  • love the thumb nail awesome video game architecure

  • no offense but these games look exactly the same

  • sorry i wanted to write 99.999

  • I'm the 999.999 viewer o.O

  • C++ and XNA together for anyone who would like to begin game development, you can make xbox 360 games and pc games and even mobile games(its free), read C++ books bout programming and game programing and learn how game engines work to advance your knowledge in programming. to make it look good, if you enjoy 3d animation, art, graphic design, design, would help tons for you indie game developers, recommend 3DS max, maya, (the autodesk series) it seems most popular, or use blender.

  • haha! i remember playing that in Gunman! great job!

  • Minecraft has better graphics!

  • @xxELFOXYxx you mean that shitty pixel game?

  • @RobloxDrifter1123 If its so shitty why did you buy it?

  • @MrBigdog320 I didn't and nice job assuming i bought it,idiot.

  • @RobloxDrifter1123 Well its on your you tube page

  • @RobloxDrifter1123 It's better looking than the games that were shown.

  • WOo 10 years of looking down that barrel, have fun!

  • this is awsome did u do this by Yourself

  • LAst, MineCraft... See it in a funny way!

  • hi very good video.i would like to start getting to game developement what programs would you reccommend using to get started and were to learn game programming language like i know a bit of java language like solving maths problems etc..any advice be great

  • @TheParkourKing123 Please read the comments on the video. I am not a programmer, so I can not recommend any programming programs or curriculum.

  • @rainyn what program did you use to create all them

  • @TheParkourKing123 Game Maker and Unity 3D are GREAT for getting started as a programmer.

Game Maker is easier to learn, but it's 3D engine sucks, it's language is exclusive to Game Maker (GML, but after you learn the logic of programming the syntax is easy for other languages anyway), and you can only export to .exe

Unity 3D is harder to learn than game maker, but it supports C# and Javascript (popular game development languages), has a great 3D engine, and has a built in physics engine.

  • @TheParkourKing123

I would recomend starting off with game maker pro and just going through some toutorials for it on you tube till you get the hang of things

dont expect to make great games with that program but its still a very good learning tool

after you have got the hang of that i would recomend getting the basic version of 3D game studio you can make some very cool games quite easily with that program

i would also recomend learing python

    its a simple scripting system

  • pretty nice

  • quake 1 was so badass.

  • Your game theme and design is very good

  • your game looks awesome

  • Nice work!

Could you put in a good word for me with your former employers? Tell them I taught you everything you know.

  • @foreign96man Now that would just reinforce their reasoning for letting me go, now wouldn't it.

  • Purple MonChiChi!??!?!?!

  • Wow, illigally using other cowpony names as his own..

  • Hello, i want to know how can i start scripting on unity 3d, i know 0% of scripting, so how can i learn it? (best software to practice/best websites to get started, and i really need a list of "commands" like what each symbol do, like // or ( ), i want to begin whit javascript )

  • @DarkM1k4 Well dont begin there way to hard with no knowledge try LibertyBasic it runs BASIC scripting language Title says it all BASIC :)

  • @DarkM1k4 I'm sorry, but I also don't know anything about scripting beyond the "Lua" scripting language name. The last "scripting" work I did was with the Source Engine in 2005 and that doesn't involve learning any languages - only learning the Hammer Editor.

  • WHERE IS HALO: COMBAT EVOLVED:O:O:O

  • The further the video gets the graphics get better =P

  • very impressive ^^

  • awesome work, I remember making half life maps in worldcraft when I was 14 lol.

I am currently doing a university degree in computer games technology, and this stuff is inspirational even if my course is pretty much c# programming based. what you working on at the moment?

  • whats the game called

  • Your style is really distinct and gives a really strong appeal. Its seems to be a very unique sci-fi/fantasy hybrid architecture work you've been doing.

  • some people dont know the diference between a game designer and a graphical designer

  • they look like the turok fo n64 or hex fo n64

  • it took you 10 years to make this shit?

  • @ClubPenguinMovies123 Dude Quake started the goddamn gaming generation , without this there would be no Garrys Mod or Team Fortress 2, you have NO idea what you just said.

