It's nice to see more people writing about James Powers. He had a dojo in Queens, NY on Atlantic Ave. He use shake my hand every time I won in the AAU tournaments. He got me a summer job teaching judo in a camp. It was fun, now I teach my own system part time in NJ called Clear Combat. It is MMA street fighting with a strong leaning towards judo, greco/roman and free style wrestling with submissions.
I trained with Professor for 5 years .I got my black belt from him right be for he retired in 1995. He was a real gentelman and a great teacher.OOUS Rest In PEACE shehan..was also with sensi Rivera when he took the school another great man and teacher Hope you are well NICK
Wow. I trained with Professor Powers and Master Rivera in the 8o's Professor Vee would train with us time to time. I remember everyone in this clip but can only remember Pedro's name, he use to give me rides to all the tournaments we went to! I also remember training with Professor's daughter Pam and grand son Chucky!! Anyone that use to train at the dojo please feel free to send me an email, love to hear from you and see how your doing. Master Rivera, where are you?orlandore1@aol.com sensi Rick
i was very grieved hearing the passing away of professor james powers. i literally grew up at his dojo on Atlantic Ave (as seen in the video) during the early 80's -. I remember Professor charging $40 a month unlimited open gym. He was always "growling" like a tiger whenever he gripped you or demonstrated a punch, and taught us that your "KIA" should be loud enough to drop a bird out of the sky.He had an anvil right next to his desk that he was constantly punching while smiling showing his teeth
@vvvvnewcreation I trained there durning the same period, I still go back to the location everytime I visit NY. My name is Sensi Rick Cazeau. I'm trying to find Master Rivera, have you kept in touch with him?
@vvvvnewcreation I got my black belt from professor in 1995 just before he retired by then he was charging $50 a month. I know all you say is true. His kind is missed . Nick
This video brings back so many memories. I trained there for about 4 years then decided to enter sparring tournaments for 5 years where I applied what I was taught.
I am currently starting a MMA street fighting system called Clear Combat, it's a business inside another fitness center in NJ. I am applying the judo to my system.
I trained with James Powers in Queens for about 4 years until i got my Black Belt. He was more of a judo player in my mind and very strong with his hands. The style was Vee Arnis Jitsu, mostly Philippine. The only thing that I felt was lacking was the hand strikes. It needed to focus on boxing more. Powers was more of a boxer himself.
I trained with Prof. Powers from 1979 through 1994 and achieved 3rd degree black belt. He was a tremendous human being and a father figure. He was tough as nails but he had a very soft heart and was there to help those in need. I remember Prof. Powers as a generous, sharing human being. The martial arts was his vehicle to give back and help others grow and be strong in life. It worked for me and for this I am infinitely grateful.
@mannydelvalle really my dad used to train with him when he was a teenager my dad made me find him on the computer and i finally found him on my last guess youtube
Why do you have a Philippine flag? Is the founder of this school a Filipino? then a japanese and American Flag. Any body been hit by that forearm strike goes straight to hospital

Vee Arnis Jitsu was created by Grandmaster Florendio Visitacion, a Filipino. Professor Powers was also a karate master.
