Maybe you got lucky, maybe the piccilo petes have a desensitized formula, I don't know. I used to buy from skylighter too. No problems making my own, only dismantling the store bought stuff. I was using pliers to smash pieces of whisle mix in a cup. It ignited spontaneously and shot the flames at my face. Luckily i threw the cup in time. I quit trying to dismantle hard powder fireworks after that. If you want to make a bang just buy black powder.

Pretty stupid to smash whistle mix with a hammer. It is extremely shock sensitive. Just go to your local sporting goods store and buy some gunpowder.

It's very safe to handle or crush up.

You're wrong about that.. All whistle fireworks are pressed into their tubes wet with a slow hydraulic press instead of the usual hand ramming. Look it up and every respected source will tell you not to hammer on this stuff, people die that way.

You're right about the way whistle devices are made but you're wrong about the sensitivity.

I've made whistle mix using the directions from skylighterDOTcom and I found that the whistle mix is slow burning and very safe to handle however, it's sensitive to static.

I've taken Piccolo Petes and have crushed them up with a hammer when I wanted to extract the powder.

it's a piccolo pete wrapped in masking tape and then pounded with a hammer. the masking tape is there so that the ingredients and powders can mix but they wont all spill out. so once the piccolo pete has been pounded enough you stick it inside a lemon, light the fuse and DISISINTEGRATION.