  • @ClubPenguinMovies123

someone who's name is "clubpenguinmovies" doesn't deserve to even have a say in what he plays

    in short

    shut the fuck up

  • @ClubPenguinMovies123 It didn't take 10 years to make it. It is the overview of 10 years of work. Half life, and Quake to this date are revered as some of the Best Video Games of All Time. If you think... Club Penguin is good, then play one of these classics. Your balls will implode.

  • Typically, games are harder to make than people think they are. So you, poncecoolx, are ahead of the curve.

  • it looks like runescape but cooler. make like onnline play and play with other people that would be beast.

  • You might have to make the music or any other necessary fillers but what you have here is level design. I don't see you adding new code for player interaction. I have less than 10 years experience with level design programs and I'm not impressed at all. Just not. I've made levels far more complex and great looking than these.

  • half life was and is just wow

  • you just waste 10 years of your life to make this corny game ill do better

  • @mrgamerhunter My IQ just took quite a hit. Why did I scroll down? I should know not to scroll down to the comments on public videos. And to the uploader: That outdoor UT 2004 map is awesome, you should recreate something similar to it in Killing Floor (which also runs on Unreal Engine 2.5). Wish I could map in Unreal or Source, but all my time lately has gone into modelling.

  • It uses the Hl1 engine, easy to make a game out of:D Eaven when hl1 came out:D

  • You sir, are very skilled and creative.

  • Thumbs up to you mate , Thumbs up

  • old times.....good times...

  • AWESOME!

  • Wasn't half life made by Valve?

  • @beethoven8977 Right

  • @beethoven8977 Yessir it was.

  • this shit took 10 years? omg i can make better shit than that in 2 yrs.

  • @tja17736

Shut up you stupid prick. If we went back to NINTEEN NINETY SIX, you wouldn't be able to do SHIT.

rainyn, you are epic! - QUAKE FTW

  • @joeyc2410 i know graphics have advanced a lot. but still.....10 fucking years? mario kart 64 is wayyyyyy better and i took like 3 yrs

  • @joeyc2410 Quake is one of the most awesome games ever. There are so many more "beautiful" games out there, but there's just something timeless about the game. You might be interested in the book "Masters of Doom," which chronicles the rise of id software's John Carmack and John Romero as they began designing games - it covers Wolfenstein, Doom 1 and 2, and Quake, and then follows John as he goes on to make Daikatana.

  • @tja17736 You suck donkey balls, STFU!

  • @QUATR00 only you would say that. have a cock tail reasently bitch?

  • @tja17736 How about some English lessons after you're done with the damn donkey, retard?

  • @tja17736

ohhh will you just buger off shit, just staple ur fucking ugly nasty bitching mouth shut no1 want to hear ur fake ass yapping btw if u reply im just gonna delete the message without viewing it soo go fuck ur ugly mother and make her pregnant you dumb noob....

  • Imagine programming mental gear solid 4 or shenmue...imagine the patience on both of those.......AHHHHH!

  • omg dude your the quake maker!!!!! i love this game so much T_T

    TY!!!!!!!!

  • omg nice man :D

i using unity do you heart about it??

can you tell me where you get al those texture's from??

  • Wich program did you use to make this? :o Its verry nice !

  • Where's Bionicle Heroes?! I LOVE that game!

    P.S.

Take some less violent games. :^)

  • Quality is too bad, and the choice of games is poor (just shooters)

  • @funkster505 They are not mutually exclusive, so no. First person shooters are computer games, but not all computer games are first person shooters. Saying this video is about computer game design does not imply that all games are first person shooters just because that's all I chose to showcase in this particular video. It just happens to be most of what I have done in the past.

  • took u 10 years to do that!?

  • @kingrpa3000 Yeah, my computer is so slow it took ten years to transcode the video.

  • thats not half life

  • theese are awesome games, but a little old games :) nice vid

  • Hey rainyn have you ever heard of a Quake II modder who went by the name Major Bitch?

  • @peblairman I don't think so, though I did know some modders back in the day that were female - most were pretty feisty :-) Any of them could have had an alias like that.

  • what types of programms do you reccomend i use to make an game from scratch however i would prefer to start with some type of game engine

  • i would recommend visual c++ and if you want to make it off a engine i would use the Blender3D engine. Btw its not that easy to get into.

