  • thank you very much it works

  • I really don't understand why they crashes... I have a Dell Latitude D620 + nVIDIA Quadro with the same problem... I think it's a flow of design. Probably the next notebook will be with integrated gfx... sutch as i3 / p6xxx etc.

  • Nice fix

  • disliked due to horrible loud music. why do you not talk and explain what you are doing,

  • this kind of heating is bad.youhave to heat only the glass temp not all the bga.

  • 2 weeks and counting, no problems yet !

    :-)

  • Hint for less heat gun sessions: flux, dudes! Put some liquid flux to prevent oxidizing the Sn balls. ;)

    Cheers!

  • My 1330 was dead. i tryed this and to my big surprise it worked :-)

Keep you up to date for how long this works.

  • No offense man but I shut off your vid and left your page as soon as I saw you write "I can't afford to "loose it" for a few days." Those quotes make no sense and as an adult you should know the difference between lose and loose. I would correct that or you might "loose" some views. :)

  • My Dell Vostro 1510 has the same chip (nVidia 8400M GS) and before the problem happen I fixed it. I used a thin plate of silver between the GPU and heatsink with Arctic Silver 5, after remove the termal compound (the blue thing). And the chip's temperature never exceeded 65º C.

  • Same thing with my Fujitsu Siemens Amilo PA2548, first time I heated it lasted about 2 months until failed again, more heat and now it barely lasted 1 month. So do not let your hopes up with this "fix" even if it seems to work at first... I guess this junk is scrap metal.

  • eu am un dell d620 imi apare o dunga pe ecran si imi tremura imaginea dar daca il pun la un lcd separat de vede bine ...eu ce ar trebui sa fac astept measajele pe adylov2006@yahoo.com

  • It really angers me how badly designed these machines cooling systems are.

  • bloody2k: how long did this fix last?

  • thanx...i fix it... :)

  • my laptop is a d630 and i recently replaced the gma x3100 board with a refurbished nvidia quadro nvs 135m mobo. mainly for better gaming performance and because i had some issues with the other mobo. i heard that its a fail prone card so i replaced the thermal pad with a penny with thermal paste on both sides but i overclock it so if it ever fails im gonna use my moms hair dryer to try and fix it.

  • ooo i sold my dell xps m1530...and i am more happy now :)

  • I work at a service center, electronics engineer. I can only say that serious repair centers refuse to fix such models, because in some cases there are no new chips available to replace them. And they don't even think risking their reputation with heating fix.

  • thanks man you helped me big time, new motherboard would be like 400 €

  • totally unprofessional...how long do you think that solder will last?

  • @XTYNoLuck Why isn't this unprofessionnal ? This repair is perfectly valid. I've repaired tens of devices with failing solder joints using a similar repair method (I even have the same soldering station & soldering iron :))

  • @uski01 why? because...1. you extract the motherboard, you preheat it, you remove the gpu, clean the pads, you reball the gpu, you preheat the motherboard again, and resolder the freshly reballed gpu...i might have missed some steps, but you get the point....i was just saying that this method might be the fastest, but not the most reliable...

  • @XTYNoLuck ok, you're right. Actually since my previous message, I repaired a laptop using the method on this video. It did work, but it's true it might have been more reliable to reball the GPU. Thanks for the info.

  • @uski01 actually it would be good, but only good enough, so you can never guarantee on reflow procedures.

  • Comment removed

  • @uski01 rofl, i cant believe that there still are people around thinking that it is a problem of bad soldering between gpu - board. unbelievable. These Nvidia chips fail inside, between silicon crystal and chip base. And heating restores them temporarily. It is not a permanent fix, same goes about reballing.

  • @makstukas You mean the bonding between the chip and the case fails?

  • @uski01 the extremely technical explanation is here if you are interested, put why-nvidia-chips-defective keyword in google, first link, enjoy

  • my laptop always start up failed..even i everday i fix the start up repair...someone..please help me..SOS..

