@KimuOsama: Morihei Ueshiba, in his search for fighting arts, spent a good time in China and practised with various Taijis Masters. Back in Japan, he developed Aikido which is really based on Taiji. I practised both for years and today still practise the latter. A real martial artist always respect but never degrade another style. That is all I have to say. Respect.
Why does he punch with his fist and not with his wrist (joint)? That is at least the way I was taught when doing this movement and it is quite obvious that this way is right because the joint is much harder and can not break. All in all he seems to be able to fight but his Tai Ji looks rather hard to me and there is no flow.
I don't know if it's that no one gets what you are saying--I believe it is a difference in philosophy. Taijiquan---"Grand Ultimate Fist"--is a martial art. Without knowledge of the applications one is just dancing. If you know the applications and don't practice them--how could you hope to actually use them to defend yourself?
If you don't seek the application/martial history of your art that is fine but I disagree with you saying these gents are wrong for pursuing it.
I met a 70 year old guy in China who'd practiced taiji most of his life. He asked me to bend one of his fingers back to try to break it. I did, and I couldn't, it was like rubber. Taiji excercises the BONES. Without daily practise for several years you won't get it.
Although these two man fighting forms aren't good for the mind.
@Rhizomio How do you exercise bones? If his finger felt like rubber, it was because his tendons and joints allow a lot of movement. The bones themselves don't get more flexible.
@ninjajesus81 Of course the bones don't get flexible : ) but the cartilage and tendons acquire such strength because taijiquan exercises the marrow. "Where blood goes qi follows" and vise versa. A lot of taijiquan is counter-intuitive at first.
@ninjajesus81 It's like if someone says you could build a big tunnel that would make anti-hydrogen you'd say it sounds like hogwash unless you had been involved with or been closely following the project.
So to answer your question, 'What is qi?' It is the limit of your competency in taiji quan.
if you've ever practiced iron hand kung fu you'd know that they teach you to deliver more of a dead slap then you'd normally use for a strong punch, the result being that its faster because of the relaxation of the arm or anything else for that matter.
Regarding the bent wrist everyone seems to have an obsession with... in taijiquan you do not deliver power with brute and obvious muscular force, you use internal force, shaking energy etc, so no, you will not break your wrist, to suggest this, shows a lack of understanding in the internal arts.
I used to train with this guy He's French and is very good he's "CHI" is very powerfull. If he hits you with ANY part of this body, trust he will not hurt himself! Bent wrist or not
Even if he were a mutant and and wouldn't break his wrist, he could have just as easily hit with a proper straight wrist in that situation. There's probably a reason why the wrist is bent in the form, so this application looks pretty suspect to me.

The master's form looks very fluid. He has probably won a gold medal somewhere. However, the applications are suspect. Dan bien as a backhanded wrist flick to the temple? You WILL hurt your wrist. Think again. Looks external. No feeling of internal.
Nice video. Taiji aims at defeating the opponent5 upon 1st contact and it is to do with harmonizing with his force to break his peng jin sphere and destroy his balance. ALl taiji application has this function...try to comprehend that.
Nice looking applications. However, the strike to the neck that looked like "single whip" would have resulted in a broken / sprained wrist if applied at full speed. You are supposed to srike with the wrist bone, not the back of the hand at that angle.
in taiji the application is that one flows with the strike in almost a circular motion thus the flow isnt broken when it makes contact it rolls off the body when it makes its contact. If in fact he were to hit the guy straight on then yes he'd break his wrist, however i would assume by seeing what his skill looks like now, he wont make such a mistake.
Nice applications! If you have time, please put up a video of yourself doing them against someone attack with speed and power and resisting them. That would be lots of fun.

以柔克刚 缓慢的动作时而带有意想不到的快速动作
太极拳乃中国第一武术 其二当是少林的功夫
不过要练好也很难啊 要有一定的集中力看清对手的招数用速度快却可化刚的力量还击......难哦~

So why is he using a bent wrist? Chick points?
Even if he were a mutant and and wouldn't break his wrist, he could have just as easily hit with a proper straight wrist in that situation. There's probably a reason why the wrist is bent in the form, so this application looks pretty suspect to me.