  • dude when i am done with coledge i am going to make the biggest gun ever!! well its my dream and to make a mmo rpg and i hope i can do it. what program did you use to make these games?? can i download it???

  • he didn't make any of those

  • The monster at the start, is a boss from Quake...

  • crap

  • half life zombie at the start....-.-

  • @mylesro2 That's not a HL headcrab zombie. :/

  • BUUUT GUNMAN IS A MOD OF GOLDSOURCE

  • WHAT? YOU DIDNT INVEnT THE HEADCRAB? GTFO

  • thanks for the tips in the description , great work

  • I love the classic games they just have that "umph" to them

  • seriously guys imagine making a game like that all by yourself AND it was like 1995 or something it takes alot of patience to do it like anyone else (accept maybe some of you) actually made a game i have not so i think it would be very hard :D

  • @poncecoolx Patience was needed a lot more back in the 90s when computers were so slow! There were a lot of things that simply were not possible on a typical home computer - scanning in large images, compiling large levels, running more than one professional-grade program (photoshop, 3ds max, a game engine, etc). It took many hours just to compile one game level only to discover the lighting was incorrect or the geometry was messed up. Yes, lots of patience needed.

  • He started in 1996 how do you think graphics were in that time?

  • wow has shit graph, and u can't even write english so ur just a fake 9years old kid -.-'

  • Your dumb. In 1996 there wasn't even graphics like GTA 4. Graphics doesn't makes the game.

  • the graphic have come a long step and its still going

  • Are you Hired? :p

Hehe, would like to hire you. I'm working on my own Game Egine. But it will take a lot of time before I even can think of making some more advanced levels.

I'll see what to do when the engine is ready.

  • can you imagin if your computer fried with all of that and had no back up disk. =P

  • haha true that would suck will bad

  • nice

  • LMFAO... i just thought to myself

if i ever made a game... and a level be super hard... id prolly not try and beat it the 2nd time... id go back and fix it hahaha...

  • Did you work on Quake?!

  • I didn't work on the development team that made the game, but I did work as a modder quite a bit back in the mid 90s. I assume that's not your only question - read the info bar to the right to find out more.

  • Awesome.

  • Game Design isn't a guy who actually "make" the environment or graphics or anything. He "plans" the game, thinking of all the game systems and so on. Just saying because it seems you think game design is graphic design =)

  • o.o cool

  • whot will happen after 20?

  • THen you can't tell the difference between games and real life...

Can't wait for this time.. :p

  • Gunmail? I always had a feeling name was gunman! i have Hl and Gun"mail"

  • you mine well... pass me a game maybe?

  • there are a number of people that are on a team that create the game. No, you dont need to draw to become a game designer, thats why there are artist, but it helps to understand everything, before you get to far ahead of yourself and find yourself telling everyone to do impossible things.

  • Cool What program did u use

  • wow lol before the video came up i thought half life 1 lol

  • do you need to know how to draw to be a game designer or can you just make the story lines?

  • To be game designer in a real studio today it's not necessary to know how to draw... But you must have profond understanding of all concept behind the production of a game.

Technical restriction (engine, code, software used, etc..), have a strong management skill (fit art, design, debug in a specified timeline).

  • Thanks, but isnt that more like a video game programmer or technical director?

  • Well, it depends of the company philosophy but if you want to write down a solid design that won't be changed over time because some things can't be made with the current technology and within the current deadline, you must be aware of all constraint and understand what every element in your design require in time/resources. That can be based on experience or understanding of how things work under the hood, which usually comes with experience anyways...

  • It's 2 minutes and 55 seconds.

Not 2 minutes and 50 seconds.

    God, get it right.

  • Programming isn't that easy, I have spent hours in front of a screen. it is a very antisocial process. For now i use dark gdk, check my channel for some games and tutorials.

  • and that wasnt half life! unless u used models that were centered

  • umm, this is level design?

  • yes it is

  • I was thinking about doing game design my self but I got sucked into the business aps world and thats what I do now. It seems almost every kid these days want to be a video game programmer. But I see them go to school for it and drop out in the first semester.