  • cool lines lol i guess not so cool when its urs lol

  • the GPU i bought with for the computer i was building today was faulty. Pissed me off so bad. It was an Nivida gtx 560 btw

  • whats the reflow temp?

  • i might try this.

BUT, it really is a temporary fix.

The problem, if its overheating will the lack of reasonable cooling to the northbridge chip and the nvidia chip. those 'thermal conducting' sponges look like rubbish. any premium performing system should use copper and thermal paste.

on ebay there appears to be people selling kits to repair and improve the cooling on this unit. copper shims and more. worth a look. im still looking at best options.

don't want a wasted laptop on my hands

  • nice job!!! a useful tip for all!!!!

  • You saved my xps laptop, Thanks.... :-)

  • It worked on my Vaio using a hair dryer.. thank you a lot..

  • Worked for me too! With just 30 secs with a hair-drier, max heat, 3 cm. close through a GPU chip sized window cut in a cardboard. 24 hours later, still working. However, I haven't tested it with high 3D or video action.

  • Fixed my XPS m1530 that wouldn't boot up (power light, hard drive would spin, but no boot) with a blow dryer. Opened the panel on the back, removed the heat sink, blow dryed the GPU for a couple of minutes and now it works perfectly.

  • Maaaaaaaaaaaaaan! Would I believe something like this? NOOO! Would I try it? NOOOO! But I DID! :))) And it DID worked!!! With hair-dryer, first for 2-3 minutes, with no result and then for 5 minutes on maximum heat. That made it work! Thanks!!!! But to be sure, I took out my CMOS battery, that was really close to it, Memory slots and also HDD, and opened away screen to keep them from overheating Again, great advice!
  • @sinisarudan I already have as an engineer of 23 years standing ,by trade and yes it does work but it is temporary. Having said that you can get lucky and it will work for quite a while. It is NOT repeat NOT down to the chip overheating either. It is because they took all the lead out of the soldering technique used, some time back. Now with PGA / BGA chips the don't stick to the board as well as they once did - simple as that

  • @computersolutions164 you are wrong. nvidia chip failures are a totally different problem, it is NOT because leadless soldering.

  • @makstukas I think you'll find the Gazillions of people who have had this problem, many of them have solved the problem by heating the board - it works if you are careful about it. I got the info from a fellow engineer of 30 odd years standing, so sorry to disappoint you but I really do not think I am wrong as it happens. I have fixed several this way, without too many problems.

  • @computersolutions164 Huh? I didn't say that heating doesn't restore the functionality for some time, I said it restores them for some time, but it is not a proper fix. Anyway, the most hilarious thing to me in all of this, is when i read about people reballing these failing chips, thinking that the problem lies in the poor contact with the board, while really the temporary fix trick happens just because of the heat the chip coincidentally receives while going through the reballing procedure...

  • Cheers man.

  • best movie..worth to watch it in webmovietube

  • you are not professionnel

  • GreenEyes797979, you need to DROP IT!... You need to take those 'green eyes' of yours, and 'get lost'!

At LEAST I actually LEARNED how to repair my Compaq F700, by using THIS VIDEO!... (and she still WORKS, after NINE MONTHS)... Yeah, THAT'S RIGHT!!!!

Thank you Bloody2K, for your INCREDIBLE WORK.

P.S. "Hey GreenEyes797979.... we can SEE that YOU spelled: "Professional"... WRONG... So go and get a F-ing Life!!!

  • WORKED!! Thanx man! I used hair-drier. First time i warmed for 30 sec. on distance about 10 centimetres from chip (3.9 in) and it worked but only for 5 minutes, than random pixels returned. Than I did it for 2-nd time and this time I warmed for 2 min and the distance to chip was 1 centimetre (0.4 in I guess). Works for 12 hours allready with no problems.

