Interesting to note how these American news releases always tape american engine sounds over British Merlins. They did it on Battle of Britain footage too, over a squadron of Spitfires taking off. I wonder if the sound of the more powerful Merlin engines upset their sensibilities somehow?

@Aco1890 - Coventry was indeed a beautiful medieval city (perhaps like Lubeck?) whose ancient crafts had evolved into light engineering etc thus making it a target.Unlike London or Cologne, her cathedral did not survive.We all lost much during those terrible times.My aunt had German POWs working on her farm.Two were "very nice young men", one remained a Nazi.My dad was RAF but after WW2 he was involved in Berlin Airlift & transporting German goods around Germany (just incase you are interested).

@jrwel14- I've only read this bombing of Freiburg was a navigational error (by about 30 miles as they were aiming for Mulhouse).If the highly experienced Luftwaffe could make such mistakes in daylight over a short distance what chance had the RAF in 1940 of greater accuracy?

Sir Arthur Harris and his brave Airmen saved many Allied lives, and broke German morale. Of the 1000 bomber raids, only Cologne was a success (?). Essen & Bremen were not. But Harris wanted a 'show of force'. This was acheived, despite its failure!

For starters the RAF only dropped 45% of its bombs on cities during WWII, 55% went to percision raids. Secondly US "Percision" bombing was massive inaccurate, precision in name always. 50% of all raids the bombs were dropped through cloud cover.

Albert Speer himself said RAF night raids were more accurate and damaging than USAAF day raids, due to the navigation aids the RAF used, as well as the larger bombs.

It matters because the persistent myth about bomber command only bombing cities and killing civilians tarnishes the actual contribution of bomber command to defeating Nazi Germany.

Bomber command did many "percision" raids one air superiority was established, though technology at the time meant massive collateral damage regardless.

The info about the US bombing ratios can be found in the Osprey Halifax series. The 45% is from a recent book on Bomber Command, I think "flying with the nachtjager" or whatever the German word is for nightfighter or the army of the Luftwaffe that flew at night.

Precision bombing during WW2 was an American propaganda myth. American bomb sights were no more accurate than British. The only way to hit a target was to flatten the whole area.

The RAF Bomber command lost a higher percentage of personnel than any other allied military arm. '55,573 killed out of a total of 125,000 aircrew ' - Wikipedia. German, Italian and Japanese governements can be considered as "evil", but the only thing most of the people did wrong was to be born on the wrong side. OK. At this stage of the war, I suppose you could justify such a raid. I'm sure the Germans would have done the same, if the could have. This does not mean that people nowadays should gloat over what happened to the poor people in these raids. I think the reason for this raid was to win the war, rather than pure hatred of Germany, which was the case in Dresden. Using the Holocaust as an excuse is not right. Both Dresden and the Holocaust were attrocities. Most would agree with this.