  • Programing is hard

  • do you know any video game design programs? I dont just want to design levels of a video game that has already been created, I want a full on video game design! Please help.

  • start with dark basic and work your way up to dark basic pro!!!!

  • Nah its best to use Autodesk 3ds Max, or Autodesk Maya.

  • btw heythereman123, its not just about slapping up a program and designing a level, its not like map editor on far cry. It takes hundreds of hours to get used to designing, then hundreds more to actually design what you want. You need a programmer aswell if your wanting to play these levels and shit.

  • beautiful coding!!!!! but i would be nice to see it native to some better graphics. o wells

  • What looks dated (old) today, looked state-of-the-art back then. Quake looks primitive to us now, but when it came out it was the best game engine anyone had ever conceived - it revolutionized not only games, but computer graphics as a whole. It created a whole new paradigm in computer graphics technology (software and hardware) and game design. I include these earlier works in this video because they chronicle my work - from 1996 to 2006. I work professionally now for Fallen Earth.

  • worth it!

  • you must of done alot of work there it must make you tired lol

  • quake is older then 10 years

  • let me guess, you don't have any old games. You don't have to get to work right away on level design, that was probably his first attempt with an engine. I use blender and my GOD, python script is killing me. Yes Quake is old, but he probably started later. Anyway, rainyn keep up the good work man!

  • I've spent many hundreds of hours over the course of >10 years in creating what you see in this video and much more. Yet I did it because I wanted to do this more than anything else. So while it did make me tired, I didn't mind too much :-).

  • Well I've just started making my own levels, although it's fun I wish I could be more organic. I have a love for lighting though. Do you use any 3D modeling programs such as 3DS Max or Blender?

  • I do now, but not for much of anything in this video. I began using 3DS Max right about the time this video was being made - it's very useful for complex models that can't be created using traditional level design tools. 3DS Max is the industry standard these days - any artist that wants a job in games needs to be good at it.

  • I agree, I try to have fluency in several modeling programs. Right now I'm working on my own game called, Sana†orium. I have a demo animation that I created a while back. Give me some tips on what I could do. I've only been meesing around with 3DS Max for about a year. Just need tips from an artist's point of view. Thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • umm, learn c++ some modeling, some texturing etc and you will be able to learn. only if your dedicated though otherwise don't waste you time if you decide you don't like it later.

  • and if you had any ideas that you REALLY want to see, then fuck it. you will NEVER see them

  • eh? if you know how then youll be able to do it. your statement makes no sense, if you tried and gave up thats your own experience, there are pleanty of people who actually get there.

  • That made absolutely no sense. It's like you typed just to see your own words.

  • Oh...i forget...thanks for the tip...i think-.-

Not sure...it´s not so that...i didnt can think this alone...But...shit of it...

    Thanks you for that...really...

  • Are you a level designer? Like work for it?

  • I do level design now professionally for Icarus Studios on Fallen Earth. It's been a couple years now since I've done anything outside work. I did some more work after this video (some of it can be seen on my website), but soon after I made this video I became employed full-time doing level design and spend my free time performing with a band, playing video games, and practicing my modeling skills. Level design fulfills my need to create and is pretty cool most of the time.

  • very inspiring

  • I had a game design program, but it doesn't work anymore :(. And I don't have money for a new program. Has anyone some tips for me? How can I get a new program for not so much money?

  • if you have steam with half life 2 or team fortress 2 you can get a program called source sdk (hammer) in staem tools.

  • Yes - Click on the "Tools" tab in Steam and download and install the Source SDK (software development kit). As long as you have purchased one of their main games (Half Life 2, or the Orange Box) you should be able to begin making levels right now for free. The beginning learning curve is pretty steep though - stick with it and the results can be very rewarding. Go start now: developer . valvesoftware . com/wiki/Main_Page

  • Pc gaming for life.

  • All of your questions are answered in the "more info" column. Please read it.

  • that was not half life.

  • Thats not Half-Life!?

  • is this your game

  • BTW I go to waketech. It's in Raleigh NC. I'm not sure if you heard of it. But perhaps you have, considering that you said you went to NC state right? Waketech is quite fond of nc state. They have a program that gaurantees admission into NC state and also allows access to libraries and labs while stillworking towards admission. My name is andrew btw, I'm looking very forward to game developement with consoles such as xbox360 and ps3. I own them both. But I also enjoy working which is quite diff.