  • We should seriously all sue Dell for this epic disaster they conjured up

  • I used a hairdryer at maximum heat, and the gray paste on the right mostly melted. My dell m1330 also only worked for 10 minutes without any 3d programs. And i am sure that i have the same problem as you.

So what do i do now???

  • how long did this fix last for you.

  • nhkjlnjl

  • holy crap, i just tried this on my dell xps m1530 and it worked! thank you!

  • you are the MAN!!!!

    7. Remember how to turn caps lock off

    8. Realise that due to points 1-6 you now have a shit product and lose money like its going out of fashion

    9. Never ever make an insane comment on youtube again

  • this crap music made me stop watching your video :(

  • @anothershakey There is a mute button you know... -_-

  • temporary fix noob jooob

  • @underbirdgsm

well if you think you can do a better mother Fucking job then why don't you mother fucking stop haten and do it! make a video and let some one else Sh!t talk you. Bitch

  • @Browmj84 he did a good job i think. hes just mad cuz really it is a temp fix. did this with a heatgun on my t61 and it only worked for a week. play couple hours of games and you will be back to where you were.

  • very good tutorial but This is called Reflow, it works but won't last more than few days before the same problem returns, I carry the Long Term repair on this model with Reballing if any is intrested check out my videos. I can even change the chip with the upgraded 2010 model which doesn't develop these issues.

  • @reply4reply If done properly, reflow can be a permanent or at the very least, long term fix.

  • Is that guy for real keep the jobs in the US tell him to go jump. Great Video apart from the fool.

  • awesome, this worked like a charm. was just about to order a new laptop until i tired this out.

  • Thank god I have ATI Radeon

  • @Smola666 haha yeah but when this happens to ATI it CANT be fixed :)

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @Forfaxify yes, you can do the same too, I fixed like +20 ATI chipset and actually I did the same on the graphic card for desktops.

  • Hmm, would work a lot better with liquid no clean flux.

Also, there are a raft of nvidia chips with inherent defects. If anyone in the uk has one you can get your money back or a brand new latop even if the 1 year warranty has expired!!

  • thanks a lot bro, you help a lot of people to save from expensive dell services...

  • I walk around video suggestion or what ever, all come nVidia, so i think nVidia on Laptop very lame one

  • What about the tiny ceramic capacitors on the chip board - don't they de-solder and wipe off accidentally? Thanks!

  • hey Thank you sooo much u save me and my friend life man!! i try ur solution and it work perfectly but i didnt use a hot air soldering tool, instead i use a blow torch haha lol... Thx again!!

  • Actually Ben what is shit is the way they are installed with lead free solder, the lack of cooling applied and the way that the manufactures evade the issue by making re-placeable 'graphics cards' (No names mentioned - ASUS!) to save themselves money if the board fails during warranty.

In fact Nvidia supply full fitting requirements of their chipsets when they are sold but these are often not adhered to due to manufactures wanting to keep laptops thin and lightweight to make saleable.

  • It's just a temporary fix. I did this to my M1330 laptop and it works for awhile, but eventually the problem returns. I have done this for the seventh time now.

  • it's cool how you got the music in this video in sync with the startup boot!

  • My 8800GT (G92) chip, died 2 times. Mine came with my vostro 410 desktop.

    WHATTAHELL

  • These nVidia GPUs are shit. So unreliable its pathetic!

  • @ben150785 nah, rather the slder that is used is being pathetic, since no more lead is allowed in solder, most GPU cant stand a lot of heat anymore. Solder with lead cant withstand it quite decently. Same problem is occuring on the PS3. a permanent fix is reballing which replaces the leadless solder with leadcontaining solder.

  • just teporary solution, u must reball the gpu....loll noob

  • i have this problem ( watch?v=1eC4vSKBSsU&feature=related ) any help pls.

  • Good job! That fix will last a week, a real professional.

Stop messing around and use new chips instead. G86-631 for the M1330, will last a few years again.

