted to finish. I know the combat is different in it's selecting attacks to that of spinning a wheel. Though, most treasure in Wizardry I-III is always trapped and their is various was it is that you guess from. Wizardry III you had to have a players guide in order to get a few of the required items, the same can be said for Wizardry V, which is very similar. I mean most are up till VIII.
@Ricky156 Wizardry came with a detailed instruction manual. There was also a strategy guide released; look at my Wizardry review. The NA release of Unlimited SaGa was not released with a good instruction manual or any strategy guide. Also Unlimited Saga was made by a company who with other titles has included detailed in-game tutorials for complex systems inside the game itself, whereas Wizardry was the first game someone made back in the 80s. There is no comparison here.
I think if you press one of the R or L buttons(can't remember which one exactly might be 1,2 or 3) on the "map"/board it lets you skip a turn to rest, that heals your HP.
One of the biggest problems with the game is that there are no dungeon or location maps and despite being a like a board game you don't get to see the whole board, just adjacent spaces. It's ridiculously easy to get lost because there's no indication that you're going the right way.
Goodie, I haven't seen a review this bad since ages.
This game has a lot of flaws, yes, but your whining over minor stuff... A lot of stuff just requires getting used to. The game has some nasty stuff and I don't blame anyone for not liking this game, but you didn't give it a proper review.
The voiceacting is great, the music is nice, the story is interesting. And maybe ... just maybe... your just not right for this game. Your stupid, not the game.
@NinjaGamer64 The problem is that Square didn't bother to tell anyone how to play the game. But even when you know how that doesn't make it anymore fun.
Lets not forget the "turn system" where as IF you survive all the friggin booby traps and monster encounters, if you run out of Turns before you reach the end of the dungeon you're sent back to town to do it all again. Yeah I own this game I have beat this game and this game blows dogs for quarters. >:{
lol I also got this game clueless of what awaited me, but I kinda enjoyed its tabletop rpg nature, too bad that it's unplayable without a decent rulebook.
Also, every time you die, the dungeon in which you died gets harder. What? I died, make if friggin easier!
Wait! No way to heal yourself in an RPG game? Right there, that's a whole new level of fucked up!
9:23 you kinda remind me of the good old JamesNintendoNerd
Good stuff. Making a review of this game, but at the same time torturing yourself for us to see, how awful this game truly is... just no words, that's a whole new level of badass brother
@XENON3120 There is a way to heal but it's not intuitive; don't let your characters fight during turns and they gradually recover small amounts of HP. The instruction booklet doesn't tell you it nor does anywhere in-game tell you. What's really messed up is how NOTHING is explained in the English instruction manual about how to play this game and I'm not kidding on the encyclopedia length Japanese one. I have the "Beginner's booklet" and its pretty thick.
@jfreedan I dream of day every game has a English instruction manual sizes of a world, but this game Hell NO! I'll rather see myself buy and play something good like Grandia,Lunar 2,Castlevania the list goes on and on,this gets me to a question if i may ask of course. What your all time fav PS1 RPG game? I was looking for some newer PRG games and yet no luck.I'm more of an old school gamer,Its hard to find something that's actually good this days, maybe I'm just to old-school. Any recommendation?
ROFL. Very cool review. Made me rofl a couple of times.
This was the first aweful game I ever bought from Square-Enix.
It was also the first game I bought from Square since they merged with Enix.
Enix has ruined Square, the guy who directed Final Fantasy 1 to 10 (Hironobu Sakaguchi) founded his own company called Mistwalker. They've developed a lot of games that look and feel like the classic Final Fantasy's. Give it a look sometime.

Only towns out in the boonies use bartering over money. They aren't big cities, they want shit they can use.

@DogiTheWallcrusher You are missing the point of this review. NOTHING is explained in-game or in the instruction manual.
jfreedan 6 months ago
@jfreedan My copy of the game didn't even come with an instruction manual and I learned how to play it on my own when I was 16.
Also there is a pretty good compendium on status effects and other combat mechanics in the menu

This game looks convoluted as hell. You know anytime you start a game with a "barter system" there's going to be shit-filled fetch quests galore.
And why would anyone want to fight using a random ass wheel of fortune? FUCK!

It is indeed a very awful game. Full of absolute fail on many accounts.
Saga Frontier 2 was awesome (but friggin hard it was one of the few PSone rpgs I couldn't finish).
I played it at a friends and I think I lasted 30 mins before I said that this was one of the worst rpgs I've played.
Unfortunately I made the vow to collect every JRPG this included.
But believe me once it gets put on my shelf it's locked in never to be played ever.