  • Join the IGDA here in Raleigh. Get an internship before you graduate - I interned at Ritual Entertainment in Dallas, TX for 3 months in 2005, which was awesome - 8-10 hrs/day 6 days/week on the Source Engine doing level design.

  • Hmm.. i was expecting games with better graphics since these are last generation looking. how complex is it to make somthing as detailed textured as MGS4 (metal gear solid 4) or if you don't know what that is what about halo3 or bioshock?

  • You would need to be very good at whatever discipline you choose to produce content like what's in those games.

  • Yeah I'm changing my major. instead of getting a 2 year transfer degree i'm going to get a 2 year gamedevelopement degree. My grades are not so great as of right now and that is why i want to switch it. I also live close to red storm game developement and i can work with them hopefully. I livein NC.

  • Red Storm and Epic Games only choose the very best of all applicants. In addition, you can assume neither studio really needs additional talent unless they are ramping up for a new project. Many studios in the games industry NEED and WANT veteran developers. They will take newbies if those people are exceptionally good. So, whatever discipline you choose (e.g., art, programming) you gotta be excellent at it and get excellent grades in school.

  • I am very Interested in the development of games and have used many tools and engines too. I also am learning many programing languages but yet Im a kid but anyway I have already writen up ideas for my first game and I am looking for a game engine to make it on. Do you know any Game engines that are free and don't require too much knowledge of game designing?

  • Most game engines that allow the user to edit content are completely free (after you purchase the game, of course - hopeful game developers never download warez games!). You can make whatever your skills and imagination allow. The catch is that you cannot SELL your creations or make any kind of profit from them. If you want to do that, you need to purchase a license from the developer. Last I heard, Unreal 3 Engine cost $1,000,000 on average to license. Try Crysis, HL2, or U3.

  • i need ot get into this kinda of stuff...any aspect of video games...i cant see myself in nay other career lol... but my grades right now might not be good enough to even go for a degree in post secondary

  • How much do you want it? That will determine the effort you put into getting better grades and enrolling in college...

    :-/

  • Thank you so much for the 'info' section! Very very good advice for people wanting to break into the industry!!!

    Thanks again! :D

  • Glad to see that someone reads that! You'll make it in for sure - just be diligent and persistent in your efforts.

  • I already joined idga + have my first meeting Oct 14th with the Boston chapter! I'm trying to figure out if going to ITT Tech for their gaming degree will be better than a 'miscellaneous' degree. I would do writing, but I want to be involved with the making of the game, possibly scripting them too. It's all so exciting for me- I want to do it all! LOL Thanks so much for your help- it's very much appreciated! And when I get into a position where I can give advice, I'll be doing the same thing! :D

  • People in the games industry are much more impressed with a bona fide (real) college degree than a certificate from a tech or art school. You should take the time to get a bachelors degree in just about anything - but the closer you get in your degree to your interests the better. I went to North Carolina State University and received a degree in Technology Education. That combined with many years of level design helped me get in less than a year after graduation.

  • I am working on registering at the college I first started taking classes at, to finish up + get an associates- unfortunately it's only a two year college. It's amazing how much the private colleges want to charge you for any kind of gaming courses- one was $1,041 per credit hour!!

I am also getting myself some books on game design and the biz, working on owning 3ds max so i can dabble around,+ basically scour the internet for all the info I can get. Thanks again! :D

  • brilliant, I love the stuff you did with the source engine, quite nice. Ever thought of mapping for something like warsow or nexuiz? They both essentially use a q3 engine, so you could map with (gtk/q)radiant, which you're probably quite familiar with.

  • you have been doing level design for 10years and thats the best you can do. come on man!

all your rooms are just basically boxes they have no purpose. creating games these days is heavly based on architecture and real building layouts. rooms have to have purpose or else its just a box with things inside. if you want to one day work in the games industry your gonna have to start thinking of levels as a real place, toward photo realistic texture sizes

  • dumb ass...... this was the year 2006 not 2008 aloy has changed stfu....

  • Yeah it was 2006 and besides lets see you do better.