  • I wouldn't say this will fix your card, instead. I've got myself a mini-bake method that doesn't require soldering tool. But you'll need some guts. This is what i did:

    1) take out your GPU heatsink

2)turn on your laptop for a while, as for me the artifact went crazy/different after after 2 minutes, and after restarting a couple of times, it went normal again

    3) at this point, run speedfan/temp monitor in ur OS, and "mini bake" at 100'C for 30 mins

    4) reassemble your heatsink

    5) stress GPU

  • it prob overheats cuz heres 3 chips and gpu is to far away from fan

  • Fing awesome!!! i fix my xps like that!!! cheers man

  • Hot air should be done with the board out of the case for preheating first (preferably mounted and bolted down to flast solid surface) to prevent popcorning/delamination of PCB. Also, there should definitely be no wires/battery so close to a chip you're reflowing as seen (and to be safe, unplug cmos battery). The nozzle used is too narrow and so air pressure is higher than with a wider nozzle and you risk having small parts fly off. Also lookup liquid flux for anti-oxidization in reflow. cheers

  • Let's evaluate this video for a minute. A lot of things were done wrong. The heat he's using is inconsistent. He's waving that heat gun around like a magic want. All that's doing is temporarily displacing the bga spheres - and they WILL lose contact again. Just put a DVD in and run it for a few hours - it'll die - I guarantee it.

There's a good Q & A at PrecisionDivision . com that explains why you shouldn't use heat guns, loose change or other household appliances to "fix" motherboards.

  • @geeksarenotcool: And what do you recommend? A $36,000 reflow soldering station? My car isn't even worth a tenth that. How do you suppose I do surface-mount soldering then? I don't? That's not gonna happen.

  • @roothorick i just got mine in the mail today. It's called the 898d+ and it was $120 on ebay with free shipping. I don't see why you would have to spend so much. This one is sweet, and I've been playing with it all day.

  • @geeksarenotcool

One is supposed to move the nozzle around the edges of the chip to evenly heat all the solder points underneath the BGA (ball-grid-array) chip. It is not "displacing" anything, simply "reflowing" the solder points which have broken over time from heat on the dreaded RoHS (lead-free) solder. Ideally, liquid flux should be pre-applied underneath for anti-oxidization during reflow.

This is not "heat gun", it is an "SMD rework station". Please check your facts prior to posting.

  • @geeksarenotcool Totally, I tried this soldering method. Epic failed. My method of mini-bake works. I stressed my GPU while overclocking it, and it's still kicking

  • boolshit temporary fix. amateur job

  • Wow - thank you so much! I just used my wife's hairdryer and mended this in about 5 minutes. It's the first time I have pulled a computer apart, but was happy to have a go. The hardest thing was locating the correct chip - as it was in a different location as I have a DELL XPS M1530. Thank you so much my man - I was quoted £400 repair from Dell, £350 locally and on eBay they offer to repair this for £70 - I guess they do what you do! THANKS!!!

  • does this work on integrated graphics too?

  • Hi,

what the temp setting on the hot air station?

  • @longbowlongbow about 350°C

  • This was the WORST PC I ever purchased. It was non stop problems from start to end. The item overheated and broke down constantly. In the end Dell replaced it, and the second one broke down with the same problem after just four months. I stopped using it and then contacted Dell last week. They are sending someone to change the motherboard again. I would NEVER buy another Dell product. I regret spending my hard earned money on this junk.

  • i would say the official success rate is 56/65. since 9 ppl disliked this video

  • wow got my working with a weller torch lighter after watching this video fucking cool thank you very much

  • Клипът е много полезен за хора с такива проблеми! Благодаря за клипа!

  • Whatsamattah?

    You not like plaid screens?

Boy, you would hate the 70's then....

  • Hi, can anyone tell me how much temp shud i set and how long i have to keep hot air gun over the chip? thx in advance

  • Great if you know which chip has raised

  • I guess a Video Response takes time? I'm new to all this. Here's the direct link to a mod after you've done bloody2k's mod and the copper mod.

