  • are you saying that lack of sleep increases appetite and therefore you'll eat more, not the actual lack of sleep itself?

    interesting listening btw!

  • Lack of sleep correlates with increased eating and increased obesity.

I haven't seen a convincing explanation as to why this should be so. It might have something to do with using food to pump blood sugar up temporarily, increasing alertness. It won't stay up long in a normal person, though, so you have to keep eating to gain the benefit.

  • What's your take on MSG.

  • I've talked a bit about it elsewhere in the series. It's bad news.

  • This guy speaks very 'softly' about weight issues. I really appreciate that very much.

  • Those issues are *very* complex... and there are still plenty of scientific unknowns. Anyone who can be arrogant about this subject is probably not a good source.

Thanks for your kind comment. :-)

  • I took neurontin(?) and went from 180 lbs to 260 lbs in about a month. I got off of that asap. Whats funny is I have a very high metabolism and have always been a thin guy. I knew something was wrong when I gained that much weight that quick.

  • That is awfully rapid. But it's not a unique story; lots of people have had that happen.

I was only a bit overweight until I started taking Avandia. Then it just exploded. It's been a real challenge to bring it down while still taking the medication.

  • And my bf says my over sleep is a waste of time. Ha! He doesn't know that sleep helps to loss weight.

My room is at 80 degrees all the times. Many folks who visit my room complain about the temp, but to me it's heaven. Awesome video.

  • Thanks, Juci. :-)

  • Highly informative. You've alerted me to quite a bit of possible problems and suggested alternative means of dealing with these issues. Thanks, Urgelt.

    "cat"

  • Most welcome, Cat. Glad you found it useful. :-)

  • also i had to take birth control pills for hormone problems when i was younger as a teen and i gained a lot of weight!!! it was horrible and i didn't even understand why.

  • Hi, sweetieroses, glad you could drop in. Yes... weight gain is never easy, and when you're a teen it's hitting at a vulnerable time. Thanks for commenting!

  • yes i dont have air conditioning and it is HOT in my house. lol. and thats true that people eat less when they are too hot or cold.

  • I just watched #1-#11 and I want to congratulate you on your thorough and comprehensive approach. I am surprised that our sedentary lifestyle was not considered a risk factor. Did I miss something? FANTASTIC series!

  • Thanks for your comment!

The purpose of the study was to identify possible causes of increased obesity beyond those usually studied. It was an exercise in "thinking outside the box."

But these aren't just wild guesses. There is actual science supporting each proposed cause. It's simply not known to what extent these causes explain the overall trend.

  • I recently did some researches on ecological architecture and within it, also air-conditioning. Your Video points out, that it's not only expensive and irresponsable for the environment, but also simply bad for the people using it. There are many better ways to get a room to the temperature you're comfortable with than wasting energy!

  • Indeed! I'd add that fresh air is sadly lacking in many architectural designs. Toxins from transformers, cleaning solvents, carpet outgassing, and mold in buildings can build up quickly if air isn't aggressively pulled in from outside. Sick buildings, sick people. I think architectural design is an important variable in the health and weight of occupants.

  • I couldn't agree more! Thanks for providing a great channel that helps people with understanding their health.

  • You're most welcome! Thanks for the kind words. :-)

  • Once again, excellent job. I grew up in a house where sleeping 8-9 hours was abhorred. When I was a teenager, I was tired all the time but not allowed to nap or sleep in. My folks to this day think sleep is a huge waste of time, and something only the lazy indulge in. Must be old school mentality. While away at college I recall thinking my bed was the most wonderful place in the world. I wanted to sleep more than just about anything else.

  • I think the harder you work your mind, the more you need adequate sleep. College was like that for me, too. Thanks for commenting!

  • tanks for the advice, I go to count mine case, that proves what you says, had not repaired the relation between sleep and the weight, but now I started to repair in this for i,m fat person more because also I am more time stopped for now I do not have job but repair now I have slept little and this can have helped to get fat

  • Thank you for commenting, ambrosiny. Yes, it's a factor. It's not as important a factor as what you eat, though. Good luck!

  • Understood. It's just an idea, and how important it is as a cause of obesity isn't known anyway.

And though I'm in the South... it's not DEEP South like you. :-)

  • Thank you for another informative video! Before I had my daughter I had a very, very high metabolism and could eat absolutely anything and not exercise too much (just walking at school) and never gain a pound. I gained 60 lbs while I was pregnant and I'm struggling with the last 14 lbs that I can't seem to rid myself of. I don't eat much at all, but definitely don't sleep as much as I need to either.

  • Thanks for the comment, LadySeneca! I agree, we go through changes in life that alter our metabolic balance somehow, and that can catch us by surprise. Hopefully, if we know enough, we'll be enabled to deal with even that last, difficult bit. Good luck!

  • My doctor told me to stay away from the sugary drinks, since Zoloft has already put 2-3 pounds on me. (Whoops.) My mom eats salads all the time and still doesn't lose weight-- she also only gets about 4 hours of sleep every night. I think I sweated off a good 5 pounds walking for over an hour in the heat today. Ick.

  • Hi Angie, thanks for commenting. Yep, I'm always amazed at how diverse people are. I knew a guy once whose metabolism was so high, he could eat *anything* and not get fat. And proved it daily.

Most of your weight loss was just fluids, probably. But it's interesting, isn't it? Extreme temps do have *some* effect. Who woulda thunk it?

  • Anther excellent video. I wonder if my only getting 5 or 6 hours sleep per night is a factor in weight for me. Interesting. It's either that or the potato chips and beer... not sure which. :-)

    Thanks for the information Urgelt.

  • Heh, thanks for commenting, Gr8Shotz. :-)

  • I feel you on the medication side effect of weight gain. My old anti-depressant put 20 lbs. on me in approx. 2 months...not only scary, but ironically, very depressing. I think a lot of people get stuck in that cycle. And about the lack of sleep...well I could do an entire video on that, lol. I enjoyed this one, thanks.

  • Glad you did, snapesiren. Thanks for your comment!

  • Another good video urgelt. I seem to sleep 6hrs on the weekday and I can even hit 12-14hrs on the weekend!! but maybe because im still young...

  • Thanks, ddstar.

That might be enough sleep for you - how much people need varies from person to person. Your body will tell you if it's happy with the sleep it gets.
