It's quite hard, finding the balance between grace, elegance, and passion, all of which this complex piece is meant to convey... Those who prefer more abandon will criticize it as "cold", but many of us feel that restraint is also a form of emotional expression. I think Lugansky did a terrific job with his interpretation.
i feel like ballade 4 is extremely overwritten. i have heard it many times in recitals by both consevatory students and professionals, and up until the piano rubato section on pg 7 it doesnt even start to pick up, and with the exception of the sempre piu f section on pg 3, most of the ballade is boring
A superb interpretation which has poetry and passion in abundance, not to mention flawless mastery. In fact one of finest performances I've heard of this masterpiece.
At 8:33 Chopin opens a door for us. The ensuing sounds give the listener a brief glimpse of heaven. Through all the notes that the great masters wrote, this passage is my very favorite. Thank you Fryderyk and Nikolai...
I like how he plays the second theme, a lot of people don't pay attention to the phrasing there since it's so simple and beautiful it's easy to forget! He shapes it beautifully.
I beleive that 200 years of piano tradition decided to offer us this pianist as a gift .I can see old, vanished masters listening to him smiling. (my doc said it is not that serious, lol).
such a pleasent and charming comment. this is our new generation of horowitz! did you see his program? All rachmaninoff sonatas, all chopin etudes, all rachmaninoff concertos, all beethovens sonatas and listzts trascendtal etudes. and i bet theres much more. and hes only 34 years old. imagine what hell learn in another 34 years. all that i dont like aobut him is that the piano is too bright in this video, i prefer a horowitz type mellow and nasal piano. love the joke about the doc btw

This interpretation actually sounds eerily similar to Stanislav Bunin's interpretation at the International Chopin Piano Competition in 1985.

You can't possibly let the note at 3:18 ring for a more perfect amount of time.
