DOES ANYONE ELSE SEE THE DEAD JAPANESE GUYS FACE AT 5:41??? (when the planes are flying by, watch the lower right hand corner of the screen...) I've watched this in slo-mo 100x, and am convinced that is a dead guys face, who probably died during bombardment or something. please, someone tell me i'm not crazy
Im sure at the scene where the Marines are drinking the captured Japanese Water the Marine on the far right of the scene handing a cup of water is John Basilone who went on to be awarded the Congretional Medal of Honour for actions on Guadalcanal.
@TheFlowerchimp That looks nothing like Basilone. You have a crush after watching The Pacific. This took place after Guadalcanal. Besides, if you knew anything about Basilone you would know he fought in the 6th, not the 2nd, which it clearly says at the beginning. Basilone was back in the states knee-deep in pussy on a war bond tour. He wouldn't return to battle until D-Day of Iwo, and after playing a critical role in the invasion, was KIA from shrapnel. Semper Fi
This is what it takes to protect a liberal society. So while you curse the Marines, spit on our flag, and make fun of our policies. Remember these men because they paid for your PRIVILEGED TO DO ALL THOSE THINGS AND MORE!
These wars are the reason our country is in such bad shape. Our brave, patriotic, strong men go fight and die, while malingerers and cowards like Bush, Cheney, and Clinton hide on the home front and infiltrate political offices. War separates the wheat from the chaff, then burns the wheat. The USA will not survive the 21st century if it continues the 20th century practice of sending its best men to die on the whimsy of politicians and profiteers.
@popcornwithpeanuts Yes, my friend, that is definitely the thing to do. If you haven't already and want to read the definitive story of Tarawa, read "Utmost Savagery" by Col. Joseph Alexander. He pulls no punches. Tells it like it really was.
This film is "propaganda" for the home front. "Everything according to plan" is the watchword repeated over and over. What they don't tell you is that the Navy didn't plan properly for the reef around Tarawa. Many of the landing craft couldn't get over it and became hung up, forcing Marines into shoulder deep water five hundred yards from the shore. You can well imagine the ordeal of these men, heavily weighed down and slogging ashore under intense fire. They were amazing men.
the greatest generation, yet after them their kids, grandkids and for some great grandkids get called murders. war criminals. imperial stooges, all while trying to keep those same A-holes back home safe....obiviously we forgot big time while these men never will
These men , real giants, came back home in 1945. In 1960 and onwards their vomit children were 15 and up years old : they considered their fathers a bunch of idiots . Centred around the university campus, they were only interested in sexual revolution, feminism, gay rights , masturbation, cocaine, the pill , hippying, etc. and they were very proud of themselves and only willing to spit on their fathers and mothers faces or on the fathers memory if the fathers were dead in the Pacifi war !!!
@JunkVid You are a brain-injured man, with more lesions (congenital, traumatic, ischemic, infectious, etc..) resulting in impairment of brain activity
my uncle Kenny was here. He was a Sgt at Guadalcanal and got promoted to Lt after that. He then went to Tarawa and he is quoted as saying after the first day he was the only officer left on Red Beach 3
These Marines and Navy Corpsman were very special warriors. One of my best friends was at Tarawa and he recently died. My father and I talked with him for over 10 years about his experiences at Tarawa and also Guadalcanal. The 2nd Marines at Tarawa were tough as nails! A lot of Sailors died there too. The Navy established the Underwater Demolition Teams UDT's because of the amphibious nightmare of Tarawa. God Bless The Vererans of Tarawa and thank you for posting this. Semper Fidelis
This is the pentagon sanitized version that doesn't show how really bad it was. My dad was on Saipan and Tinian. Over 6,000 Marines died on Iwo Jima alone. The Pacific island campaigns were the bloodiest battles of the war. Our parents were the bravest people the world has ever known. They are the reason we are free.
The Japs were at war in China since the 1930s. They were veterans. My dad saw them advancing down Malaya. They march in their sleep! Each man put his hands on the pack of the guy in front of him.
You all do know that the footage is real, but there are parts of it that the government cuts out. For instance they cut out the bloody parts and the nasty parts. There are scenes that they don't show that have pieces of body's, Burning flesh, or the men hanging from the tree's they also cut out the Japanese doing their banzai charges. They captured some really deep shit. But the government doesn't want us to see that. It's Military footage.
hard core mothers everyone of them. was really amazed that they didnt just overdub the explosions or rifle fire; sounds like actual recordings during the filming. plus showing the dead on the beach. i read that they had to get permission from fdr to show it.
the word "Tarawa", you hear it the first day you step on the Island,(PI). You know it's history to the letter by the time boot is over. Look up Amphibious assault and you'll see it doesn't exist in the army training manual. Not many of these boys left. Semper Fi guys.
The Japanese were way out of their league to start a war with the U.S. Think of it, the U.S.'s technology back then was far far far more advanced than Japans. They can produce 3 times the number of weapons, tanks, aircraft, and ships than the Japanese could. Fighting the Japanese was like fighting wild untrained Animals. They were nothing compared to the U.S. Think of it as today, fighting the Arabs today was how it was fighting the Japs. They put up a fight, but it wasn't a hard one.
@SerenityIsTheMan You're right in some regards, but consider this from ADM Nimitz - "The Japanese put up an awfully good war". Think he was in a position to know? And BTW, the U.S. has lost 5,000+ KIA / 35,000 WIA since 9 / 11 fighting the "Arabs". Give the families of those 40,000 people some respect by not stating that the fight "wasn't a hard one". OK, that said, go have your daily Burger King dose, get back to your PS3, and keep your mouth shut unless you're willing to boot up yourself.
@ratricide People have opinions in their own comments. Why are you so mad, try to understand. I do have respect for those families who have lost their loved ones. Okay, thanks, bye.
@MrS5099 I'm assuming you know absolutely nothing about what the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan go through every day and night, so why don't you do America a favor and shut up. "It isn't even hard". Go join the fucking military and prove that piece of shit statement, you dickcheese. You give civilians a bad name.
@ratricide You read as if you got sand in your pussy! Fact is the cats right. That doesnt diminish whats happend nor does it be little anyones service, it simple fact. As you stated 5K KIA and 35 k wia in two wars over ten years! We took 26,000 casualties in less then 30 days on IWO alone!
The sustained ferocity of combat is simply not comparable. Dont worry, you can still tell all your war stories!
@SerenityIsTheMan Sorry bud, you are completely wrong here. The US tech at the entry in the war was sub-par to Japans in many if not most areas. You are correct that we could out produce them, it was more like 7 times. Fighting the Japanese should get more credit than you give them. I guess that you haven't sat and talked to an Iwo vet or a Saipan vet..they will tell you different. The Japanese were well trained and disciplined fighters, nothing like the Arabs.
I'll never forget seeing that scene of dead Marines sprawled across that beach on Tarawa. In fact, the full version of that graphic footage is included in the National Geographic documentary, Combat Cameramen. I saw that first before I watched With The Marines at Tarawa.