Hmm.. no links here? Well, my video is up and I guess you'll have to click on my name or whatever to see it ( and an interesting video of a Mumbai ferris wheel from my travels ).

  • Mate, my Dell Vostro 1310 notebook blue-screened 3 days ago after 2 years faithful service, then screen repeatededly died (vertical lines) over next few days until it was unbootable. Then I discovered via Google the long running issue with Nvidia chips. Then today I discovered this tube. Three goes with the wife's hair dryer and the notebook is as good as new (for now anyway). Cheapest and fastest fix ever - thanks bloody2k - great video and comments.

  • Comment removed

  • accidentally removed my comment... but as promised I've posted the video response with my experimental hack to do after bloody2k's and the coppermod.

  • hi that apply to a gpu nvidia for desktop (9800gt Efficient Power) after a while stop working and all thte pc freezes

  • It worked!!!

  • this is never permanent, its just a temporary fix which actually ruins your chipset

have it reballed is the permanent fix

  • U know what have You done? In that time You didn't even heat the chip - i've tried with 380C for around 2min and it's impossible to heat solder under the chip. You HAVE to use preheat table. Since i bought one, there's no need even for hot-air. Turn on, wait for solder around chip to melt, touch the chip, turn off and all. Works allways and permanent! Reason why Your repair isn't premanent is because re-installing cooling pushes chip down, making pads contact.. dor short time period...

  • @TomashPL58 what do you mean by preheat table can you explain in detail and whats the brand name and how to use it.

  • I nowadays have a Nootebook Cooler ZM-NC1500 from Zalman, but still operation temperature lies between 55C to 85C or so...

You might guess that I Don't game anymore...

  • @salmiak911 open the laptop up and clear out the dust bewteen the heatsink and the fan

  • Thanks for the Video, but I saw it too late.

I bought a computer and used a cheap "CPU FAN" from Chlaes Ohlsson (from Insjön, but made in china) because I though that my Laptop was to hot. Only 7 months after I bought the Laptop it burned out.. I did send my computer (A HP pavilon dv2880eo or something, worst cooling system in history...) for a guaranty repair, they switched out the whole base and said it was the worst thing they had seen.. HP sucks, normal op temp for my Laptop is 87C..

  • This didn't work for me, probably because my GPU is too shot. Has anyone actually done a swap of the Intel based board for the NVIDIA board? I hate to just put another NVIDA board in, and have it fail in a few months. You can't get extended warranties, even from dell on replacement parts.

  • Thanks for posting this video. Doing this combined with doing the brass spacer mod seems to have at least temporarily resurrected my M1330. It's a shame that this laptop has this defect, it's otherwise such a nice unit.

  • I wish rather than advising us to "fix" this problem you instead suggested that we mount a campaign against laptop manufacturers like HP, Compaq and Dell for releasing seriously low quality goods. This kind of shit didn't happen 3 to 4 years ago.

  • Try my copper shim to lower your gpu temps 15%. It is only $7 and comes with thermal paste free. Search for "M1330 copper shim" on ebay.

  • What's the name and model of your rework station?

  • Usually Dell does in home service for these units. Just FYI. I work technical support.

  • @TimLenhartTech Hi can you tell me how to organise this...mine is on it's way and I noticed that Dell were extending their warranty for NVIDIA prob...Tx

  • @azzekezza as long as it is still within warranty. Just call DELL

  • maaaan... it works, in thirth time when i heated it very much with a hairdryer... damn man... u r an angel

  • buy intel gpu motherboard instead of Nvidia gpu. You only need to buy different fan or cut the old fan with metal saw. All Nvidia 8400, 8600, and some 8800,9600, 9400,9800gt, are defected

  • this is reflow, its never permanent. just waiting for your next video when you'll say "it happened again"

  • It worked for me (on a XPS m 1530), at least for now! I had completely blank screen no colour stripes, nothing. I did it using my gas-powered soldering iron. I removed the tip and pointed the flame on to the chip for a few seconds.

