Do you need internet for this to work? just because going abroad data charges will be an arm n leg...so if i have it in airplane mode or data turned off...will this work? thanks
when i start my navigation it says GPS reception is currently not sufficient . Navigation starts automatically as soon as GPS reception is Ok again. So what do i need to do now please help me out!!
I saw on TomTom you said that you can play music and it will mute it and tell you your turns. Does Navigon do the same? I'm sorry if you mention it in this video. Which is the preferred GPS?
Lots of things have changed since this review. There is Google POI search, text-to-speech, I think you should update this so people considering buying this app do not get the wrong idea. Good explanations and information, but 3/5 for out-of-date content. :-)
@malonlave If NAVIGON doesn't have a GPS lock, it will go into simulation mode or just wait. Otherwise you'll get a red bar up top if it loses signal mid-trip. If you're not in simulation and you're running, then it has sufficient GPS signal.
gps reception is currently not sufficient!!! gps reception is currently not sufficient!!! gps reception is currently not sufficient!!! gps reception is currently not sufficient!!! gps reception is currently not sufficient!!! gps reception is currently not sufficient!!!
The GPS often loses signal because the iPhone has a very small antenna.
On 3G the processor is too slow and has audio problems when its multitasking with the music playing, but works fine on the 3GS.
Overall its very close to the dedicated GPS units, but NOT nearly as reliable. Dedicated GPS devices have MUCH more sensitive and faster GPS acquisition.
So don't throw out your dedicated GPS just yet. The iPhone has a long way to go before it can replace it.
@dinnerandashow I don't agree -- I've been using in-car GPS systems in my Toyotas for the last 7 years and have found them to be head and shoulders above any other car or handheld (Magellen/Garmin) systems. I've been using AT&T Navigator daily for work for 9 months and it's been generally equal to what I'm used to, except multi-destination trips. Just bought Navigon because it seems fully better than anything else. I don't know why anyone buys a dedicated GPS any more with cheap iPhones.
hello hello big problem..i recently got this app and now its being so useless everytime i put in an add it takes forever or sometimes doesnt even come up...all it says is gps cannot be found at this time and will connect when it does...today i drove half an hour and still no signal...by the way i have tmobile and do not have data networking...this stinks where do i complain since it cost me that much
If you cant hear the volume. Buy a double sided headphone cord 3.5mm. One end of the cord goes into the iphone the other into your cars auxillary port(if you have one) and problem solved. Adjust the volume as necessary.
I downloaded the update 1.1.0, and has text to speech for the name of the freeways only, and it seems a little big more robust application, I can't wait for the next update release that will have full text to speech, I gave this app a bad review at the beginning, but now that i have used a few times I'd give it a 4 stars
Good review the most balanced and practical review I have seen. I subscribed, I want to see t-s too and a TRIP PREVIEW 2x,4x speed etc. So I have some Idea where I am going. I have Navigon because their 3D graphic (hart of the sys) is the best. They can add the other stuff.
If you start out with a so-so or poor Gengine then what ever you add later U are still behind the 8 ball. I thinkj Mva should keep the price low add T-S & preview and they will lead the Iphone nav mkt into the future.
I was wondering if someone could tell me what's the meaning of Lane Assistant Pro means this would really help. I google it and only coming up with other GPS 's thanks for the help. Great Video
As I understand it, lane assist essentially helps you be in the right lane for an upcoming turn. So, if your exit is on the left, it will alert you to be in the left lane a ways down the road. Thx
I think this is going to be a really big factor whenever the TomTom comes out. If you toss in the window mount, I suspect you'll be able to buy a retail TomTom, probably with a bigger screen. You can free up your phone too. Thanks.
Yeah, I noted that in the video description, and there's a news article describing the update. I don't think any of the changes, however, really affect the review.
Yeah, I'm going it check it out tonight. The issue though that I had is I couldn't easily get an overview of the route, not so much for planning ahead. (like I do that anyway!). So, if I'm going down the freeway, I might want to know my next turn 50 miles down the road so I can just turn it off or just in case I lose GPS. I just like to know my next turn no matter how far away I am.
Keep your hand out of camera view except when you actually need to touch the screen.

Nice app but there's something about it that I don't like. It's kinda sluggish at times. I use it with a 3gs. I'm going to try TomTom.

Can someone help me.
I bought this and used it today, and it would randomly stop voice announcements. I used it with my ipod.
Is there a setting I need to change to make sure I get voice announcements?

actually, you can buy an add on for live traffic updates.

@yourpalcliffy Mapquest 4mobile is free. But it needs your cellphone signal to work and not the GPS signal.

@NetFu
Cheap iphones? They are $500, unless one is starting a new contract and its stll expensive.
Signal reception is NO where near the ability of a dedicated GPS.
Perhaps you live somewhere where the sky is clear and the land is flat.

You know what is funny, Navigon just released a free update TODAY that adds:
- Muting of music (if playing) while it speaks
- POI calling (finally)
- Offline Route Planning (plan ahead)
yuprulesing 2 years ago
Yeah, I noted that in the video description, and there's a news article describing the update. I don't think any of the changes, however, really affect the review.
wwwinsanelygreatmac 2 years ago
The "offline" route planning function you might like that you found lacking in the current version might be cool. You can plan ahead now.
yuprulesing 2 years ago
Yeah, I'm going it check it out tonight. The issue though that I had is I couldn't easily get an overview of the route, not so much for planning ahead. (like I do that anyway!). There is no monthly fee for this, in fact it's on sale till August 30th 2009 for $69 instead of $99.

Yeah, this isn't a subscription. I'm looking at G-Map right now for review.