  • Now THIS is a Video that I 'could not help' but watch over & OVER!!!

GREAT JOB!!! (Although my FIRST VIDEO) - uh -

"Another Plan B at the Jo" - (DID NOT WORK)

Well, I was trying to 'mount' a SATA-HD to a PATA; with a CONVERTER, but I don't know WHAT the problem was. So; I decided to replace the motherboard altogether....

  • it worked!!! yes ty after many tries

  • all you guys don't know anything, the permanent fix is reballing this is just reflow "temporary fix" which sometimes works sometimes not. reballing is the only permanent fix. 2:39 bubbled chip from overflow.

  • Thnx to the buddy who have uploaded this idea, i have fixed my DEL XPS 1330 Laptop's Graphic Chip by doing so. This Video was really helpful while i was fixing my Laptop... So once again thanx buddy. I'm really grateful to you......

  • hi, how can i see the video card temperature?

  • Excellent! Works in my Dell XPS M1710 :-D, NVidia GeForce GO 7900 GS

  • We used a modified heat gun nozzle from a standard milwalkee heat gun and an air compressor nozzle to heat the chip.. we did it for about 12 seconds on high, and it fixed what wold have been 600 from dell and no guarantees etc..

  • NICE IDEA

  • omg it worked... i had to blast it like 5 times but just as i was about to give up hope it turned on and worked without a hitch

  • ok i didn't believed until i did it.... i had nothing to lose plus i saved my self +150 bucks for a mother board. heey i have that rework station :) got it from sparkfun

  • yes it works! But only 4 two days :( i was so happy to have my baby back and now i have the same problem again :( so sad

But thanks 4 the video! i had two wonderful days :D

  • WORKKKKKK PACKARD BELL SJ81 HELL YEAA

  • Hey,

I just wanted to thank you for your advice. This is another confirmation that this solution at least temporarily fixes the problem. I used a travel hairdryer on max heat for about 3-5 mins and I haven't experienced any problems since. :D

You are an absolute lifesaver, my XPS had this issue appear a couple days after I made the last payment on it :P

    Cheers

  • Please what is the name of this song! ?

  • doesn´t works for me, think twice before do this, was worse for me

  • I did this unusual heating gpu on the laptop a good month ago and all has been working fine up until a few days ago when the vertical lines appeared again. I re-heated the GPU again and all is working, so this is not a complete fix, the only way to fix this issue with the gpu is by having the intel gpu which means a complete replacement on the motherboard.

  • paste a copper cover over it with the help of thermal Glue...am gonna do this soon ;)...i hope it'll work it out

  • just wanna say your method work perfect for me after this i just use the copper mod and its good thanks bloody2k

  • We've tried this repair before without success but we think this video's music made all the difference. SUCCESS! Got to love rework stations!

Make sure you remedy your heat situation after this fix though otherwise it'll just reproduce the problem again. BIOS update, cooling pads, etc. are best.

  • Sooo....anyone can open his laptop and blow on the graphic card to repair it? hella wierd??

  • my laptop dose't switch on . can any one help me ?

    ?

  • Battery -_-

  • lol :P nice idea :P

  • i highly doubt that was the same exact laptop

  • Comment removed

  • it helps for few days only ! lier !!!

  • Nice think with my m1710 was the videocard was a seperate board. Easy enough to pull it out and stick it in the oven @ 300F for 3 min a side.

  • what is the name of the song?

  • Comment removed

  • I just did it using a hair dryer on hot/low for about 3min and it worked! I removed the keyboard, WLAN, RAM, HD, CPU, unplugged the LCD cables from the motherboard, and moved over the WIFI cables just in case it got too hot. Plastic can melt. Thanks for the post lets see how long this will last.

  • @pike99b is your Xps m1330 still working i got mine laptop fucked wana try ur solution as I dnt have heat gun too

  • mine is working now,
